I needed a hairdresser downtown after work, and I wasn’t looking for anything fancy. Just a decent haircut for a good price, so I searched on Unilocal. The shop has moved as of Nov 2013. They are now located at 1736 Alberni Street, very close by to their old location which was at the Robson Public Market. The signage outside is Mary’s. The shop is street level, and attached to condo units, very easy to find. Nilou asked me what I wanted, and she delivered. Not many hairdressers can do my haircut(Victoria Beckham bob cut), and she told me she has been cutting hair for 16 years. She originally was from Iran, studied there, and continued her schooling at Blanche MacDonald in Vancouver. I loved how she took her time, and there was another lady in there, Farah, and both were chatting with me. We chatted about their grown up children, their lives etc… I felt like I was home. I loved my haircut in the end! Thick hair is not easy to cut, and Nilou did not cut off all my hair either. She cut just enough that I can come back in a month, not 2 weeks. Don’t expect anything too fancy, like coffee/tea, high tech equipment, TV’s etc… the salon is basic, but it’s the skill and technique I care most about. I’m not here for a spa day, just a haircut, and it only cost me $ 21! They offered me cookies at the end, I gave them both a hug, and was on my way. I will return! They closed at 6pm, but call them and they can accommodate your schedule.

SERVICE: eyebrow threading and pedicure EXPERIENCE: both were nicely done! so I read the reviews and I was a little hesitant, but I went for pedicure and my eyebrow and I am very satisfied with the result specially with the price I paid… soooo fare! for eyebrow threading, she disinfected her thread before using it which was nice. I believe their pedicure stuff were just cleaned as well… anyways here I am and two weeks after getting service from them, my pedicure still looks great and I have no problem lol ATTITUDE: very nice and helpful. You feel comfortable SALONENVIRONMENT: It is a small salon and not too high end, but you know what I hate paying so much extra for those salons that are charging up to roof cause they freaking spent so much money extra on looking good! I care about the service and being clean!

I’ve been to Soody’s Studio twice in the last year. Last year I had a bad experience at a hair salon in North Vancouver and decided to venture down Robson Street close to my workplace to find a new salon to try out. It had to be cheap though! So I walked pretty far… I ended up at the Robson Public Market thinking I was out of luck. I took a look inside and noticed a sign for Soody’s on the second floor of the market. I figured it had to be somewhat affordable and headed upstairs. With no appointment made as per my usual routine I walked into the salon and was greeted by 1 of the girls who didn’t have a customer at that moment. She took me in right away and offered me a place to put my jacket and backpack. I sat on the chair in front of the mirror and she asked me a few questions and managed to get an idea of what I wanted done to my hair. I’m pretty easy and I never request anything beyond the obvious shorter haircut. Her English didn’t seem to be all that great so I was hoping she got what I meant. When she began to cut my hair I noted that this salon was slightly different than the others and for only two reasons. 1. The scissors they use were these crazy long pointy things that made that quick metal grinding sound when you cut with them. 2. The stylists have obviously been trained because of the swift speed and stealth like movement they make with the scissors. She was definitely a Scissor Ninja… Did I mention I always get scissor cuts and hate the buzz cut? This place was looking good! The salon environment was quiet and relaxed. The other stylist working had a friend in for a haircut and they were all joking around speaking Korean. I may not have been able to understand what they were saying, but I knew when something was funny. So I started laughing with them here and there. They seemed to enjoy it but questioned if I spoke Korean. Nope… just English. So far it was a decent salon experience. My hair stylist had finished in record time and I didn’t even realize she had gotten that far. I was quite impressed with the outcome and she did all the right things in the end. Showed me the back of my head in the mirror, used the hair dryer to get rid of the hair bits, brushed off my neck, and removed the smock with ease and no hair flying everywhere. It came out to $ 18 and I left her a decent tip for the great experience. I came back a few months later but the hair stylist I had the first time wasn’t there. The other girl who was there the first time took me in even though she seemed extremely busy and did an equally good job. She was a Scissor Ninja too. I haven’t been back there in while because my office moved out of Downtown, but maybe I’ll check them out soon when I’m due for my next cut. Thank you Soody’s!
