One of many Liverpool establishments to be called The Beehive, this pub is the best known for it’s lively atmosphere and traditional Liverpool charm. Situated now in the middle of Liverpool One it is the best place to take part in the only worth while consumer pursuit — drinking. When the sun is out you will find many sat happily, pint in hand on the streetside tables looking on at the hectic shoppers racing by. The place only seems to have gotten better with the arrival of the new shopping centre. Although still thoroughly an old man’s drinking den, the atmos seems to have truned into an equally bright and cheery f**k you to the shoopers rather than a surly shrug. The Beehive once seemed like one of those pubs that belonged to it’s own little world but while keeping its character has a more open feeling within its new surroundings.

There are quite a few pubs in Liverpool named The Beehive but my favourite has to be this place mainly because of its excellent location right at the heart of Liverpool and in close proximity to Liverpool One. This place is a typical old man’s pub if you will and this is no bad thing as they no how to pour a good pint and provide a warm and relaxing atmosphere. At most times of day this place has a good crowd of drinkers inside all of whom seem to be friendly and welcoming. The staff are welcoming also and really make sure that you feel welcome as a valued customer. There is food available here and it is worth a try it is mainly home cooked dishes which really hit the spot when you are in need of a good eat. The prices are excellent for such a central pub and as such this place is a winner every time.

A crack-in-the-wall kind of pub that doesn’t seem to resemble anything in a five hundred yard radius around it, the Beehive(not to be confused with the other Beehive) is the perfect place to duck into if you’ve shown up too early for a film at the Odeon or you just want to escape the throng outside before you go mad. Here a seat is always available and the barmaid always serves your drink with a helpful sneer. There’s something about the way the clattering din of shoppers’ high heels fades away as you move into the shabbily cosy back room that make this place seem impregnable. Maybe it’s because it managed to survive when everything to one side of it was torn down. Maybe it’s just the fact it’s always so full. After all, if a slavering timber wolf came though the door, it’d take a while to get to you.

The Beehive is surrounded by a swarm of shoppers in the streets of L1 commercial heaven. It’s the epitome of traditional and has been around much longer and knows it. A bit like like the grandad that’s confused by the i-pod(thingi-majig) that his grandson has bought and unimpressed turns back to his paper,(what’s wrong with cassettes?). It’s also definitely as you might have fathomed, an old man’s pub. A decent pub although slightly scuffed round the edges and a good alternative for pre-cinema drinks(Odeon is just an escalator away) if you’re not a cocktail kinda guy. It’s also nice to grab a seat outside to gloat at the crazed shoppers while you sit back.

The beehive is one of the few pubs in the vicinity of Liverpool One that remains true to its heritage and maintains the support of its regulars. By not selling out to the commercialisation of central Liverpool, the beehive has remained a well preserved, beautifully traditional English pub in the centre of a busy shopping centre. A wide selection of draught beers are on offer at the large bar and sports are shown on its two, somewhat oddly positioned Flat screen TVs, this makes watching sport quite uncomfortable and so I wouldn’t recommend this as the place to go to watch the next big match! The beehive is a great place to have a break from shopping and if the weather is nice try to get yourself some seats under the awning at the front door to catch some sun and watch the shoppers walk by! Due to its prime location, this is not the cheapest pub in town, yet its still worth a visit as it is very interesting inside and is very convenient for Liverpool one.

The Beehive is one of few remaining traditional pubs in the Liverpool One area of the city centre. It’s nice to see a bit of character remain in amongst all the commercial stores that have swamped this part of the city. Although not as friendly as other traditional city pubs such as The Globe and Coopers, The Beehive still retains some of the ‘old man’s pub’ character that really shows off the warm personality of the city’s residents. One of the best features of The Beehive is the simple and traditional pub food on offer; it’s one of those pubs that you can buy a pork pie or a homemade ham batch from behind the bar whilst you sip local ale. At the back of the pub is a seated area where you can try the selection of hot gastro dishes such as gammon and chips or a selection of jacket potatoes and fillings. There isn’t a huge selection of beers on draught, but prices are fairly reasonable, especially for food, so therefore this place is a great traditional alternative to the more commercial cafes/bars that sit around the corner in the depths of Liverpool One.

Nestled in the midst of commercial paradise, The Beehive flouts the new buildings surrounding it, holding on tightly to the traditionalism it appears to represent. In fact, at this particular time, there is a large and colourful dragon painted on the windows, in anticipation of St George’s Day. Even though, as a city, we tend to get more excited about Paddy’s Day, it’s nice to see that some establishments haven’t forgotten what country they’re in. Last time I was in here I was accompanied by Red Watch of the local Fire Station(don’t ask) and we were all squashed into the area directly in front of the bar. As it was the week before Christmas, it was understandably busy, but thanks to the company I was keeping, I never had to battle over to the bar to get a round in. Nice chaps, firemen… Anyway, this is your typical pub that is full of all walks of life from Liverpool. Not quite at the same level as the karaōke pubs like Cooper’s, it still retains all the character of an old man’s pub. Patrons are friendly and chatty, and you don’t feel guilty for listening in on a conversation and laughing along with a joke. There’s a convenient smoker’s area at the front, and as the pub isn’t that large, people tend to spill out to the front if the weather is nice enough. Not a massive range of beers and ales, but enough to keep everyone happy.
