Loved this place. Food was excellent. Served fast, with friendly staff. BYO was a bonus. Would be great for a big group.

Sunday nights in my household are pretty lazy so this last weekend we went Indian! We went with the vegetable korma and garlic paratha and wasn’t overly wow’d with either. The korma had good spice and was tasty but didn’t impress enough for me to return. The food came out really quick and the waiters were really friendly and helpful. Wouldn’t run back here but it was ok.

Love this place. The Dahi Puri is always a great way to start your culinary journey thru South India at Satya’s. The Uthapam is to die for. you will be full.

#1 Indian in Auckland! It’s a big call but there isn’t much to fault here. One of the few remaining BYO restaurants around, this place also offers cheap wine by the glass($ 4.90 for a glass of sav) and a variety of beers. As an entrée we had the bhel puri which was an interesting mix of veggies and puffed rice but the dahi puri was the winner of the night. As mentioned in almost all the other reviews for Satya, this is a shared entrée made of chickpeas, tamarind chutney, yoghurt and spices. A flavour explosion and the clear favourite of the night! The curries are quite different to your standard butter chicken or tikka massala(although they serve both). The curries here aren’t as dense and heavy with sauce which is great as you can really taste the freshness of the flavours coming through. The South Inidian lamb curry was delicious, but the stand out was the Murg Badami — a yummy, tender chicken curry that was devoured by the table! The pancake style dosa was good with a variety of dips to try with it. The décor is unique with bellowing fabric flowing across the ceiling and the seats are draped in bright Indian fabric. The staff are friendly and I would recommend asking them for advice if you are stuck on what to order as they can point you in the right direction. If you come here during the week, be sure to take advantage of their lunchtime specials!

I really wanted to love this place. I am a huge fan of south indian cuisine, and they have all the chaat favorites on the menu. The décor should have been my first indication, as it is a bit showy for a legit Indian place. We started with the dahi puri, which was very tasty, but I was a bit put off with the level of sweetness to the dish. I dismissed it thinking it must have just been a ratio thing with the imli ki chutney(tamarind chutney). I think this was the best thing we got, all things considered. Then the entrees came out. I got the satya special uthappam… don’t recommend getting a version with cheese on it unless you want a pretty good imitation of an Indian english muffin pizza. If i were to ever go back, I’d get an uthappam without cheese. It was a little weird. My biggest beef, however, was with the sweetness of all the sides. The raita was sweetened. The coconut chutney was sweetened. The tomato chutney was sweetened. Even the sambar was sweet — that was not something I’ve ever experienced before. I can deal with one sweetish option to cut the heat on Indian food(the food wasn’t all that spicy hot), but everything? It was just not right at all. I really wanted some masala chai to finish the meal, but I skipped it for fear that it would be sickeningly sweet after all the sweetness in their foods. I am not at all sure what is up with this place, but they really need to dial it down with the sugar. The service was very friendly and kind, the chef came out to say hello. It was nice, but sorry, the food just isn’t that good. I’ll continue my quest for the perfect dosa, chaat, and uthappam elsewhere. Please, can we get a branch of Vik’s in Auckland? I know it’s a lot to ask… but… :(

Like others that dahi puri is amazing. I am not sure if this is the Great North Rd one??? Sorry if I’m wrong. I got there 10 minutes early with my boy«Tommy»(2). They were awesome gave him some awesome figurines. I was confused as they were still in box and I didn’t want him ripping it apart and asked — are they to stay here? They replied no no take them home. Lovely staff and fantastic food. Certainly returning.

Satya: go for the dahi puri, stay for the… well, umm, the other entrees. The entrees are by the far the best thing about this place. Tamarind! Yes! Pani Puri! Yes! Fresh coriander! Yes! Other delicious things! Yes! The mains, on the other hand, always seem to be «fine» rather than«YES I WANTTOEATALLTHELENTILS!» I can’t speak to the meat-y mains here, but keep in mind that Southern Indian cusine is primarily vegetarian and seafood based, so you’re probably better off in these parts of the menu anyway. Service can be non-existent or super enthusiastic; you could get upset about it, but are you really to change a waiter’s personality by getting upset about it? Probably not; if it bothers you, go somewhere else. The prices are starting to creep up a little bit, so if you’re after a super cheap night out, go to one of the other places round here.

The staff at Satya are about the most tolerant people I’ve ever met in a restaurant. They don’t seem to mind when umpteen people want to split a bill, they’re very good at helping with dietary requirements, and when someone at your table gets drunk within an inch of their life, Satya will bring them water and make sure they’re okay. That person was me — thanks Satya, you’re the greatest. As for the food, I highly recommend Satya’s signature dish — the dahi puri. Holy mother of God, these tiny bursts of flavour always go down a treat and are gone in no time.

Mmmmmmmm Satya. This place is so yum. I most recently went here with a group of 14 for a BYO, and it was a super fun night. The staff were really accommodating, even though the night went the way all BYO’s do(down rowdy street). The décor is how I like it — dark and moody. The restaurant itself is pretty small which makes it always seem cosy — and more importantly, the smaller the room the bigger the party! Everyone who knows Satya will tell you one thing: Get the Dahi Puri! And they ain’t lying, this stuff is so damn good. Just get it. The menu is pretty big and everything that I’ve tried is delicious. If you’re one of those people who only gets butter chicken… firstly, I feel sorry for your taste buds, secondly, branch out, you’ll be pleased you did. Pricing is pretty moderate, one warning though — they say one bill per table. So maybe sort out if all your group is getting entrees, otherwise things might get a little awkward when it comes time to pay.

Where to start on the Satya menu? That’s easy: Dahi Puri, please. This delicious entrée doesn’t have«must try» next to it on the menu for nothing. It has six pieces, and the mix of yoghurt, boiled potato and chick peas with tamarind chutney and ground spices doesn’t only stimulate the taste buds, it makes you greedy — you won’t want to share. Satya’s south Indian cuisine is full-flavoured and a long way from the butter chicken you’ll find at your local food court. Deliciously affordable is also a plus. BYO wine(last time I went); you really shouldn’t be eating your Indian anywhere else.
