Set dinner for 2 people for $ 158HKD. Traditional laksa was okay. The soup was very heavy in coconut broth, which I have to say is not my favorite. I am no laksa expert, as I only had it once in Malaysia. Eggplant was soft, there was fried tofu puff to soak up the soup(which wasn’t very salty), fish cube slices and shredded chicken. There were also clams and generous prawns with the shell on. We mixed both egg and rice noodles in there. Malaysian Curry Beef Brisket was really good. We had them with wonton noodle, which were perfect to make a sort of lo mein. Curry was perfect and beef was nicely cooked. Steamed tung choi was what it was. Then they gave us kaya toast at the end, which tasted like condensed milk, butter and lotus paste. Not an expert on this food but I quite liked it. Service was nice. The family that runs this place was chill and friendly. They made everyone feel welcome. We were completely stuffed by the end of the meal. Laksa was ok but that Curry Beef Brisket Noodle… Yum! I want to try the Yang Tofu Hor Fun next time… Looks good, but the pictures always look nicer than the dish, right? Oh and they gave us two drinks with the set meal too!

I slipped into this small Sheung Wan spot in search of laksa(a reliable craving that’s not easily met for me at home). A word of caution: don’t think about dining here if you strongly value personal space as you will most certainly be slurping all up in someone else’s grill(and they in yours) if you’re seated along the bar. Space constraints aside, Malaymama serves up some satisfying laksa. Lunch here is a quick affair on the order of 20 minutes. After finishing my bowl I was chastised for not finishing my bean sprouts and was told that next time I should order without.(Who knew that was an option?) For a quick laksa fix, Malaymama does the trick.

Malaymama, a tiny takeout/fast food restaurant in Sheung Wan. There are actually 3 restaurants on the same street that serve similar dishes, I like this one. THeir specialty is Laksa and their octopus spinach. Their Laksa is not as spicy as the traditional Laksa, better suited to the local tastebuds. Spices are available upon request. You can tell by the colour of the soup that the chef took a long time boiling all the flavours. It’s not very thick but together with the coconut milk, it was delicious. The shop owner claimed that the soup was made of over 20 catties of shrimps. No wonder there’s a strong flavour of prawn in the soup. The texture of the noodle was good that it retained its resilience of flour. The big shrimps were all fresh. If you have a big appetite, this would be excellent as the portions are huge, lots of prawns, veggies and meat. What I really like is their Octopus Spinach Salad, served cold. Upon any order, you can add this veggie dish for $ 15HKD. I’m not sure if this is a traditional Malaysian dish but I enjoyed it. It is made with spinach and octopus(as the name defines), there’s a special red sauce on top, spicy, tangy and a little peanutty, topped with crushed peanuts. The octopus is very fresh. The texture was crunchy, almost as if it was raw. Went great with the spinach as the spinach was cooked and thus the combination was perfect. The sauce went well with it, hinting Malaysian flavours with it’s spices. I haven’t been here for so long… I miss it and can’t wait to have my next serving.
