Fantastic Italian restaurant in a nice central Camberwell location. The food is always superb and at excellent prices(even family from outside London thought it was very well priced). The staff are lovely but don’t constantly hover. They seem to magically appear when you need them. Make sure you order something quintessentially Italian — I once ordered the mixed grill and it was nowhere near as good. If you only try one restaurant on Camberwell, make sure it’s this one!

I had a fantastic meal in this restaurant. Great Italian food nice atmosphere and very friendly staff. The Sea Bass stuffed with calamari special was absolutely amazing from beginning to end, the way its served with the waiter opening up the foil pocket it was cooked in, then removing the bones placing the whole fish on your plate spooning back on the calamari and pouring over all the juice from the foil its great to watch and you cant wait to get stuck in, when you do WOW you wont be disappointed full of flavour every single mouthful was yum.

Almost walked past this little gem in a sad street of takeaway and kebab places. Stepping inside was like being transported to Tuscany. Friendly staff and the food was so delicious. It made our trip!!!

I like this place. Good home cooking! It is not posh, it is not fancy, it is not pretentious, it is just good food, at a welcoming place, offered at a good price.

I LOVE this restaurant! The staff are lovely, the prices are low and the food is exactly what I like; homely, tasty and plentiful. Every time I leave I feel pleasantly happy like I’ve been to a meal with my family — the atmosphere is very welcoming. It’s the sort of place I would happily take any family or friends who visit me for a meal.

Been here 2 or 3 times, mainly at lunch as they do a lunchtime special of a main and a drink for £6.50 Had the pasta and the pizza’s, which are especially good considering the price. Huge and with a nice base. Pleasant enough atmosphere with friendly staff. Almost like Fawlty Towers in tone [a bit 70’s] but very courteous and attentive staff.

I have been here twice for lunch and i must say its a very nice place to eat Small and friendly restaurant. On the first visit i had a vegetarian lasagna«Not by choice» my cousin insisted i should try it and it was not bad considering i am not vegetarian and I’m not a fan of Veg… On my 2nd visit i had a pasta dish it was amazing. The prices are decent and portions are quiet filling… on both occasions i just about finished i was absolutely stuffed. Lol

Well, Caravaggio’s used to be a place where you could get an immaculate sandwich, like only an Italian could make. They could turn a straightforward smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel into a thing of mouth-watering beauty with a few delicate and precise touches. Or you could go for something more gluttonous, like steak, peppers, onions and melted cheese.(Oh yeah!!) Then they decided they’d had enough of that, and wanted to be a «proper» restaurant, so it was bye-bye to the sandwiches. Now it’s all reasonable pasta and pizza dishes, priced reasonably. That’s their prerogative, of course, but I miss those sandwiches! My mate Tom always seems to want to come here when we hook up for lunch, and they always seem pretty busy with groups of people who work locally on lunch excursions, so I guess they’re doing something right.

I went with a friend and her housemate who practically live here. This was evident by the father-like attentions of the waiters(consummate pros all, our prosecco was constantly topped up without feeling pressured to drink a ton) and the fact that the food is really good. I liked the wallpaper and the room was really nice — good wood tables and romantic without being cheesey. I had king prawns in a garlic tomato sauce to start — bit too much sauce, but very good prawns. My friend is hooked on their chicken liver pâté and very kindly let me tear some away from her plate. It was really, really excellent. I’m a pâté addict and this was as good as any I’ve had, served with a nice heap of rocket and good bread. I went simple for the next course with meatballs and tomato sauce spaghetti, which sounds infinitely better in Italian. Large portion and perfect. Light, tasty sauce, the perfect sugo. We asked for our bill, after which a waiter came and offered us drinks which annoyed me a bit as I thought they’d forgotten our bill. Turns out I was being a plum idiot. Being regulars, my friends(and by extension, me) were being offered a digestif on the house. Cue Amarettos all round, a quick fag outside in the nice little paved garden where we swapped shoe shop recommendations with some friendly girls and then it was back to the glamour of the bus stop.

Love love love it. It’s a fabulously chintzy local restaurant, with fantastic service if you rate 6 waiters to a table(this might just be for girls!) who exclaim talk to me! to take your order. The food is wonderful for the price. Not innovative, but good simple and hearty Italian, if sometimes over salted. With soft, flavoursome mussels the size of a baby’s fist for £4.50, there is not much to fault on the menu, really. The lasagne is great always my first choice as it’s usually cheaper to eat here than at home! A note: if you ask for ‘a little’ parmesan, you will get at the very least a heavily steeped tablespoon. There’s little you can do about this, i’ve tried.

I feel slightly as my parents may have felt in the 70’s and 80’s. Chirpy waiters chat freely over cheesy pop to their regular customers in a large wood and garish wallpaper lined back room. It’s comfortable, if not particularly stylish. The menu is as they’d have expected, lined with straight forward pasta, fish and meat standards. There’s no innovation here, but you wouldn’t expect it at the price. After the obligatory sliced pre bought baguette(basket, paper napkin) and mixed olives I started with a fair enough(and large) portion of King Prawns in a piquant tomato sauce and followed with a bubbling homemade lasagne straight from the oven. I wouldn’t say it was the best I’ve ever had, tasty enough, but over salted and low on meat. That being said, it was a massive portion for £7 and I certainly didn’t feel shortchanged at the end of it. Another bottle of wine and a complimentary limoncello(just like mum and dad used to get.) we rolled out. Deservedly busy on a Monday night, it’s definitely a good standby option for a cheap eat in Camberwell, if not somewhere you’d make a journey for.

I’m a New Yorker in South London. I generally do not like Italian food in London. It is not what I crave. The pizza just depresses me here. However, I very much like my Italian local, Caravaggio’s.(Well, my local is La Luna, but I’ve only been there once– nuff said.) It’s a strange place. The décor is a bit Midwestern, very clean, with pretty wallpaper and a bit grandiose yet comfortable. The service is very grownup male waiters– the sorts you can trust to make you comfortable and provide well. And the food is, unbelievably for this part of the world, very reasonably priced. I’ve never tried the pizza(I really am too much of a New Yorker to tolerate anything other than a plain Sicilian, maybe some mushrooms) but the pastas are quite good– tasty, simple, very homemade, filling and absolutely unpretentious. The veggie gnocchi is really nice and tasty. So is the linguine with clam sauce and the house vegetarian pasta. Like pasta I make at home if I feel like it, but nothing beats going to a restaurant and not having to do the dishes. And I do love the wallpaper.

Thanks to the reviews on Unilocal!I enjoyed a lovely lunch in this clean and cosy environment. The food was delicious and atmosphere was friendly and welcoming. The food costs are comparable to a Harvester whilst the service, atmosphere, and food is far superior. If you had the choice which would choose?

Caravaggios only arrived in Camberwell in 2007 but feels like its been there for years already. It’s the staff, they’ve made the site theirs; it has a real community feel; the friendly, charming waiters will remember your name and treat you with proper Italian hospitality. There is a small café area at the front where I love to bag a booth, and sit with a coffee/tea and a book, to while some hours away until a friend comes to join and share a cake(the tiramisu is particularly excellent). At the back there is a much more formal restaurant area that buzzes by night and is surprisingly grand for its price. This is where Caravaggio most excels; its value — a main course averages at about £5 and the portions are huge. A starter would be enough for some. And a coffee is only £1 — amazing compared to the coffee chains. So yes, I love Caravaggios. I can’t recommend it enough. It’s good-looking and quality enough for any type of social setting from family meal to first date, and at the same time cheap enough for those on a budget. A wonderful addition to Camberwell Church Street for sure. Charming I think is the best word.

The banner outside reads ‘Italian Café’ but it is definitely more than that. Possibly is referred to as a café because of its low prices, but it has all the customer service and atmosphere of a restaurant. Don’t expect the tiny pretentious portions of some restaurants, they are not stingy which is always good especially when you pay £6.95 for Pasta Carbonora. It is not an exquisite taste, it tastes more like something you would make at home and serve to your liking. Friendly staff make the evening pleasant and the soft background opera music complements an all round evening. Surprisingly, the selection of pizza is on the low side, but it is easily made up by the desserts which are indeed a treat, try the cheesecake or the tiramisu. Carvaggio’s is a good excuse to stay away from the stove for an evening, and to have a coffee stop in the afternoon.

The real attraction of this place is its low prices, and general value for money. It’s a good place for lunch as you get a good portion of decent food for cheaper than in the evening. The food is good, but not always great. Their pasta dishes are best, and the range of starters is not bad either. They also serve sandwiches and paninis, and can do them to take-away. Their coffees are a bit on the small side, but are cheap. Friendly staff make it a generally safe place to eat.

Absolutely fantastic little Italian restaurant in Camberwell. Service brilliant and food lovely. And it’s cheap as chips. Pasta main courses are a fiver, and fish meat etc 7÷8÷9 quid. The décor’s good. There’s a tiny(not that charming) little patio garden.
