Island View Family Restaurant

I walked in the door as the smell of fresh seafood wafted into my nostrils, I could salivate at the thought of the feast I was to partake in. I sat down at my table after a short wait and was promptly met with a server, he never told me his name and hurried me into ordering I could barely get the words diet coke out of my mouth before this guy asked again. Skip a head a few and I had ordered the lobster roll and it looked delicious the smell was sublime and the serving was precious everything was perfect in the world… Until… I bit into it the putrid taste caught my mouth and stomach almost instantly and I nearly choked. I tried to ignore it and sum it up to not having tried lobster in quite a deal of time and force it down… I got it down and ate my fries and slurped down the last of my diet coke I already felt the effects in my gut it felt like the time I went to Cuba and drank the tap water and it made me empty my bowels so often and with such fierceness that my butt felt raw and violated and the toilet bowl looked like a tarantino flick. I payed and got in my car and my gut started rotting suddenly I had the urge I had to let this baggage out I tried my hardest to hold it off but eventually it came hard and I couldn’t hold it back I for lack of a better word dookied in my pants it was pretty much liquid filth I felt disgusting and I dreaded what awaited me when I took them off. I drove home in shame and disgust got home changed and lay in the shower and cried I felt so horrible. I was evacuating from both ends for 3 days after it was the worst 3 days of my life save for my Cuba experience and to put a long story short I can’t recommend this restaurant as it made me sick as a dog but maybe I caught them on the wrong day or at the wrong time. ²⁄₁₀

I grew up in Halifax and have been going to this place for 20 years and am never disappointed! It is the best place for fresh
fish and chips!

The food was average and the service was horrible. The waitress forgot our drinks for the meal and they were so busy it was almost impossible to get her attention. You pay for your meal in the same line as the ice cream bar so my boyfriend and I had to stand in a cluster of people with no organized line for over 30 minutes just to pay for the meal! I’ve never been so tempted to walk out on a bill before. The worst part is, they were so disorganized, they wouldn’t have even noticed if we did. To top it all off, my boyfriend got sick to his stomach about an hour and a half later and attributed it to the clams he ordered. I will never go there again!

Stopped here on our way to Oak Island Resort. I was hoping to get an exceptional lobster roll experience considering the location and seafood oriented menu but was unfortunately disappointed. The roll was good but I could have made it at home, if not better. Service was just OK.

Went to Island View for a rather late supper (past 9pm). There were 9 of us, including 4 kids. I wasn’t feeling like eating deep-​fried stuff so I ordered the Lobster Club sandwich with their homemade bread. It was delicious. You can’t beat homemade bread, plus just the right amount of mayo to go with the lobster. The kids had burgers or wings. They were happy. Other adults had the famous Fish and Chip. They all had a big smile on their face afterwards. I also recommend their milk shake. It was so good that I ordered one more to go!
I’m so glad we found this family owned and run restaurant. We will be back again.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and give the Island View the big five star rating. The fish, clams and chips are all excellent and have been for years and the service is always friendly and prompt. But one item I didn’t see mentioned in the other reviews are the chocolate milkshakes, which are the best around.
If you can’t decide between fish, clams or scallops, try the combo meal, see photo. What could be better than clams, fish, fries and a great big chocolate milkshake!

Had an excellent meal with the family here. We tried the scallops & chips, clams & chips, both were well worth the price. The size of the orders were all you could eat, and I’ve been known to be a big eater. On top of all of that there was the real tasty selection of deserts. All in all a good place to sample some of Nova Scotia’s finest seafood. The resturant is on the small side, but if you have to wait for a table, it’s worth the wait. Be sure to check out the in house bakery for some yummy treats before you leave.

A trip to the South Shore is not complete without a stop at the Island View Restaurant in Gold River/​Western Shore. Most of the time this establishment is packed as there is a small eating area and a separate area for takeout orders.
I was travelling back to Halifax after a stop in Liverpool to play golf at White Point Beach when I stopped into the Island View and, true to form, the parking lot was nearly full and almost every table was taken.
We managed to get the last table in there and our waitress was friendly and attentive despite the commotion between the two areas. I ordered a crispy chicken club sandwich and french fries while my mother had the clams and chips and her boyfriend had a hot hamburger and fries.
The food arrived in 15 minutes which I thought was pretty good considering the place was packed; in addition, the amount of food you get for the price is fantastic as it is not uncommon for some customers to take some of their food outside and feed the seagulls.
I’ve never had a bad experience there and will continue to visit every time I take the 103 to Bridgewater, Lunenburg, or Liverpool.

Every time I’ve driven past, the Island View has had a busy parking lot, so while we were out for for a motorcycle ride, Darren G., his brother and I stopped here for lunch. It’s a pretty simple family restaurant type place — good varied menu, including a lobster club sandwich which I had, and an utterly uninspiring seafood chowder.
They’ve got a bakery that produced some really nice rolls and bread, including the bread I had my sandwich on — it was great stuff.
Add to the decent meal at a good price the beautiful view — get a window seat, it’s priceless.

First time at this place and what a view… Service was good and so was the food. Scallops and Fries were a very good value but the seafood chowder was mediocre. Would go back again.

It doesn’t look like much from the road, but the Island View restaurant sure does serve up some delicious food. The home-​made split pea soup was belly-​warming and the lobster club sandwich was out of this world! Definitely worth a visit if you’re on your way down the South shore of Nova Scotia!

We went back to The Island View for another outstanding order of Fish & Chips, Clams and of course one Cheese Burger.
This place was packed, we had to wait for a table, but it is worth it, trust me. It is not a huge place, but it will be the best fish you eat.
The orders are huge, the fish is fresh and the place is hopping!
The batter is like no other I have had, crisp and light.
The clams, well just about every table had an order on them. They were excellent. We were all too full to even attempt a slice of pie, usually we go for the Coconut Cream Pie.
This place is called The Green Canteen, to the locals.
Anyhow, if you are taking a trip along the South Shore, Stop here for lunch. The only thing that is missing for a five star is homemade fries, sorry.
Again, excellent!

If you are ever looking to go for a nice drive head on down here and get some fish and chips or clams. Six of us piled into this small hometown restaurant for some of what is known as the best F&C around.
Well I am going to tell you right off the bat the gravy is the BEST! as for the fish in which I had a 2 piece order was delicious. The fish was not hidden under pounds of batter. Light and crispy and I think I would have to say the best fish that I have had.
Clams are really not my thing but my parents had then and it was a huge order and they eat everyone of them and left nothing to spare.
A hamburger also graced our table and looked ok nothing really too special on that one.
Out front when you walk in there is a small ice cream stand that I think gives out the biggest ice creams that I have ever seen HUGE and great prices both hard and soft are served.
Now as well to add to the waist line there is a baked section that serves some of the best pies and goodies that as well you can call and preorder.
Stop on in when you are out for a drive you will leave with a fully belly.
One suggestion if at all possible, homemade fries would ROCK!

The Island View fills two necessary functions: it’s a great diner/​restaurant, and it houses a phenomenal bakery.
The Island View is open only from spring to fall, and yet every year the same customers keep coming back, waiting impatiently for the first opening of the year.
The bakery side produces incredible bread and rolls — call ahead so that they can save you a dozen or two, as they go fast. The squares and pies are to die for — there’s no better home-​style bakery on the South Shore. They don’t have to compete with Julien’s because the products served are in two separate target zones, with Island View catering to the down-​home crew.
If you visit Island View, try the deep-​fried hot dogs and fries. I know, it sounds horrible — but it really is some kind of amazing.
