Specialties

We specialize in rustic southern Italian cooking. We make our own bread, fresh pasta and gnocchi from scratch everyday. Everything else we offer, including desserts and antipastos, are also made by hand, in-​house. We are known for our Ligurian fish and seafood stew, also known as Ciopinno. We’re also known for our grilled fresh fish, calamari, shrimp and octopus. Our braised meats, Lamb Shanks, Beef Short Ribs and Osso Buco are very popular. We also slow roast duck and porchetta. Bistecca Fiorentina, a 28 ounce smoked and grilled porterhouse with aged balsamic, arugula and kale, aslo finds itself on our menu quite often. The menu changes slightly or greatly whenever we are inspired to go in a different direction.

History

Established in 1997.

Started on my own in 1997 after having a partner in another restaurant for four years. I named my restaurant NICO in honour of my nonni (grandparents) who have taught me the values and traditions of the southern Italian culture, including the love of food and hospitality. My grandfathers were both named «Nicola,» and my grandmothers were both named «Nicoletta.» So I tood the first four letters in all of their names to adorne the outside of my establishment.

I’m a graduate of George Brown Culinary College in Toronto, Ontario. I’ve worked under many Italian chefs since I started in restaurants while I was still in high school in the late eighties. My family comes from Reggio, Calabria, Italy and have always inspired my honest, simple but flavourful approach to cooking. I have been a chef and restaurant owner since 1993 when I had a partner in my first venture. I have owned Nico Ristorante on my own since 1997.
