I guess everyone knows, but A Bathing Ape is a Japanese street wear brand that was established about 15 years ago and was relatively recently globally popularized by the Rap New Wave, notably Pharrell. This small, but well designed store by Golden Square is there only outlet in the UK and consequently very popular. The clothes are displayed with great care and, as Sarah L. noted, are interesting due to their bold colours and designs. It’s not really to my taste but I think the strong use of colour is to be applauded, particularly here in the UK where grey seems to be universally de rigour. I do wonder how much life the brand has left. Still, if you’re into the preppy –hip hop look and have some cash to play with this is a great shop with some interesting items.

I’ve always been a sucker for A Bathing Ape boy. The oversized, bright hoodies, the tees, the hats… Worn by the likes of Kanye West and Pharrell, there has been a lot of hype around A Bathing Ape since it’s inception, but I think it’s well due — unique prints, bold colours and style. The store itself is super cool and unique, reflective of the brand. And to my fellow reviewer, the reason there’s often queues out the door is that to die-hard BAPE fans, a limited-edition is worth it’s weight in gold(just check eBay). According to one of the staff, «A Bathing Ape» is short for the Japanese saying«bathing in lukewarm water», which means to complacently over indulge. This is, ironically, a reference to the lazy opulence of the younger generation of Japanese, the brand’s own customers. Oh, how I love an ironical phrase.

I just don’t get this store. Well I do understand that it is very hip and cool, trendy, different and again, cool. But I don’t see why? This Japanese store is specialized in urban street wear. I just don’t see«that thing» in their designs, for me it is just(over priced) hoodies and t-shirts with prints. I suppose the limited editions displayed like art works makes it more tempting, but still. I occasionally walk by the shop and there is often queue outside. Please somebody explain to me as I think there must be something that I fail to see!
