I haven’t been to Dot Cod for almost 3 years until last week. Boy, has time passed so fast? The front door seemed to have renovated, but when I was welcomed by a pair of plain, dull fire doors, the memory came back immediately.(yeah, you need to go through that pair of doors to see the reception staff.) It always felt a bit too quiet or too busy, depended on the time of the day. If it’s Wednesday after work, yeah probably overcrowded with people here for the $ 10 oysters. But other times, especially after the happy hour ends, people would probably prefer a view and a bit of breeze at Sevva. The oysters were okay back 3 years ago, but after I learned(but don’t quote me on it) from my friends that oysters in Hong Kong often imported every Thursday /Friday, I couldn’t help thinking Dot Cod, among other restaurants who run Wednesday oysters night, were trying to get rid of the not-so-fresh oysters. Ever since I hadn’t been here on Wednesday, but I still enjoyed an oyster or two on other day of the week. Staff was a bit oblivious of the orders we made, apparently couldn’t keep track of who ordered what, and almost mixed up our 2−4−1 deal. Other than that, the décor was a bit uninspiring, and again, uninteresting crowd that probably prefers quick, price-friendly happy hour drinks than a better vibe on Sevva or other places in Central(or worse, like my accountant friends, a quick drink before going back to work on the very same building).

This is also a restaurant I will never imagine myself going to for a lifetime, from the location to it’s décor, you know this is an expensive place to dine in. I am not naturally inclined to places of high expenses even if it is worth the money, especially when I’m eating alone. Nonetheless for the only time I visited this place, the difference was that it was my friend’s birthday and it would be very wrong for me not to join them. Walking down the stairs that leads to the interior of the restaurant, there were basically two type of diners in the room; they were either rich banker type of suit wearing businessmen or couples dressing up to celebrate their special days. The felt so under-dressed that day that I wish I could go back and get changed; it was almost humiliatingly to dress in t-shirts and shorts to go into restaurants as such. Back to the main point, the food and beverage. This place is famous for its seafood and oysters and I would not disagree with that. We ordered a few oysters as suggested by the waiter and they were as fresh as they can get. Oysters have to come fresh or they spoil rather quickly; Dotcod has specialize in the selection of oysters and has ensured the quality from origin to the plates of the customers. The waiters know their oysters too and it is not a bad move to ask them for recommendations. Other seafood dishes are worth trying as well; the white baits are fried to golden crispy perfection while the fisherman’s pie is a variation on the traditional shepherd’s pie but lighter and milder. I also enjoyed the foie gras and chicken liver parfait a lot; the creamy richness against the crunch of the toast makes the perfect combination, but since it is meant to be an appetizer, the portion was rather scant for a table of 6. For a restaurant with such high standards and quality, it is understandable why they charge such a price; but still, this would not be my highest priority for a place to have dinner. Well…put it this way… if I am more well off, I would definitely come to this place more often~ now you see my point?
