Serving up skewers of BBQ goodies — in a Chinese-Japanese style. BBQ has two locations right across from each other on Third Street. The majority of their menu consists of grilled skewers. They offer a large of meat, seafood(lobster, clams of different sorts, fish), balls(fish, beef, chikuwa, etc.), sausages(honey and black pepper, Swiss sausages, cheese sausages) and veggies(different types of mushrooms, eggplant, mini sweet potato, corn, etc.). The majority of the skewers were finished with teriyaki sauce, or something similar to that. As for all the seafood lovers out there, I think you’ll be pretty impressed with their assortment. I didn’t order any but it seems like their razor clams and the like are quite popular! In addition to their BBQ menu, they also have a smaller menu for deep fried items. This menu consists of different tempura, and other deep fried appetizers like squid tentacles, chicken cartilage, etc. Here were some of the hits: — Minced chicken cartilage(basically a long rectangular shaped chicken patty with cartilage throughout on a skewer) — Chicken cartilage skewers — Deep fried chicken cartilage(yes, I love chicken cartilage, don’t judge) — Pork neck slices(they grill the entire steak and then cut it into strips, finishing it off with shichimi powder — ugh, so good) — Okonomiyaki — Eggplant(a skewer comes with multiple slices of eggplant, sitting on a plate of soy sauce and sprinkled with bonito flakes) — Abalone mushrooms — Mini sweet potatoes(I have a soft spot for sweet potatoes so I liked them anyway, but if you’re hoping for that smokey flavour or some kind of sauce to accompany it, you’ll be disappointed cause they serve it bland) — Fish roe cakes(small round fish patties stuffed with small fish roe) Some of the okay items: — Honey and black pepper sausage(I felt like it wasn’t peppery enough and not as sweet as I would like it to be) — Beef ribs — Chicken cartilage sausage(I found the presentation to be really quirky! The sausage is essential skewered by an entire chicken thigh bone! It looked cute and cartoony and made me think of the Flinestones. Too bad the taste wasn’t as good as its looks.) And the misses: — Cheese stuffed chikuwa(okay, maybe I’m not a fan of super processed cheese, but the thick white liquid coming out of this really wasn’t appetizing) — Chinese red sausage(I was so excited for this dish because it’s impossible to find this kind of red sausage in Vancouver, but I was so let down because it completely lacked in flavour) Note: They don’t list how many pieces(of an item) is in each skewer, so you can easily order too much if you underestimate the portion of a skewer. So it’s best to ask if you’re unsure. In addition, some of the grilled items may actually not be served on a skewer, but rather as an entire dish or served in an aluminum foil pouch(like the assorted mushrooms for an example).
