9PM Sunday night, the wait wasn’t too long but still a wait to sit with other people at a table. The place was small but well decorated and completely packed. No one came to take our order and when I asked I was semi-ignored because the waitress was super focused on clearing the table. I ordered a beef chow hor fun but they had run out. So I ordered a pork chow mein($ 108HKD) instead and a gon siew yee mein($ 108HKD) or dried longevity noodles. The pork chow mein came out and hubster and I chowed down, but stopped half way expecting the other noodle dish to come out. Apparently they hadn’t even put the order in by the time I had asked, which I had anticipated having seen everyone who sat after us receive their dishes, so I cancelled the order and asked for the check. I heard later they were also out of some type of congee. Tea was $ 5HKD per person and there was also a 10% service charge. Not the best branch, worse service I’ve ever had in HK. If this restaurant has been around for so long and has so many customers all the time why is the waitstaff running around like chickens with their heads chopped off and the maitre’d scrambling trying to make things clear? But the noodles were pretty good and we were full after that dish so it worked out in that respect. I’m sure their congee and chow fun are good having read that they were bib gourmand but that doesn’t mean if your food is good then service can be bad.

Good place to try if you want to experience a variety of Hong Kong style local food. Local favorites such as wonton noodles to congee to the BBQ meats are good. I would avoid and pass on the dim sums

The Elements mall is a great place to play hide-and-seek and get completely lost, spend a few hours to kill time before heading to the airport, or just to find shelter from the rain and get some eating done. This Tasty franchise is inside the mall and for the life of me I couldn’t tell you which corner of the mall it’s located but it’s away from the high fashion stores and near that expat grocer emporium for sure. There was a slight wait for a table, as all good places do, but we were seated quickly. Tea was promptly refilled, food was greasy but good, and we were on our way in no time. I ordered some very«gwailo»(westerner-friendly) things as I’m pretty much a «gwai-mui»(a banana as some people would say — asian on the outside, Caucasian on the inside) and they were all delicious. The sauce to the fried wonton I’d skip next time. The ja lerng was way pricier than at Ocean Empire but the extra cost goes to the ambiance. The booth seating seems comfortable so request that if you are a party of 4. We were seated right next to the service counter so it was quite bustling, but in a populous city like HK, you take what you can get!
