Reviewing for the bread, not the meals. Tldr: I’ve dreamed about the bread here. Literally dreamed about it. Growing up, I lived in Hong Kong for a few years. One of my fondest memories was stopping by this place and picking up bread. Not sure if they still have this(haven’t been back since 2007), but my favorite bread is a long, thin, 3-braided piece of perfection. It’s multi-layered like a croissant, crunchy on the outside & soft on the inside, and slightly sweet with just the right amount of raisins mixed in. I used to get 3 for HK$ 10. Haven’t had the same kind of bread before or since. Usually, this bread sold out long before closing time. So it was always a treat – especially when they were hot out of the oven. I would inhale the first few bites, then slow down to pick the bread apart, layer by layer, trying to delay the last bite for as long as possible… but it was never that long. This sounds like addictive behavior because it pretty much was. I don’t remember many specifics about my time in Hong Kong, but a friend just asked for food recommendations and I was surprised to be able to recall every detail of this place. Can’t believe I found it on Google Maps! Ahhh definitely made my day just thinking about this sweet sweet bread.

Among the 茶餐廳 or Cha Chong Tangs in HK, this one is not great. But there are not many in this neighborhood. The bakery part of the place is pretty good. So this place is a 3.75 in my book. I had the equivalent of «Rice Bolognese» with frozen veggies & a raw egg. I was completely as expected. With soup & iced milk tea, it came to HK$ 42 for lunch. Great deal.

This traditional canteen survives on Caine Road serves up cheap delicious fare, just west of the mid-levels escalator. The place always seems busy and the food is simple and tasty. At the front of the shop they sell traditional baked goods, making this my go to place to pickup a sausage bun on the way to work.(I highly recommend this!)

How could this low maintenance cheaply priced old style canteen survive on Caine Road(just one street above soho)? God blesses this place — rumor I heard from the Bapist church opposite to this restaurant is that there is a very generous Chiristian from the church leasing this store at a minimum price, purpose is to keep this cheap option to serve the community. This place is very popular among the Christian from the Bapist church, a very convenient choice for breakkie /quick lunch, or grab a bun before and after church event.
