I have been shopping here for about six months, as I feed my cats a raw meat diet and I live in Railtown. I’ve always liked how friendly the butcher is, and that they have some other basic food items that are very cheaply priced. It seems like a very nice gesture for the poorer folk in the neighborhood. However, today I saw some practices that I simply cannot look past. When I came in I took note that he was tossing pork chunks into the freezer with his bare hands, which is questionable enough, but then he proceeded to close the doors on the fridge, serve me, take my money, hand me my change, bag my items — all without washing his hands at all. He still had blood on his hands as he did all of these things. I have no vendetta or malicious intent against this place, but something this irresponsible cannot be glossed over. If you shop here, be very cautious.

Ilbeom Kwon is the butcher but you can call him Charlie, he is a really nice guy. I’ve been buying my meat here since 1999. Prices can’t be beat & service is the best. Interesting fact, this butcher was a banker in Korea.

This Japantown staple is amazing! Another fresh butcher, with the whole meats in the locker and the grinder around the corner. The butchers are very helpful and can get you just about any cut of any meat you’re looking for. But they wouldn’t be called payless if they weren’t discount. Because they get their meat wholesale and prepare it in store, they can offer the cheapest rates I have EVER seen. $ 3/lb for extra lean ground beef, $ 4/lb for single sliced bacon, and super cheap steaks. That, along with an almost limitless selection of pre-cooked food like bulk sausages or perogies! Their other food fare is comprehensive and competitive. Eggs, bread, butter, margarine, all at super market prices but sold with more smiles. And before you leave, don’t forget to pick up a pepperoni stick for only a quarter!
