I’m a big fan of Rico’s on Elgin Street, mainly because it serves great food, the staff a really friendly, and it never gets very busy. Oh, there is also a mariachi band, and that’s just spoiling us! It’s a fairly typical Spanish tapas bar, serving tapas delights like chorizo(which is really tasty), grilled sardines, garlic prawns, cheese and ham croquettes, as well as mains like paella. All of this is well prepared, and reasonably portioned. The cost is typical of what you would find in any of the restaurants down Elgin Street. The staff are friendly and pretty efficient, but I have seen some stresses and strains during busy periods. The owner/manager is pleasant and often comes by for a chat about nothing in particular, but the attention is nice. They do have a couple of Spanish guitarist(not sure if that technically constitutes a Mariachi band), and they play some pleasant background music, which does make me feel like I am in Marbella. Is it the absolute best in HK? Probably not, but it is in a very convenient location, the staff are decent, and you can usually walk in. I have dishes there(mentioned above) that are my tried and tested favourites, and these are always prepared to my liking. If you do go, give the sangria a go. It’s less of a sin compared to red wine, as it does have fruit in it!
