Suckling pig is to die for. The other meat(beef and lamb) were seasoned great but overcooked.

Catalunya rocks. Anywhere that serves awesome tapas with equally awesome sangrias to match, in my book, totally rocks. It’s elusively located in the unassuming Wanchai neighborhood otherwise known as the home lighting row(blocks and blocks of ceiling and floor lamps that deserve a review of its own), an odd location for a casual/fine dining restaurant; Hong Kong’s sky-rocketing rent is definitely to blame. But that all contributes to its exclusiveness. The décor is like how all Spanish men should be: dark, broodingly sexy, with a modern Spanish flair. Somehow it reminds me of a modernized Amigo Restaurant(all fantasies of hot spanish men just flew out of the window) Anyway, back to the food-food is very delicious, personally I think it’s better than Fofo but my husband begs to differ: personal favorites were(in no particular order): tomato capparccio: whoever managed to make this vegetarian dish taste robustly meaty is a genius. If I can make this at home we can finally be on our way to a vegan household. Served with thin crispy slices of hole-y bread this spread is da bomb. Bikini sandwich: iberico ham, black truffles and mozzarella, toasted with butter and pressed very flat for a delicate presentation. The 3 main ingredients are already the trinity of Yums. What’s not to nom? The roasted baby pig(oh, Wilbur…): served whole so you can see the sad baby face of the pig before they cut it up with a plate as a knife(and proceed to smash the plate on the floor, true Spanish style). After describing this brutal act I’m ashamed to admit that it’s really really good. The meat is so tender and the bones are still soft, top it up with the crispy skin this dish is a must-order to round up the non-filling tapas you consumed earlier during the meal. They have a pretty good wine list, cocktails are nice but nothing memorable– the sangrias are like any Spanish femme fatale: gorgeous and lethal. Which sort of made me forget I was eating Wilbur from Charlotte’s Web just moments ago(in case you didn’t get my reference just now.) Bill came. Not cheap(talking about maybe $ 1000 a head with wine) but well worth it. I hear they also have a weekend lunch, if only I can convince my in-laws to nix the country club…

Catalunya is yet another restaurant that my friends who studied in Barcelona approved of as an authentic Spanish dinning place around town. It’s located at a pretty quiet street surrounded by Tang Shiu Kin School and Wanchai School, so the streetscape is quite lusciously green from the school grounds. Though it’s technically in Wanchai, you can get there more easily from Timer Square’s side walking towards Tin Lok Lane. We like the suckling pig here very much. The flesh is so soft that it indeed melt in your mouth, whilst the skin is kept nice and crisp. You can order a Tapas size for 2, or if you have a large gang, you can order a whole pig. The waiter would cut the pig in front of the table by a plate(that’s how soft it is) and then smash the plate after it’s divided, all Spain-like, so it’s good entertainment for guests too. I’m also in love with their tomato toast(sorry forgotten the dish name in Spanish). On thinly toasted(I’m guessing it’s fried, because of how the bread was burnt) bread crust, yes all crust thinly sliced sideways as if peeling a fruit, freshly diced and seasoned tomato and tomato paste are put on top, very nice to go with red wine.(p.s. Out of curiosity we tried the pretty exotic cured Wagyu beef, but I think I’d prefer good old iberico). I particular, I’d like to mention that the original cocktails here are done quite well indeed, with a careful balance of spiciness and fruitiness that goes very well with the heavy taste of the Tapas.
