Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal

Why in heavens is there no bathrooms in this place? I literally had to squeeze it in until I got back to the hotel… Ok ok TMI… But other than that the terminal is just ok. They could do well with some better signs so you don’t have to constantly feel like a tourist asking for direction. Other than that it’s ok.

We had difficulty locating the Ferry terminal on the Hong Kong Island side. It’s inside a mall but once you see the windows with the ferry departure times in red, you’ll know you’re in the right place. On a weekday, the trip to Macau on the TurboJet economy class is 164 HKD. The return trip is 153 HKD and you can buy your return trip simultaneously for the same day.
Ferries leave approximately every 15 to 30 minutes. Although tickets are timed, they have standby lines where you can line up for an earlier departure. They’ll let you in if there’s room right before the boat departs and they’ll place a sticker on your ticket with your seat number. The whole system is very organized and it works well.
As for the boat ride itself, I got dizzy and passed out both times within the first 5 minutes. I was neither sleepy or tired. The TurboJet isn’t the smoothest ride.
P. S. You’ll need your passport for customs. Make sure to fill out the Hong Kong departure card too if you’re not a HK resident. They don’t do a very good job at stocking these cards up at the counters.

The terminal is pretty much in a shopping center (Shun Tak) which is a bit odd to me but it’s been this way for a long time! The building is a bit dated and the signage is not too clear. It’s also quite a walk from the Sheung Wan MTR station.
Because of that, I suggest that you take a cab to Shun Tak Center instead and as you know, taxi fares in HK are very affordable. There is a taxi stand with many cabs awaiting so there is no need to fight for one.
Going through customs is pretty smooth (for Hk citizens). Fast channel is not the same as e-​channel like we use at the airport though so it requires a separate registration. Regardless, since the borders are pretty lax, I don’t see a problem for foreigners to cross. I saw the lines moving pretty fast too.

The terminal was really clean– there is a currency exchange place where the rate was the most favorable– $ 7.5 HK dollars to $ 1 USD (all others were around $ 7.1 to $ 1 USD). The employees were pretty friendly and everything was fast and efficient.
Don’t forget your passport.

Very close to the MTR, so super accessible. The process to get a ticket and to get on the boats was swift, albeit confusing when I was there because there was some last minute gate changes,
The shops around the area are also great to kill time before you get on your ride.

As the name states, it’s a ferry terminal that brings you from Hong Kong to Macau. This ferry terminal is top notch, I feel like I was boarding a plane when I came here because it’s designed similar to an airport. In addition, this ferry terminal in Hong Kong is directly connected to the MTR which adds on to the convenience to get around.
The price of the ferries really depends on when you are travelling. If you want cheaper tickets, don’t travel on peak hours or during high season.

The set up of Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal makes travelling between Macau and Hong Kong an enjoyable experience.
Connected directly to MTR Station. There are also plenty of buses, taxi and mini vans if you do prefer other forms of transportation.
I never travel during high season or peak hours so there was never line up for anything even passing through Immigration was so fast and efficient.
Maybe one day I can try the Helicopter ride from here to Macau!

After arriving in Hong Kong and checking into my hotel, I turned right around and headed off to the ferry terminal to catch a ferry to Macau.
Don’t forget to bring your passport, because while Macau is technically part of China (like Hong Kong), it’s an independent entity (like Hong Kong) and requires a passport to go to and from.
This terminal doesn’t have the most efficient layout, but it works. Go to the counter to buy your ticket, then down stairs to the departure gate. Ticket prices vary based on the time and are higher once it get’s dark. Be aware tickets are for specific departure times, so if also you buy a return ticket, you must be at the terminal in Macau and ready at that specific time.
MONEY SAVING TIP: Once you are in Macau, nearly every casino has complimentary shuttle buses to and from the ferry terminal. Take advantage of this, I did!
OVERALL: The best way to get from Hong Kong to Macau and back.

The ferry terminal is located in Sheung Wan on top of the MTR Sheung Wan Station. So it is very convenient to get to.
However, it is a zoo. I took the Turbo Jet to Macau via here, there were tons of mainland Chinese tourists, and some of them does not behave that civilised.
Most of the ferry company specify your check in time, you need to go there as directed, then queue up or go to the counter at the appropriate gate to get your seat allocated. Then when it is closer to the departure time, you then queue up to get onto the boat.
I believe most ferry’s travelling time from Hong Kong to Macau is around one hour.

This terminal for the ferry from Hong Kong Central to Macao can be a bit confusing for newbies. It is a convenient and intuitive walk from IFCs and MTR. However, once one is in the mall /​building, it was a bit chaotic. The signages are good but there are just so many people and one has to take a deep breath and take a bit of time to figure exactly where everything is and the logistics of next departure, ticket counter and boarding gate.
I was a bit confused by the 2 ferry companies and decided to take the more frequent departure one «Turbojet.» However, I found out that the economy class for the time that I want was sold out. The line for the economy class was long as well. Therefore, I decided to pay twice the amount for the superior class. It was a good choice as the line for the superior class was very short and I got the time that I wanted.
I thought that I was early but soon found out that you really need at least 30 mins prior to go through the custom, immigration, and other gates. As result, I missed some of the restaurants and eateries in the terminal mall.
In any case, the experience was positive but not overwhelmingly loving it.

If you don’t have a HK ID the immigration line is crazy long and slow. Two officers for over 100 people on a Friday evening. Seriously understaffed ugh.

I only gave it a 3-​star only because of the infested lobby. Otherwise, it’s the most economical (and only) way to go to Macau. If you are really in a hurry and have deep pockets, go with the helicopter. It’s a 20 minute ride.
I prefer the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal over the China Macau Ferry Terminal in TST because they have better ferry schedule here and more convenient. It’s a direct connect to the Sheung Wan MTR station.
The ferry departs in 15-​minute increments during the day (between 6 to 2 am) and runs ²⁴⁄₇ unless it’s a typhoon #8 (thanks to the casinos). During peak travel period (i.e. CNY, first week of October, and over Christmas), the ferry departs in 5-​minute increment during certain hours. YET, with the ever increasing crowd trying to get a piece of Macau, advance ticket purchase is still advised and especially necessary if you are traveling over the weekend.

Great scenic trip to visit Macau! Macau is considered an international trip from Hong Kong so you will need your passport. Beautiful boat ride, less than an hour and very affordable! We stayed in Macau for 1 night, it was worth the trip. Great experience, fun and hassle free!

Pretty rough terminal. I guess it’s best to avoid this place at 6am — when we arrived we were literally trampled by one bus after the other, full of gamblers from the mainland — all with their matching hats and bum bags, and leaders with a microphone and speaker attached to the hip. Horrible thing to see — resembled primary school, where the teacher used to line us up in two’s and hold hands while we marched to the oval. Either way the terminal at 6am was ill kept, rubbish everywhere, deliveries showing up sitting outside bakeries etc. Pretty poor form, an ordeal at best. I’d much rather fly to Macau!

This is the ferry terminal that (obviously) goes between Hong Kong and Macau. There’s another one on the Kowloon side as well, but funny enough I’ve never tried it.
I can’t say this terminal is by-​design efficient, but it is de facto most convenient. Located in the edge of Central, I can easily walk from IFC to the terminal within 10mins. And honestly, you hardly have to bring any luggage, even if you are planning to stay overnight.
You can get tickets by queuing at the counter. Or you can «get tickets» from the one of those strangers standing around scalping tickets at a discount. First of all, they are legit. They are often travel agents or tour groups, purchase ferry tickets in bulk from the ferry company. When they have residual tickets, they resell them individually, at a discount but still be able to make money, before the ferry departs and the tickets expired.
Anyway, once you get your tickets you can get in. Custom is almost non-​existent, and thanks to the e-​Channel passing through immigration is a breeze. You can pick your seats at your gate, and most importantly, if you buy a tickets for a later time but you arrive the terminal early, you can have a designated queue to wait for the vacant seats at the immediate next ferry, and save you some time. Brilliant idea, but a lot of time doesn’t work already as there are constant stream of Mainland Chinese travelling to Macau these days. (But say if it was 2am, surely it helps a lot if you didn’t have to wait for another hour.)
If you are still not satisfied, get a «super class» ticket. Yes not first class, «super class». You’ll be served with a BBQ pork rice (which was the very tradition back in the days, and now they brought the idea back), and unlimited beverages.
If you are STILL not satisfied (you cheeky bast@rd), you can get a ticket to the HELICOPTER ride. It takes literally 15mins to fly from Hong Kong to Macau. If you think that’s somehow too expensive, you can always go for the package that include a night of hotel, one helo ride and a ferry ride. I did that and definitely worth the money.

Very organized, boarding was fast and easy. Smooth ride to Macau, did not get seasick. Try not to sit upfront as those that get «seasick» may in fact get seasick! We sat off to the side and along a window. They offered food and refreshments on board. If the time you pick is not available you can go with the time you purchase and stand in a standby line and get on earlier. Bring a pen to fill out the HK arrival form for your way back. Pay for the cheapest seat as the «upper class» or whatever they call it is not necessary. It’s a fast ride!

Turbo Ferry is the fastest most economical way of getting to from Hong Kong to Macau and this is where you board the ferry for the 45 minute ride.
Food options on the ferry are pretty limited so I would carry on snacks if you want them. First class didn’t really seem to offer much more than economy other than a tiny bit more space and the opportunity to disembark first.

This is one of 2 (maybe 3) border crossings to get to Macau which everyone visiting Hong Kong should do at least once.
But my favorite Macau border crossing because its on the Island, and also located in an area where there is a lot of good coffee shops. It’s also a 24 hour border crossing too, so you can experience a bit of the Macao nightlife before heading back to Hong Kong. It’s only a 40 minute trip. So it’s like going from Lan Kwai Fong to Tsuen Wan or Yuen Long.
Macau is under a similar administration as Hong Kong, but instead of British it is Portuguese although I haven’t really heard too much Portuguese there! Nowadays, it just feels like an extension of mainland China.
But the thing to try in Macau is the egg tarts, and the almond cookies, which is why I go (other than all those cute mainland/​taiwanese girls enticing you to go to their casino).

Easy and efficient!
I traveled from Zhuhai to Hong Kong and was impressed by how quick and simple it was to get across the straight. My first class ticket only cost $ 40 USD and it was nice that I could pay by credit card.
I only chose first class because economy was sold out, but I did appreciate being able to exit the ferry first, grab my luggage, and not get stuck in the large crowd on the deck below. The first class deck was also very roomy, comfortable, and we were served snacks throughout the quick 70 minute trip.
Upon arrival at the HK terminal, it was pretty quick getting through customs. The place is huge though, with lots of shops and restaurants, so I did have a bit of trouble actually getting outside to the taxi area. Fortunately people typically speak some amount of English, so you should be able to get help pretty easily.
Also, don’t be surprised if you have to wait in a long taxi line!

My first time riding on the Macau Ferry.
We didn’t make prior reservations for tickets because we really wanted to be flexible. When we arrived at the ticketing booth, a man came up to us offering us tickets at a lower price than what they were selling at the booth. We were a bit skeptical, but we figured it was ok. So, a couple steps away from the booth, he walks us to his smaller shop to make the transaction. So instead of the $ 200 HKD, we only paid $ 186 per ticket via credit card.
The ferry itself was better than I expected. The seats are actually comfortable — like airline economy seats. I guess I was expecting plastic chairs. LOL. You can opt for first class but it’s only a one hour ride so it wouldn’t matter. They do offer food/​snack service also! Anyway, to me, it was an enjoyable ride.
You arrive in Macau one hour later.
On our way back, we arrived at the ferry terminal at 8:00. The next ferry wasn’t until 9:45. Again, there was a young man selling tickets for a 8:30 ferry, but at a higher price. So instead of $ 200HKD, we paid $ 220HKD per ticket. We didn’t mind because we didn’t want to wait until 9:45. You’d have to pay this guy in CASH.
So we were back in Hong Kong at 9:30.
I don’t know if there is another way to get to Macau, but this ferry is the fastest, easiest, and is a comfortable way to get to Macau.
If you’ve got some time before your departure, and you’re hungry, there are many food options.
Lastly, if you’re taking the MTR to the Ferry pier in Sheung Wan, exit at Sheung Wan Station EXIT D.
