Having a great lunch here, very nice surroundings(Hotel Jen, Queen’s Rd West /HKU) and very good quality Malaysian food. Beef Curry Roti Canai, Chicken Satay, Assam Laksa all very tasty and authentic. Washed down with a decent cup of Kopi-o(local coffee). Worth booking in advance, we’ll definitely return with friends

Wanted to give Café Malacca(located on the first floor of Hotel Jen) a try since most reviews claimed it to be one of the best Straits /Malaysian /Singaporean restaurants in Hong Kong(or on the island at least). We had an order of the roti canai with beef curry, assam laksa and chicken satay. Followed by teh halia(ginger tea) to finish. As a Malaysian-born, I have to say, this is authentic though the assam laksa was rather watered down. Good place to go for a quick fix on a Sat afternoon considering it is only 20min walking distance away from me. Three star rating only because I am picky and always think there is room for improvement. Note: please reserve in advance for weekend brunches. Note: I do not have photos this time as I was famished and tucked right in

Hm one other reviewer mentioned that the laksa is pricy. Yes, it is. Remember where you are. I’ve lived all over the world and it’s hard to find authentic Singaporean outside of that island nation. So when it exists, we pay a premium for it; that’s just the way it is. Cheap food does not equal extra stars. Just sayin’.

Best Malaysian/Singaporean food in HK, though I haven’t tried everything on the menu… yet. They definitely have the best beef rendang, and so far the only one in HK that is the dry(ish) rendang rather than the thin, soupy kind that dominates the offerings in HK. Their rendang is very tender, fall-apart beef shank meat and is redolent of lemongrass and not too coconutty. The fried turnip cake and char kway teow are both very good and my dining companion claimed they were better than what she had during her last visit to Penang. Personally, I have had these dishes as eat-in and as takeout from Café Malacca and have found they are even better when quickly re-tossed in a hot pan at home(more char = more awesomeness). The ladyfingers and kangkong are both good, but the ladyfingers are definitely the winner. The kangkong, especially, is a bit too salty if you don’t have rice to help soak up the sambal belacan. I admit that, like another reviewer, I was impressed to see that they had bak chor mee on the menu and have yet to try the other noodles on the menu(the bak chor mee is good but not amazing, but still!). The fried eggplant with curry leaves is fun, but the concept is better than the taste(kind of bland, can’t really taste the eggplant over the batter).

My go to for Singaporean food! They have a kick ass Teh Halia which is so spicy it burns my mouth a little bit… Hainanese chicken rice is one of the best ones I’ve tried in HK and portions are pretty decent, though I find it quite pricey at around $ 120. The chicken skin here is white, unlike the usual frighteningly yellow ones you find in other chicken rice places in HK. I had the Chwee Kueh today, which may be a limited time item as it’s not on the regular menu. I’ve never seen chwee kueh before in HK, so was super excited to try it. Though it didn’t look very authentic, it was not bad taste wise and worth a try. I like the Kueh dadar here as well.

We came for the lunch buffet and I loved it. All the dishes were what you would be looking for if you were jonsing for some Malaysian food. I will definitely be returning and bringing my Malaysian friends with me. I am told that all off the food is brought in from Malaysia and definitely some very local chefs. M With Teh Tarik, Nasi Lemak and sago gula Melaka I’m happy

Just happened that I craved for laksa tonight and this is the nearest laksa place around. We have ordered the Singapore laksa and Assem Laksa. The singapore one is the more common one similar to those from Toast Box. Assem laksa is the Malaysian style laksa with minced fish soup which is sour in taste. Although this restaurant is recommended by Michelin, the bowls of laksa are surely overpriced. Same quality Singapore laksa can be found at the Malaya Restaurant at Bonham Road. Think I should go to my frequently visit Malaya if i ever wanting a laksa again…
