This place intrigues me, Magills. I’ve walked passed it countless times and threw it the odd curious glance. But on this occasion we actually went in for a nosy. And they had all-sorts of tasty food on offer including a vast selection of Italian meats. Which seems to be their specialty. We were able to taste a green pepper crusted salami first, which was grand. So got ourselves some slices of that. They also had some tasty looking homemade mince pies on display. If I didn’t have a sister who is a one woman mince pie making machine, I would have bought some. I look forward to returning regularly.

I went into this shop today looking for pre-shelled roasted Chestnuts. A friendly young sales assistant asked me if she could help and when I told her what I was looking for, she led me over to where they had the chestnuts. I was in the middle of asking the girl whether they had been roasted already when the older ‘lady’ behind the counter shouts very gruffly over me ‘They’re steamed’. Again I was mid-sentence in reply when she barked at the younger sales assistant ’ Where’s that brush? For gods sake, I told you to get that brush!’ The whole experience left me baffled. The shop was quiet and the young sales assistant was doing her job very well until this rude woman interjected. It is no way to treat staff, and definitely no way to treat a customer! I left the shop without the chestnuts and I hope never to set foot in there again.

A name like«Magills» doesn’t exactly scream delicious Italian produce. In fact, inside and out, it looks more like a dark, cramped country pub that’s been re-purposed into a charcuterie. It boasts a range of meats and cheeses that’d give a cow nightmares, great coffee and wine, and all those other little things that make you wonder why Italy isn’t a country of walking heart-attacks. All in all, it’s a nice little spot that is a little pricey but ultimately worth the spend.

This store had a great selection of speciality products. However, the service is terrible! I went there to but chorizo and asked for information about the types that were available. The«lady» behing the counter couldn’t have been more unhelpful. She responded with a few monosyllabic retorts that screamed of «I don’t need your business» I left with the chorizo, never to return! End of …

How come I’d never heard of Magills before? I used to walk right past this little shop on a regular basis but never felt tempted to venture inside, indeed I don’t think the shop registered in my consciousness… and that is such a shame! You can get some fantastic cheeses and deli meats here as well as smoked salmon and breads. In fact, if you have friends over and want to impress them with your knowledge of good food, this should be your one-stop-shop. Even if you just go in here to have a look around, I can’t imagine anyone leaving without at least a bit of that cheese and a few slices of this salami…

If ever there was a «Wait till you see this» shop, Magills has to be it. Perfect and ancient and specialising in the most delicious charcuterie, cheeses and tapas-makings, this is the best deli and worst kept secret in the city. With an exterior that’s easily overlooked, and a shop interior that’s dark even on the sunniest day, its no surprise this place is quiet even on busy saturday afternoons. But step inside for a look at the goods and be prepared to walk out absolutely laden with delicious morsels.

Magills has been around a long time and seems to have specialised in good quality Italian produce long before you can get it anywhere else, particularly for cheeses such as mascarpone. Its also a bit of an aladins caves too. It does smell a bit of cheese, which is a good thing apparently, they also stock a wide range of oils, breads, cheeses and deli meats. Centrally located opposite Powerscourt Town house on Clarendon Street.
