Olo Yogurt Studio

I’m kind of surprised about all the positive reviews about this place. I went in here last night with a few friends and we all sampled just about every flavor before deciding to leave (something none of us normally do). Every flavor, including the plain chocolate, had a very artificial taste about it. Kind of reminded me of scratch and sniff stickers or flavored Chapstick. It’s just plain bad.

Fellow Unilocalers — you let me down on this one. I was sorely disappointed in Olo. The flavors were limited (6 of the options were variations of chocolate, vanilla, and cake batter). Toppings were nothing to write home about. I still remain confused as to why this town struggles with ice cream/​fro yo options. The search for good froyo continues…

Being from a small town where self-​serve frozen yogurt was unheard of, Olo set the bar high. Very high. As a freshman living in the dorms at UNM, Olo was a very short walk away, maybe 3 blocks. Their flavors are constantly changing, with the most popular being offered all the time (why hasn’t red velvet been added to the permanent menu?) They even have a blue Breaking Bad inspired yogurt, and thin mint flavored around Girl Scout cookie time!
They do a week of celebratory events every year around their birthday. They claim to give a random person free Olo for a year if they make a purchase during a certain day during their birthday week. It’s true! My roommate actually won free Olo for a year!
I appreciate that Olo has FRESH fruits and not that canned, yucky stuff!
My favorite flavor is cake batter, which is luckily part of their permanent menu. They have great prices and a wide selection of toppings. Try the pop rocks, it’s an experience!
The restrooms are super clean as is the actual establishment. The temperature is always perfect inside, not too hot and not too cold!

Great Frozen yogurt aka fro-​yo! If I am not mistaken it was named best in the city and if I am well if should be best in the city!

Definitely hit or miss. If you stick with the tried-​and-​true flavors (Capulin cake batter!) then you’re guaranteed to have a good time. When you veer from the road most traveled, things can get a little funky.

This was where I escaped after many college exams during my time at UNM. They have a lot of tasty flavors and an even larger selection of toppings (mango boba, pieces of fruit, candy bars, caramel turtles, fruity pebbles, sprinkles, hot fudge, and the list goes on and on)! This is definitely my favorite spot for froyo, nothing else in town really compares to this.
AND! You can get tiny samples of froyo for free before you fill your gigantic cup up with tastiness!

Olo has a rotating selection of yogurt flavors. You fill up the cup with the yogurt and get your toppings. They have a good selection of toppings from fresh fruit, cereal, chocolate, candies, Mochi, boba, cookies… etc. You can get wild and end up paying big bucks like me when you go a tad overboard, fill up to the brim or overfill. Anything to stay cool in this hot weather!

The yogurt tasted like ice milk. If you’ve never experienced ice milk (you don’t want to) take my word that that is not a good thing. Its sort of… how to say this descriptively…? Its the opposite of creamy. Instead its watery, with big ice crystals in it, and it tastes cheap. I sampled several flavors and they all had the same consistency. The toppings were fine. I liked the homemade cranberry sauce, but the yogurt was so unpleasant I didn’t want to finish it. Also the store was crowded and parking was hard to find. I’m not a resident of ABQ, so maybe this is the best it gets here. If so, sorry guys. Try to get an Orange Leaf in your town. You’ll love it.

I like frozen yogurts and I like it here too. I dig the variety of toppings, and the flavors I chose were good ones. FYI, I did not opt for the monster jumbo container and I went more sweet than tart. Thank heaven for the small sample cups. It let me know that a few of those flavors were NOT for me! I liked my chocoholic, fruit loop flavor & fruity sorbet (name escapes me). Props for the divider which helps keep my stuff from mixing up into odd flavors.
Overall, it’s like any other fro-​yo shop to me. Living in Cali spoiled me and, like yoga, ATM’s or sushi, we expect them everywhere. They seem to blend into each other. I like the clean, bright feel of these places and I like the option of choosing to sit in/​outdoors. This one checks those boxes. I give this one extra props for being local, in Nob Hill and half props for a good product/​experience. The girl behind the counter was friendly and efficient even as her shift was ending.
So, why three stars? That’s because my g.f. broke a tooth on a hard gummy bear. Simple… and that should be enough said. Except we were stopping for Chocolate Dude — b/​c we love it. I, yes I (not her) strayed from that idea, to lead us in for this yogurt. She agreed and I felt bad for making that move. So, what’s done is done, but I cannot reward the hard bear.
I’ll likely be back to this or the other location since mine tasted fine, but I will be leery of my toppings because I will have to remember seeing the jagged points of her tooth on a napkin & all that goes with that.

Wow! As frozen yogurt place. The joint is way better than munchies. The variety of flavors n fruits are great and fresh.

Lots of toppings. Many great flavors, and they do a great job of swapping out ones to keep the lineup fresh.
A nice discount if you have a student ID. Use it to get 20% off a gift card, to give you more incentive to come back.

this was my first experience here wow I loved I tried the peanut butter pistachio and cake batter flavor loved all three of them the sales clerk was a lot of fun upbeat and very knowledgeable about the area really enjoyed spending some time and hang out with him. I will definitely come back !

Olo had the most flavors to choose from, at least compared to other froyo that I have been too in ABQ. Deciding on a flavor was quiet the task, but they also provide dividers if you want to select multiple flavors AND don’t want them to mix (what a cool thought). They also had so many topping options to choose from, which was a lot of fun.
Although parking is always an issue in Nob Hill, it is a great place to stop by after dinner.

For a frozen yogurt joint, this place hits the mark. The flavors are always a combo of traditional and interesting (french toast, and other weird ones). And while serve yourself yogurt can be expensive, the total bill for my kids and me never seems to come above $ 10. And its locally owned and the family always donates to local causes. Worth the trek — worth keeping in business.

Our second go to yogurt place after the Westside Olo. Always great flavors on tap and fun to sit at the outside tables and people watch.

I love me some frozen yogurt, and let’s be real; my partner Leo likes it even more than I do. Ergo, when we had some down time before my class at Self Serve, we eyed this place and stopped by.
Is it THE BEST YOGURT PLACE IN THE WORLD? No. However, it was still pretty tasty. Well organized, everything was clean, and while they only had 10 flavors, they were pretty good flavors at that. They had a fair amount of toppings, including some really fun ones that I haven’t seen elsewhere. If only I was local so that I could try them all.
I like that this place seems more locally oriented and not part of a chain, and I would definitely stop by again if I found myself near one.

Most froyo places are highly similar to one another, but some of them — such as Olo — stand out for subtle reasons.
Olo has about 10 flavors, lots of fresh toppings (mochi!), reasonable prices, and high cleanliness standards. The sample cups are easily accessible, and they also usually have at least one no-​sugar-​added option.
A negative is that Olo almost never has a full fat option, and I’m no fan of non– or low-​fat froyo.

I love this place so much, yet I have to work hard to stay away. Otherwise I’d weigh a hundred thousand pounds and probably have diabetes.
Even though they serve frozen yogurt verses traditional ice cream, making it «healthier,» one can add as much toppings as one wants, and that’s what I tend to do. Add everything, the diabetes included.
Though they do have a wide variety of frozen yogurt flavors, each with varying levels of sugar and fat. Their Zia Blueberry Lite has the least amount of sugar with five grams. They have the typical non-​fat and low-​fat choices. Every bit counts when you’re a glutton.
Talking to one of the staff recently, she said there are people who come into their place who are on «the yogurt diet.» I hadn’t heard of it, but they replace a regular meal with a healthy frozen yogurt, which probably could be a heap of Olo’s non-​fat Chacoholic frozen yogurt topped with a ton of fresh fruit. I’m guessing these yogurt diet people aren’t adding any of the sugary syrups or decadent toppings, well that is if they’re serious about being healthier and/​or losing weight.
Olo tries to get all of their ingredients from as close to local as possible. For instance, all of their fresh fruit comes from local stores. Most of the frozen yogurt is made nearby. The furthest away, I believe, is from Colorado.
The owner wanted to expound on their affinity for locally-​made products in their frozen yogurt shop:
«We don’t make our yogurt in house mainly because yogurt requires a fermentation process and though I love the idea of yogurt ‘microbrewery,’ we just don’t have the capacity to do so. In fact, we source our yogurt from both Colorado and Oregon. I would love to offer a New Mexican made product, however, to my knowledge, one does not exist. (I have contacted local dairies in the past, but none had plans to make frozen yogurt).»
Olo has a wonderful selection of frozen yogurt flavors and toppings. I especially love their Chacoholic non-​fat frozen yogurt, being a typical chocoholic. This place place is locally-​owned and run, and they do very well even with the non-​local competition around the corner.

Isn’t an ice cream/​frozen yogurt business a no-​brainer in ABQ?
One would imagine, but the recent demise of a Nob Hill gelato shop has me second-​guessing. Aside from Cold Stone, I can’t think of many stand-​alone creameries that have survived the test of time in this city. Even the Dairy Queen down Central by the bus depot has departed. There are success stories, but the formula seems to demand that a business provide something alongside the sweets, like sandwiches or shopping items, to thrive. I’m praying to my caramel chocolate gods that Olo bucks the trend, ’cause this place is money.
This is how a typical visit to one of these shops goes for me: I walk up to the thick-​paned plastic windows, peer into the vats of available flavors, pick out maybe five or six that I would love to try, then choose one and hope it’s a winner. And usually it isn’t, I have reservations, I’m sad I didn’t choose something else. Nearly every time that’s how the whole experience goes down.
Not at Olo. The very best aspect of the entire setup, in my opinion, is the fact that you can sample every flavor of frozen yogurt available on your own time by your own hand, rather than asking an employee to fetch. I sampled — you guessed it — five of them, before coming across the One… My Precious… Schmiegel loved up on the chocolate. Chocolate frozen yogurt? Yep, it was quite good. I then proceeded to do something akin to asking for curry «Thai Hot». I smothered the bastard with caramel, peanut butter, and brownie nuggets — ruffly seven, eight toppings — thus completely submerging the authenticity of the yogurt itself. But oh well, it was fabulous.
Another wonderful aspect of the setup was my ability to measure my portion, as opposed to some zit-​faced kid rolling a massive scoop onto a cone or a cup. I wasn’t up for that kind of gorge-​gasm, I was feeling rather modest, and the cost ended up reflecting that approach. Really fair price, wonderful sweets/​fresh fruit selection, vibrant interior, friendly employees: I’m there, and so is my 14 year-​old.
One aside: the cashier was occasionally peering through Stephen Colbert’s latest book during her downtime, and I was really happy to observe this. I worked the service industry for at least a decade in many capacities, from soda jerk to high end table service, and one thing I couldn’t handle were micro-​managing shift supervisors who waited for a moment of peace and tranquility to arrive so they could jump on my back about some asinine project or side work, just because there wasn’t anything else to do. Sometimes it’s actually good to relax a little at work, too. Promoting a work environment where employees can find the time to joke around a little, or read, or whatever, also promotes trust and goodwill. Nice job, Olo.
