Flanagan’s Apple

This place is ok – decent beers and drinks. Restrooms could be better but they aren’t horrendous. But for the life of me I cannot understand why they only have food on certain levels. I’ve been here twice in a couple of days and both times they wanted you to order and eat food on the top level (which is dead). If I’d like to order an appetizer on the main level where we are having drinks, I think I should be able to. For that reason, we won’t be back.

A shadow of its former self. The only thing that is the same are the gambling obsessed barstaff. I’ve never been in a pub and seen someone play a fruit or quiz machine and service literally grind to a halt. I’ve seen people verbally abused for having been on the machines. Erm, I am no gambling sort but I thought those things were there to fleece people, so why abuse those that fall into the trap?! Once upon a time, when the year began 19., this was a must-​go-​to pub. I took many prospective Mrs Dave’s there in the old days and they almost always loved it. I took one six months ago (not a local) on a crawl of my old haunts and of all of them this was the one she asked never ever to be taken to again. Case closed

Yum. Great lunchtime deals + free wifi! Pleasant, customer focused staff & tasty food.
Its location in the Cavern Quarter makes it the perfect stopping point for anyone who came for the Beatles’ stomping grounds.
To the reviewer complaining about its lack of authenticity — I’m surrounded by Irish patrons so perhaps your views on what is «authentic» are the issue, not the venue.

Large portion sizes, friendly staff, good value for money, folk music playing in the background, clean

Visit this place at night and you’ve made a terrible mistake. Visit it during the Mathew Street Festival and you deserve everything you get. Packed with sweaty, dancing Scousers and tourists, the pub begins to resemble the darkest corners of a Hieronymus Bosch painting. Hellish.
However, those four stars up there are for what this place is like in the daytime. With no revellers cluttering up the place, you can see what the designers were probably hoping to achieve when they first stuck a shovel in the ground and set forth their plan for Flanagan’s Apple. Sure, the dusty antiques and blackboard quotes are as fake as Wogan’s wig (the place only became an Irish bar in 1984) but sipping an afternoon cider you tend to ignore this and imagine yourself sitting in the Prancing Pony. Just make sure you get out before night falls.

Christ this place is annoying. Unlike many of the authentic Irish pubs that litter the city and have either integrated their identity into scouse tradition over decades or kept their ties close to those with Ireland this place seems to be purely set out to encourage any stereotype for all the tourist flocking down Matthew St and make a solid buck out of it. Fair enough, give the tourists what they want.
Flanagan’s is not even the most annoying bar down Matthew Street — there are plenty of pubs milking scouse heritage — its Matthew St home of the Cavern and The Beatles!
But all this Oirish-​ness means that the place does get very busy and the queue for the bar can be horrendous. However it’s the music that gets me — diddly diddly music with fiddles and such like! I mean real Irish don’t even like that stuff — we all know there national anthem is something by Bryan Adams.

Flanagan’s is somewhere I always used to end up on a staff night out in Liverpool. I don’t know how it happened, but after the first time we went there it became a bit of a tradition to get sozzled after work and go there.
We even added to the tradition on one particularly drunken evening in the basement, where there are wooden beams on the ceiling. Myself and a mate were mock-​irish-​dancing and basically throwing ourselves around the place, when he bet me I couldn’t do a high kick and hit the wooden beam. Now I don’t remember what I did, but I know that he stuck his tongue out the side of his mouth in concentration and proceeded to injure himself AND rip his trousers. Hilarity ensued.
Anyway, the pub: as you may have gathered, it’s a good place for groups of people to go, as there is a fair bit of space. It gets pretty packed though so if you’re an early drinker make this place one of the first to go to. There is often live music downstairs and the bar is plentiful and roughly standard pub prices.

Ce pub est énorme, ambiance géniale, musique live tous les soirs (souvent des anciens… mais qui mettent un sacré bazar!!)
Les scousers sont fantastiques n’hésitant pas à chanter le you’ll never walk alone et d’autres chants à faire trembler les murs !!

Super Pub in der City of Liverpool. Wir besuchten dieses Pub auf Empfehlung eines LFC-​Bekannten nach dem Fussball Match zwischen Liverpool FC und Sunderland AFC.
Super Stimmung, Live-​Music und viele Getränke zur Auswahl.
Einzige Minuspunkte in unseren Augen sind die langen Wartezeiten am Tresen und die nicht einladenden Toiletten im Kellerbereich des Irish Pubs.
