Ink Bar is not, as the name might suggest, somewhere where writers meet up and discuss camus over espressos and whiskey on the rocks. Instead, it is one of the dirtiest places in Auckland — and I mean dirty in the good, Clint Eastwood on a bender kind of way. Ink plays host to a wide range of electronic music, forming a sort of spiritual home of Auckland’s not-quite-commerical dance sound. This means you can catch international acts who haven’t quite broken through here for as low as five dollars if you get lucky. They have a cool smoking area with bamboo and an open ceiling, and if Coherent is open you can walk through between the two bars. Well worth penciling in as a bender destination.

Ink was a former regular hangout, although this was not usually pre-planned. Personally, it is one of my more favoured venues on K’Road, Ink is the slowed down version of Coherent, which usually accommodates everyone’s inner party self, while Ink tends to those searching for a quiet-er drink. That is, if there no gig on in Ink itself. If there is, chaos usually ensues, with the dance-floor becoming a blockade to the toilets and outdoor area from the bar. All is well-tempered though, with the dungeon-like venue a stark contrast from the bars further downtown in the Viaduct and Britomart. The bouncers are very friendly, always helping to contribute to the sociable vibe of the place.

Ink Bar is the pierced, tattooed and slightly dangerous sister of Coherent. These two bars often have joint events so you can flirt between them both(and I shouldn’t have to explain the play on words with their names). Ignore the almost shabby entrance from K road and get down the stairs to this awesome little bar. You will find that you like it as rough and as dirty as her. (I’d like to mention that I have ended my metaphor with the previous paragraph because it may be misconstrued when I say it’s a tight but comfortable fit down there.) One of the best clubs Auckland has to offer with heavy, pounding bass and staff as hyped as you are. Couches, courtyard, intimate dance floor directly in front of the DJ– a great place to catch some house, techno and sometimes international artists. I am a big fan of seeing Aural Trash play here, although sometimes a small lake can form in the smoking area if it has been raining.

This basement club has been a mainstay of K road for many, many years. The frontage onto K road is simply a door with a small sign above it, but if you don’t know where it is, you aren’t in the know. This small club hosts lots of local talent on the up and coming, as well as some smaller internationals, but the underground vibe, the actually very decent sound system and the open-air area out the back that on some nights actually connects it to Coherent, the club next door, makes for a fun, self-contained little world.
