Statement of Purpose

An integral project of the Opstand Foundation, the Malibu House of Hope was begun to assist and inspire at-risk and homeless youth to become self-supporting and contributing members of our communities.

We achieve our mission through:

1) Transitional housing that provides a positive environment, and relief from hunger and the dangers of street-life;

2) Individual evaluation of needs and goals;

3) A «Learning to be Self-Reliant» program of work, exercise, reading, and spirituality;

4) Job skills training, and internship and employment opportunities; and

5) Assistance with individual education goals, including completing the GED, and application to college, technical school, and/or certificate programs.

History

Established in 2009.

We help homeless teens are often runaways who were abused or were forced out of their homes by parents who couldn’t handle them anymore. These «throwaway teens» take to the streets feeling unwanted and uncared for. They quit school and move to the busy sidewalks and parks of larger cities, where most eventually abuse drugs or alcohol, become even more detached, and acquire an overwhelming sense of resentment towards society. Going home means returning to an abusive or otherwise intolerable situation — not considered an option by most runaways. On their wish lists are things like a place to sleep, regular meals, showers, job training, and medical care. With the help of caring mentors, young people in need can experience compassion and concern for others as they find safe shelter, trusting relationships, improved self esteem, and more meaningful lives.
