We walked in for dinner without a reservation and were seated promptly. The interior is decorated to give a very cozy feel yet intimate feel(dim lighting with candles). The service was very good and fairly quick; our waitress gave me a glass of iced tap water without my asking, which really pleased me(if you’re American you know the struggle of water and European restaurants). The location is great, right next to the harbor. You can go for a nice walk after dinner and enjoy the water and beautiful houses. [FOOD] Bergen Fish Soup: This looks and(unfortunately) tastes like any chowder you can find at a restaurant. It was nice and creamy, but it didn’t taste special. The bread crisps on the side were a nice addition. Steamed Filet of Halibut: The champagne sauce does a lot for the dish. It’s incredibly buttery and creamy. The dish was cooked very well; the meat still had a very faint fish taste that wasn’t bad at all, and it was very tender. The peas(I don’t think in season) were nice and crunchy… if only they were in season. The asparagus was nice and fresh. The caviar was… I guess what it should be: fishy and salty. It was pretty good quality I think? It also comes with like 5 small potatoes that are pretty good(and filling). Solid dish. Steamed Mussels in White Wine Sauce: Prepare to do a lot of work for your food. The dish is a giant pot filled with small mussels. There are a LOT of mussels. I recommended going through the trouble of extracting the meat from the shell and dropping it to them bottom before eating. It allows the meat to soak in the really good sauce. A small downside was that pieces of shell sometimes found their way into the bites of meat. The fries smelled so amazing… but they were okay. Not bad though; make sure to ask for ketchup lest you want to enjoy all the salt in the dishes. Veiled Peasant Girls: A very interestingly named dessert. It was a little disappointing. The apple was okay, and the cream was a bit too light to do anything. I felt it was more of a chore than pleasure finishing it. It didn’t taste bad though. Draft Beer: It’s called Hansa, and it’s a Bergen beer(I stole this info from another review oops). It’s a dark beer, and it tasted pretty good. [OVERALL] All the food was good, but it wasn’t enough to warrant a 5 star rating for me. The restaurant does deserve a solid 4 stars though. The bill came out to 900NOK(~$ 105), which is a little on the high side. I do recommend the restaurant and wouldn’t mind coming back!

Dinner service was super slow due to overbooking. However… the staff was very friendly and worked very hard. For approx. $ 50, you get the double serving of lutefisk. Before I arrived, I asked my Norwegian connection as to what I should get. He said lutefisk. I was not aware of that it’s a seasonal item and many places did not serve it until later in the year. I was lucky then this place did. They gave you so much of it that all you ever want to do afterwards is to crawl to bed. It was fermented fish in lye. It reminds me of hakarl(aka fermented shark meat) in iceland, and your garden variety of salted fish in southern China. It is a required taste and I absolutely LOVEDIT. Not that I had any real comparison, but this seemingly endless lutefisk festival makes me so happy that all I ever wanted to do is to eat this, non stop. The waitstaff was delighted that I liked it, that he insisted on giving me the fish butt of the fish, which is the second part of the two part lutefisk eating event. I felt like a tribal chief who was given the best delicacy only because I was the chief. Though it’s a bit silly when you think about it, the fish’s other side is fishier and even ore fermented. I wonder why. Whale capriccio is on the menu. It’s not for everyone. I liked it just fine. The draft beer was quite delicious and it’s Hansa, a local brew from Bergen. Of course it’s good. I had two of those guys as it took over an hour for the food to arrive. Waitstaff proudly told me they would be serving sheep’s head soon. I whipped out my iPhone and showed him me devouring a smoked sheep head in Iceland. He then showed me his photo of their sheep head, not as smoked, and will be ready in a couple of days. However, if I insisted, he said, they can get me the dish by the next day. We bonded. He and I, over sheep head and lutefisk. I don’t think you can fault the guy for a slow kitchen service. I liked my food very much. And that free Hansa he poured as he started to feel bad about me waiting for the food. I did not crawl to bed after. I went for a stroll in the dark to let lutefisk settle. Bryggen harbour was quiet. I was alone. It was a nice evening. I think I like Norway slightly more than Sweden just about right there and then.

Cozy restaurant with a choice of whale steak or reindeer meat. I chose the reindeer meat which was served with asparagus and grilled onion. I had Hansa Bayer beer which went well with my dinner.

Cozy atmosphere. The service was fantastic as well as the food served. I tried one of their open sandwiches and was not disappointed. It came with a side of French fries and I have to say, they were pretty delicious. I also really liked how they gave us an entire pitcher for water and were very on top of filling our pitcher. Also, their bread is phenomenal. It’s super soft and fluffy. Worth ordering. I highly recommend giving this place a try. I know that I will probably be coming back for their reindeer!

Good seafood! I had the Bergen fish soup and mussels with some homemade bread on the side. It was all delicious. Staff was also friendly. Best service in Norway so far. I’ll give it a yumyum!

Had«fillet of lamb» with summer veggies, norwegian lager, followed by «illy» espresso, dark chockolade and Bergen Cognac. The meet was all right, pink inside but the root veggies were undercooked for my taste. Potatoes salted with sea salt, and they bring you propper pepper grainder. If it was not for the undercooked veggies, and thing called Illy that pretends to be espresso, they would get 5 stars. Service was way more polite than I am used back in Stockholm, but the real gem for me was the Bergen Cognac… Got a second round, what the hell?! Yes, Norway is rather expensive, but thats not any news. You are in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Worth the price! As I finish this review, people are queuing, 7:10pm. Last plus: they let you smoke outdoors. So civilized!

This was just around the corner from our hotel — lucky us! I had the halibut with asparagus & potatoes in a champagne cream sauce. One of the best preparations I’ve ever tasted … perfectly cooked, moist, savory and yet still light & healthy. If I’m ever back in Bergen, I’ll return to try out the meat dishes.

This place is right on the main drag of Bergen harbour, near the pretty Bryggen houses. It’s a real pub feel — very relaxed and informal. A bit romantic even as it gets darker. You can book a table — pop in and reserve one in the morning for that evening, or chance a booking. The food here is good — above average standard and I thought the moules frites were very tasty(although obviously stirred too vigorously as a lot of the shells had broken). My dinner partner had the reindeer(pretty exotic for us English folk) and it was tasty(a bit like beef, for those like us not in the know), but the whole dish was a bit cold when it arrived. Staff when I popped my head in during the morning to book a table weren’t especially friendly or helpful, but the guy who served us in the evening was lovely and did a great job. So, to conclude, a good spot — worthy of a meal — but I think there might be better out there in Bergen if you’re looking for a special meal out.

Rainy day in Bergen — no surprise there. We popped in for a bowl of fish soup and stayed for mussels and then a plate of monkfish served with chorizo, tomatoes, peppers and zucchini. Everything was wonderful, especially the service. Our waiter was helpful with the menu and personable. Worth a stop if you make it to Bergen.

My wife and I had lunch here and it was very good. She had open faced chicken sandwich with fries. I had salted cod with potatoes and chili. I didn’t have any idea what I was getting, but the salted cod was tender and good, it was served over a tomato, onion, and potato stew. A traditional dish I guess. In any case it was very tasty. The bread served with it was also very good. Coffee was good and refills were included! Price for both was about 400NOK. Service was pleasant and prompt.

We came here based on the recommendation from a hotel staff. The place is located next to the harbor and the views are amazing. Be sure to get a seat upstairs by the window. The food is a little above average. We ordered the cod and seafood platter. The cod was pretty good, but a little disappointed with the seafood platter. The mussels were overcooked. The shrimps are ok. The snow crab is actually tasty. The place has been around for some time and do stop by if you are around the area.

We have been so fortunate to find all the best restaurants in Bergen. This one may seem like a tourist trap because of its location and look. But don’t be fooled, although the service can be a little rough the food is the most traditional and well made. In our only 5 days stay in Bergen we ate at this place twice, we had the reindeer(not my taste but yet good), the wale carpaccio(very nice and interesting), and the five start dishes(to our standard — foodies from Miami) were the Cod fish Norwegian style(similar to Bacalo Viscaina) and the Halibut filet. I cannot begin to say how delicious and fulfilling those dishes were. I could have them once a week! Their potatoes selection is great too! Their mussels were fresh but the butter beer based sauce I’m not used to its heaviness. Otherwise amazing!!!

We had a wonderful dinner here last night. I had the mussels which were so tender and flavorful — might have been the best ever. Wife’s steak was nice –gratin potatoes were great — not drowned in cheese. Staff was friendly and price was fair.

Pros: — quick, professional service — delicious, hearty fish soup and bread — lunch menu is very reasonably priced, and if eaten later(it’s served until 4 I think?) can stand in for dinner — centrally located — warm, cozy, pretty interior Cons: — I asked for a seat nearer the back of the dining room(I’m probably weird — prefer my back to a wall and a bit further away from other patrons), but was told that area was closed off until later in the night. I looked at the empty 4-person tables in the available nooks, but the hostess firmly planted me at a 2-person table in the middle of the room, right along the path they take to bring dishes to the diners in the front part. It was a bit distracting and uncomfortable to have one of them walk by so closely every few minutes(not their fault, they did have brisk service, and I could have again asked for another table at this point). I noticed men eating alone too, but at «better» tables, further back from the walkway, and maybe 20 minutes later a couple came in and was shown to the back of the dining room where I had been denied earlier. Don’t know if they sat me at that particular table to keep an eye on me to ensure I wasn’t going to dine and dash, but it felt like that. Got that vibe from the hostess especially, but the server was very friendly and provided excellent service — bathroom stank(but could just have been the person before) — these are small, personal things, but just enough for me to not have the best experience, you know? Overall: would go back again to try all their food, but just firmer in my table choice

The mussels were the best I have ever had with a sauce that I would love if they would give me a recipe. I also tried reindeer which was very tender. I did have the liberal vs foodie dilemma when I saw whale on the menu.(I didn’t do it, but did ask many questions and that worked for me) Bacalao is a very historic dish to the west side of Norway and does not read like it would be something you would order but this salted cod fish stew is something worth ordering. To the person who claimed to get food poisoning at the restaurant. He most likely came by cruise ship, train or bus and most likely caught something there. I am a physician and people always blame a restaurant when most of the time they caught it on their travels. No offense Aaron. I hope you recovered quickly but I also had the reindeer and would eat it again.

Really enjoyed our meal here. The fish was delicious. My husband had the salmon and the sauce was out of this world. I had the cod with the chorizo and sausage(was like a hash) that was delicious. One son even had the reindeer and finished every bite. We had the opportunity to try the moose and it was really good, too. Took a point off because it was the most expensive meal we had and I don’t know that it was worth it — even knowing Norway is expensive.

Nous y avons mangé lors de notre séjour à Bergen. La nourriture est excellente notamment le reindeer dommage que le service soit un peu«froid». Nous avons toutefois adoré l’atmosphère dégagée par ce bistrot vintage.

My family ate here for dinner and everything was delicious and we finished everything! We came around 10 at night so there were only a few other customers and the staff started eating as well. I had the chicken salad with mango and curry sauce and it was good! The chicken was super tender and the mango was fresh and sweet. I thought the curry dressing would taste funny with the mango but it worked well together. The complimentary bread had a texture similar to pound cake and it was tasty as well. I had some of my mom’s salmon, my dad’s steak, and my sister’s veggie lasagna and loved everything! I would recommend the lasagna if you’re craving some comfort food. The salmon and steak came with potatoes and I would recommend the cheesy potatoes. The fried potatoes were good as well but I liked the cheesy ones the best! The salmon and steak weren’t the best I’ve had but they were decent. Prices were expensive but due to the conversion rate being confusing and everything being super expensive in Norway, it didn’t really shock me. My salad was around $ 30 and it was the cheapest thing we ordered. It was around $ 150 for all four dishes including tip.

This was one of the most fun dinners we had in Norway. We chose this place because it had reindeer, which my boyfriend wanted to try. It has a very heavy, meat-centric menu, but decent variety. After lots of consideration, I got the venison. The dishes look lovely, and come with a choice of potatoes. They are massive servings on the main, then a huge portion of potatoes as well! I tried the reindeer and found it to be good although with an unexpected sweetness. My venison was not very gamey at all, cooked well and was interestingly served with cloudberries, which added a tart contrast to my meat. My only complaint was out starter. We got an order of garlic bread, which was quite literally a piece of bread. That was a bit of a bummer, as at NOK50 that seemed to be taking some liberties. Service wasn’t particularly friendly, but professional and efficient, so no complaints there. It’s decorated like a nautical pub, which was kinda charming, All in all, it’s a nice place and well worth a visit, especially if you want to try some of the local specialty meats.
