Majer was founded by a German family in 1924, which started off as a bakery and grew into a high-quality chain selling much more than bread. Majer offers a wide selection of fresh pastries, mignon, biscuits and sandwiches, savory pastries, pies, and many other specialty items. Their pastries are made fresh daily and they offer«artiginale»(artisanal) gelato made with organic milk. The ladies at the counter were friendly and polite in offering us a seat in the café. We inquired about paying after ordering our paninis, but they offered to bring them to us once seated and said we could pay at the end of the meal. The seating is in a cute little area decorated with wine bottles made my Majer, and while seating is limited it was nice to be tucked away from the crowd. Both the Genovese Panino on focaccia and the Prosciutto de Parma with arugula on fresh baked bread were delicious. We paid € 11,50 for two toasted paninis and a small apple juice — a great value and a tasty, quick meal in Venice! After lunch the first day, we couldn’t resist returning the next morning to try their freshly made pastries. The almond croissant was delicious! The chocolate croissant was generously stuffed with chocolate spread. I prefer dark chocolate baked into the center, but my husband was quite happy with the chocolatey filling. This is a great place to try if you’re staying at the Locanda Sant’ Agostin as this café is just around the corner. Enjoy!
