Humboldt House Bed & Breakfast

My husband and I (a middle-​aged couple married ten years) stayed here over the 2015 Christmas Holiday. It’s a wonderful vintage rooming house in a nice neighborhood, walking accessible to everything downtown, on a quiet street, and quiet during the day and night. All the rooms are on the side of the house that faces the Academy, which is the good side. Very romantic! Very clean! There is no breakfast room downstairs. The only breakfast is delivery. Breakfast arrives every morning in a large basket delivered discretely through a space in the wall. There is no need to open the door to anyone. In fact, the only face to face contact we had with the hosts was when we arrived, and at that time we were warmly greeted and shown to our rooms. Our rooms were straightened each day after we left each day. We stayed in the only room that has a king-​sized bed (The Oriental Room). Unbeknownst to us, there is NO SHOWER in this room! This was a surprise, to say the least. There is a large-​two person jetted tub (with a hand-​held sprayer) which is exposed to the room at large, and there is a very small toilet closet in one corner. The privacy level in The Oriental is virtually nil, so if you have privacy issues I would not recommend it. But if you are a romantic couple, or a single person, it’s quite lovely and livable. The wood-​burning fireplace is also very romantic. We used it with no problems. There are about four parking spots behind the building accessible down a narrow driveway. Cons (besides the shower issue): the room could use more lighting – it was very dim at all times. I felt like I could use a flashlight! As most B&B’s do, it suffers from a little overload of clutter – we had to rearrange lots of things to get counter space and table space. The breakfast was good, but the menu should change more often. We ate the same thing three days in a row. Finally, the toilet closet is not soundproof by any means, so if you are modest, this could be an issue for you. The toilet closet could also also use a couple of hooks, or even a rack of hooks, inside for hanging clothes as you make your way to the tub, which is right outside the toilet closet door. Despite these shortcomings, we enjoyed our stay very much! But we would not choose to stay in that particular room again, as we would like a shower option in future (and more light).

Wow-​what a great place! Excellent location, great room (we stayed in the Mikado Room), and wonderful atmosphere! We had sherry in the library while choosing our restaurant in the evening and were rewarded for skipping dessert with 2 of the most amazing truffles I have ever had waiting in our room for us. Hosts were incredibly accommodating-​lots of help figuring out where to go in Victoria. Would not even consider staying somewhere else if we are ever lucky enough to return to Vancouver Island.

My husband and I spent the night here with our 1 month old baby. David was very accommodating. We stayed in the Edwards room and loved it. There was a huge jacuzzi tub for two and a fireplace. There were hand made truffles and champaign waiting for us when we got in our room. The room was vintage decorated, really nice. There was this really cool cubby where in the morning a basket of breakfast was delivered to the room. We opened the little door and there it was! Full of delicious food and coffee. We really enjoyed our stay here.

I have never been to Victoria or stayed in a B&B, so you can understand my excitement upon arrival.
This B&B did not disappoint. The food was amazing (get the Benny) the bed was super comfy and David was a lovely host.
I will be coming back for sure on my next visit.

This was me and my husband’s first time staying at a B&B. We absolutely loved this place! The rooms were super romantic and cozy. We used the fireplace and bath tub every night. It was so nice to fall asleep with the sound of the fire crackling. The breakfast was brought to our room each morning and absolutely delicious. More than enough to eat! David was warm and polite and even greeted us in the parking lot to help bring in our luggage. First class service all the way. The bottle of champagne and chocolates were a nice touch. We ordered a box of chocolates from Terrible Truffles and feasted on that over the course of our stay. Amazing chocolate! I would recommend this place to anyone considering a trip to Victoria! Perfect for a romantic getaway!

Nice B&B in a cute house, conveniently located a short walk from the ferry landing and downtown. The Gazebo Room is not as girly as it looks in the website pictures. It’s more green and garden-​like than pure pink/​white/​flowery. And outside the window are the tall trees on the edge of neighboring St. Ann’s (you can visit the chapel and the gardens), so you get a glimpse of real greenery. And the trees are just tall enough that no one can see in, even if the curtains are open. ;)
The 2-​person Jacuzzi set-​up in a recessed corner of the room is really nice. I didn’t realize until we got there that there is no stand-​up shower in this room, but the Jacuzzi tub has a Euro-​style detachable shower head.
The bed and pillows are really soft, which I’m personally not a fan of but most people would probably find it comfortable. I did enjoy the plushy down comforter though. :)
My favorite part about this B&B was the food. I was skeptical at first of how gourmet the breakfast could be when it’s delivered in a picnic basket, but it is indeed gourmet. The vanilla berry crepes were good, but the salmon and shrimp crepes were DE-​LISH. And the picnic basket is LOADED… you always get croissants and jam, excellent orange juice, tea/​coffee, and fresh fruit. I also loved how you would pick a time (between 8 – 9:30am) to have your breakfast delivered to your room (via a 2-​way dumb waiter), so you don’t have to get up super early to make awkward conversation with strangers at breakfast, and you don’t even have to throw a robe on to open the door. I liked the little touches, like the pretty fresh flowers, yummy chocolate truffles (2 for 2 people) and sparkling wine in the room upon arrival, as well as the assortment of delicious baked goods and sherry available in the library throughout the day. Take advantage!

This is where we went for our Honeymoon and oddly enough we were there when Obama won! We actually were watching the election results in a Canadian Restaurant. I remember thinking how odd it was that Canadians were so into it considering if they had elections I don’t believe American’s would care let alone watching it on TV.
As for the Humboldt House, this was the first time we’ve been to a BnB and it was a wonderful experience. The room was unique and had a lot of personality, the breakfast for two was perfect and served via a small cabinet in the hallway into the room so that maintained privacy, and the host/​owner/​chef was pleasant, helpful with local information and just plain nice.
Location was walking distance from downtown Victoria and easy to get back on the mainline.
It was a wonderful experience and one we plan on doing it again. Oh and if you do it, don’t forget to sign the guest book availiable in each room. It’s kinda neat to be able to read about other’s experience and to add to it and every entry we read was very positive.

I love B&Bs. This is the best one I’ve ever been to, especially for our romantic getaway. We never had to interact with a person, but couldn’t leave without telling the owner what an amazing stay we had.
The breakfast is gourmet, couldn’t find any better food than that in Victoria, and delivered to the room through a cupboard in the wall in a picnic basket at the exact time requested. The room has a fireplace and a large jacuzzi. You can watch the fire from the jacuzzi while sipping on complimentary champagne, sherry, or nibbling the free chocolates and confections offered there. The bed was comfortable to.
The decorations were nicer than most B&Bs. I understand I’m younger than B&Bs target market and can tolerate all the floral patterns and fake flowers in the gazebo room. The Mikado room was done very nicely in an asian style without any flowers. The library is filled with interesting books, tourist info, games, sherry, and snacks.
This was the only room available in Victoria that evening and was more than we planned on spending but we feel we got every dollars worth and are very happy with the purchase. We have already recommended Humbolt B&B to several friends & family.
