We had the lamb shank pie and fish and chips. Had to wait over 30 minutes due to our server just taking off but the food was worth the wait. My pie was hot, creamy and hearty. Loved the side of veggies. Partners fish was well battered and seasoned well. Had a lovely meal. Pale ale was tasty. Nice spot.

The Windmill is an unsuspecting pub in Mayfair. Full on the outside and the inside with office types so reservations are necessary. Their website proudly presents they specialise in pies and even their rooms are named the upper and lower pie rooms! So what else would I go for on a wet London evening but steak and kidney pie? The pie itself had a crispy top, searing hot inner filled to the top with tender beef, not too many kidneys though. Thick gravy binding everything together pretty much perfectly. If I was fussy, I would say more kidney please! Mash was good, slightly larger portion would have been useful. Creamy spring greens were delicious and the perfect accompaniment. Service was efficient, friendly and willing to help. Overall, a great pie in an unexpected location. I would return for any future pie requirements.

Great ambiance, music just loud enough to make conversations private but no so loud that they’re difficult. Nice beer selection and the steak and kidney pie is delicious, the crust was perfect. Service is prompt and the atmosphere is casual and relaxed. Plenty of space, although it was a Monday night. I would recommend if you’re in the area, but look local before making a special trip.

Authentic pub atmosphere. I found this place because my husband insisted on a meat pie during our London trip. Brian ordered the short rib and horseradish pie. Which was so so. I ordered fish and chips that were also okay. We went and ate in the pie room but I wish we had stayed downstairs where it was a bit more lively.

My brother and I were trying to find some food to eat and stumbled upon this place when looking for pies. What a great place! We came in around 6PM and was about to give up on the place since there weren’t any seats available when we saw an opening. I’m glad we decided to take it, since the pies were really quite up to the hype. I got a game pie and my brother got a steak and mushroom. Both were very delicious. The crusts were crispy and the filling was perfectly seasoned. The side of mash was excellent as well and is the perfect(and classic) accompaniment to the pie. In addition to this, we got some beers, which just made this quite an awesome meal. The atmosphere of the place was very pub like. As a pub, that makes sense, but it didn’t really hit me until I got there. There were a bunch of people chatting away and drinking beers and stuff. Even the private rooms were booked and full of people. There were just so many people all around, which was why I was surprised a seat even opened up when it did. Let that be a note of warning if you plan to come here around dinner time. For the food though, definitely recommend to anyone visiting. I found the pie to be absolutely amazing.

I ordered the seasonal special Game Pie, and the staff suggested I have a side of gravy, which was spot on. Very good food, friendly service, which made for a nice Christmas Eve dinner.

Found this place on Unilocal while shopping when we were starving. This place was so cute and the food was great! We ordered a shepard’s pie and steak and mushroom pie and they were both delicious. I liked the shepard’s pie a little bit more though. They have a good selection of seasonal beer but if you don’t know the beers, you’ll be blindly picking — although if you ask, they will let you try a little before you choose. Overall, this was a great first meal in London and if I ever go back, will return!

Sadly I can’t review this place because despite making a reservation they did not have a table. When I asked for the purpose of a reservation I was told that«we do not have a table». I walked around the corner to Goodman and would highly recommend it! To those who like herring — they have the best!

4.5 stars, maybe 5. Best pies I ever had. The kidney pie might have not enough kidney and too much mushrooms but the seasonal venison pie was extraordinary. Perfectly seasoned and tasty, just the exact same way I’d cook it. The pie crust was so fresh and crispy, cooked to perfection. The side of spinash was perfect: under-cooked, minced spinash with butter. Lovely staff, nice brown ales. Perfect British traditional place. a MUSTTRY if you want to have the best meat pie while you’re staying in London!

Nice little pub round the corner from Sketch, serves Gin & Tonic and sells pies. Next time I’ll try a pie!

What a great little place to end our evening! We came here for their meat pies! Hubby enjoyed tasting the beer and his beef and kidney pie. I had the chicken bacon pie with chips and a lemonade pimp. We shared a bowl of pea mash. For desert we had the custard with apple crumble, I normally don’t like custard but let me say I dipped my Apple crumble into the ramekin and clean it dry! We ate upstair in the open patio had to great servers that checked in to make we had everything we need, and they both were friendly and chatted with us.

On my recent visit to London, I was naturally craving a traditional meat pie. My friend and I did a quick search and found The Windmill. I was impressed with the selection of pies and the food was absolutely delicious. We were able to sit outside on the rooftop patio, and enjoy some drinks in the sun.

Had dinner here with my family. The food was all pretty solid. Decent value. Somewhat uninspiring selection of beers, though. The service was average. A good spot to have a classic pub meal.

Best meat pie I have ever had! We spent our London trip eating meat pies all over the city and the ones at Windmill were definitely the best. This is an unassuming pub right behind the main shopping street of Piccadilly Circus so it is an ideal place to stop by after a long day of shopping. The place is filled with locals and I felt like the only tourist there. I hope this Unilocal review doesn’t ruin that. There is plenty of seating but we sat in the main room. The terrace and meat pie rooms also looked great. We ordered the steak and ale pie and the steak and kidney pie. Both were amazing. Don’t ruin them with gravy, the gravy inside was incredible and even better spread on the mash that comes on the side. The tap selection was typical for London pubs and the prices quite reasonable. I will definitely be recommending this place to all my friends when they visit London and I can’t wait to go back!

My friend and I visited this place in the end of February after some shopping in London. When we came in around 5:30pm on a Thursday night, we went to the top floor and was asked if we had a reservation and answered no. There was no one else there and we were sat down. I don’t know if it was just me but the waitress was not so friendly and she stared at my friend and I intensely the whole night while standing at the bar right across from our table, which made for an uncomfortable experience. I had the fish pie and rosé wine and shared a meringue dessert with my friend. They were relatively tasty, but I wish I had tried their award winning steak pie instead. It also took a while for our food to come out, but maybe that’s normal when you order pies.

Stopped by for lunch during the middle of the week. Ordered a Shepard pie and stout. The Shepard pie was delicious. Full of flavor and the right textures. I can still picture it when I close my eyes. The stout was a perfect match. If I wasn’t so full and satisfied from the pie I would’ve finished it all. Definitely plan to return one day.

Got the Shepard pie which had a ton of lamb flavor, I don’t normally eat lamb so it was too much lamb for me. My boyfriend got the fish pie which wasn’t bad but wasn’t amazing. The food was ok

Very good meat pies! We were so underdressed compared to all the businessmen but it didn’t matter because we were in meat pie heaven.

I had a hard time deciding what kind of food was London-specific that I NEEDED to try before leaving since I only had 2 days in the city. Then it dawned on me. Shepherd’s pie! I proceeded to check where I could find some and then I found this restaurant claiming to have the best. We came in around noon and the place was dead, which was not reassuring since it’s prime-time lunch. We stayed anyway and our server was super friendly Shepherd’s Pie — Learned that this is served with mashed potatoes and not a crust. The filling was good but I got tired of eating it after a while. Steak & Kidney Pie — Crust stole the show. It was awesome. I definitely enjoyed this more than the Shepherd’s Pie. I did not get tired of it and finished this down to the very last crumb. They won an award for their steak & kidney pie so not that surprised that it was much better than the regular shepherd’s pie. Cozy spot and good food. Next time I am craving pie in london, this is probably where I will go.

Mmmmmm… pie. Pie pie pie pie pie pie pie. PIE! Now that I’ve thoroughly dated myself with that reference, I’ll say that the Windmill lives up to its claim as being the best place in the area for pies. We had some drinks at the bar/outside and later came in and found a seat in «Pie Room Too» and ordered. Around the table there were choices of chicken/leek, steak/mushroom, haloumi, & one other. Everyone loved the pies. I had the steak & mushroom and it was delish! I’d have rather gotten chips than mashed potatoes, but forgot to order that way. No problem, though. The pie pastry was very nice and the seasoning just scrumptious. I’ll definitely keep The Windmill in mind for a nice pub meal when I’m out shopping, etc.
