When a call goes out to friends and family looking for recommendations for restaurants in Rome, Piperno tops the list of many. There is a reason for this. A quiet corner of the Jewish ghetto, white table cloth, great unobtrusive service and the famous artichoke, Jewish style. Delicious. We had the mixed appetizers – artichoke, rice balls, mozzarella… and then spaghetti vongole(clams) and fettuccini carbonara. Finished with tiny wild strawberries. Life is sweet.

Excellent food and great service. As others have noted, the Jewish artichokes are outstanding, and the linguine with clams and seafood risotto were also fantastic. Highly recommended.

Best meal we had in a 10 day trip across Italy was here. The artichoke was great, and pasta carbonara was incredible! Service and atmosphere were also perfect. Very romantic setting with the outdoor dining.

Went to this restaurant in end of April and it was delicious! It is a tourist spot and there were a lot of tourists there however, it was also filled with locals. Pretty upscale place with some people dressing up and some who were very casual(like us). We ordered the fried sampler appetizers and it was so good! The fried artichoke was the highlight and I wished I had ordered more. I have had fried artichokes in other places in Rome but this was by far the best. It was perfectly fried, not dripping in oily, seasoned well and so fresh. The other fried cheese, zucchini flowers, etc. was equally delicious. We also ordered their seafood pasta and seafood risotto. This was so-so and the risotto was overly salty. But the main course of freshly grilled prawns more than made up for the poorly executed pasta and risotto. One of the downsides to this place is that the servers can be a bit snooty/cold if they know you are a tourists and not dressed as fancy. I didn’t pay any mind since the food was excellent and we were mostly left alone. I would definitely recommend the place and would go back.

Traditional Roman-Jewish cuisine and remarkable service are the perfect combination of an outstanding food experience. Carciofi alla giudia and selection of fried starters are the strong part of Piperno’s menu, so good that you might want more of them once you had your main! Very attentive and welcoming service makes you feel very comfortable. Really a must go place while visiting or staying in Rome.

Man muß in Rom einmal Artischocken essen.

Very good. Food was great, service decent, a bit expensive, décor a bit dated. Get the Jewish-style artichokes if in season. 1 order gets you 2. Basically they cut the tops off, then fry them whole until crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Reeeaaalllly good. No dressing or seasoning is given or needed, it’s just the artichoke. We went during artichoke season — not sure how good they are out of season. Had the spaghetti with clams. Very nice. Plenty of clams, although you might be picking out bits of shell. They may have used butter in their preparation, not sure if this is a sin in Italy, but it tasted good. We also had gnocchi alla fontina, which is listed as a house specialty. Gnocchi were light, it was piping hot, cheese in the right proportions. Whats not to like? We also had the sweetbreads. Sauce was nice, but I like my sweetbreads crispier on the outside and softer inside; these were a bit chewy. Service above average for tourists in Rome(i.e., actually somewhat helpful).

One of the best meals I had in Rome. The fried artichokes, linguini with clam sauce and tripe were excellent. I don’t expect to save money when in Europe, but for what we had(with two bottles of wine), I thought it was reasonable.

Some of the best carbonara that I had while in Rome, HOWEVER, I found the atmosphere to be fairly uncomfortable and stuffy while in the restaurant. I’m used to fairly high-end places in NYC, but maybe it’s because I didn’t speak Italian that I was shoved in a corner and stared at until I finished my meal. I was the youngest person in the restaurant by a factor of three… so one may possibly want to take this into consideration when booking a table. Also, it’s quite difficult to find(in a back alley off the charted path) so be prepared to walk around for a bit(it’s around a bend and up a steep hill.) Great food however… so I would recommend it given these caveats.

This restaurant has better seating than many places in Rome. The service was also better and more attentive here. The expensive Jewish style fried artichokes are amazing and the best I have ever eaten. The spaghetti with clams was very good, however too many of the clam shells were broken into pieces and left in the spaghetti. I wondered why. The John Dorry fish filet was okay though I wouldn’t get it again. It was my first time trying this fish so I am not sure what it is supposed to taste like but I didn’t care much for how it was prepared/tasted. Definitely get the artichoke despite their prohibitive cost at two for 15 Euros!

Go here to try amazing Roman Jewish cuisine. We had rented a Vespa in Rome, and even with the Google navigation on the phone, this place was hard to find as it’s in between alleys. Can’t imagine coming here without a Vespa! I would recommend going here for the fritti(fried starters). I really went here to try the artichoke appetizer which is served«alla giudia.» I took Katie parla and Fred Plotkin’s advice(yes, I research a lot before embarking on a foodie trip anywhere in the world!) and ordered this appetizer. This«Jewish style» artichoke is deep fried whole, until golden brown, its outer leaves rendered crispy and light, and its heart sweet and delicate. It was so good, I felt I was in heaven… Initially, the server was hinting that we should order one plate and share but I ended up ordering 2 plates for my husband and me and boy, was I glad! This was the one of the best things I’ve eaten in my life(and I’ve eaten a lot of things!). The artichoke is huge(and if you aren’t greedy, you can share it with your date as it’s pretty big) and fried crispy on the outside but oh so tender and soft from the inside. It was perfectly cooked and phenomenal! The rest of the food was pretty good but it’s a bit on the pricey side. Our lunch cost us a little over 100 Euros(with one glass of wine, and 2 espressos)…Being Europe, it was good to realize that the tip was already part of the bill! The service was impeccable…5 stars for being friendly and attentive. Go here to try the fritti/fried starters, esp the artichokes when they are in season… overall, had a great time albeit a bit pricey lunch!
