Danish Bakery

Danish bakery is older than at least half the Unilocal audience out there, unless Unilocal suddenly finds itself popular with baby boomers (ages 50+). A rarity in Hong Kong where stores come and go faster than boy band break ups. Go while the store still stands — the owner has declared retirement in a few years with no heir to the Danish throne.
Despite calling itself a bakery, it has been popular amongst generations of students for its fried goods, most famously it’s Deep Fried Chicken Leg (Hkd 18). The chicken here is 生炸 (raw fried), meaning it is not slightly cooked before frying to ensure thoroughness. Food safety concern? Perhaps. But insane crispness and mouthwatering juiciness? You bet!
Of course they have baked goods too, check out their egg tarts for a tea time treat, maybe with some Hong Kong style milk tea or coffee to wash it down with.
Nothing here is served with health in mind, but sometimes it is worth the guilt. And the Danish Bakery bears generations of deep fried guilty goodness, can you really disagree with that?

While my review may be tainted by enchanted tourist syndrome, this was a spot we had to visit this place multiple times for a quick snack while staying in the Causeway Bay area.
The three items me and my wife absolutely loved to come back for, especially for breakfast when we’re on the run, were the Hong Kong burger, the egg tart and their coffee (which I surprisingly loved, despite being a mid-​range coffee snob). There were other food options (fish sandwich, pork cutlet, etc), but being that I read about the burger somewhere in a blog before coming here, that’s what stuck. Also, communication was a bit of a barrier so I just stuck with what I knew I could get. About that burger: It’s horrible for your arteries. It appears to be buttered and there’s mayo and who knows what’s up with the beef content. But it was so damn good, I closed my eyes and indulged. Multiple times.
Its worth noting that there is nowhere to sit, as the Danish Bakery is a bona fide hole in the wall. But you can eat your meal on the go, or take it to an open space with a bench a block or two down.

Another place of great nostalgic values; this shop at the corner has the most un-​eye catching banner; the paints are so weathered away that the only color you see is the color of the metal that the words are made of. However, this is not a shop that attracts you by the glamor of the décor but by the smells that wafts through the air.
The scent of deep fried food is unmistakable; when you walk through Lee garden towards the South China Club sports ground, the air is filled with the aroma of deep fried goodness. You know the saying that the devil has the best tunes, fried goodies are pretty much like that, very sinful, yet very good. Crisp crisp exterior, soft, juicy, tender interior; there is rarely a cooking method that could win that. Other than fried items, the bakery also sells hot dogs that are highly praised by customers; so there are still plenty for you to choose from if you are very health conscious and could never allow deep fried items into your belly.
For a modest corner shop that stands for decades while there are still people from different generations lining up for the food fresh from the frier, you know they must have done something good.
