My brother and I decided to try this restaurant. It’s «ogenki ramen», so both him and I ordered ramen. He got the genki ramen and I got the shoyu ramen and we were both incredibly underwhelmed. The broth is extremely watered down and tastes just like noodle water. So I definitely do not recommend ordering ramen at all. I ordered gomae in the side and it was the opposite of the ramen. It was really sense and had me reaching for the tea to hydrate myself after every bite. Not the most soothing appetizer. However, they did get the sushi right… As well they should, a sushi place cannot keep in business without nailing the sushi. In conclusion, ogenki isn’t a place for anything else but sushi

I was here in the late afternoon on a weekend since Trilussa was closed and I wanted a snack. Seeing a ramen place, I was interested since it was also pretty cold outside. Stepping in, I took their special ramen, hoping that it would be a great bowl of ramen since it was their house dish and that it had to be higher quality than other things. However, my first tastes did not lead me to a good experience. The broth was VERY watery. The chashu that came it was just pork with no special flavoring — in fact, I had no idea if it was roasted or not, it just had a cooked texture but no evidence of any special flame treatment, be it a burn mark or at least a savory aroma or taste. Their egg included was also disappointing, because it was soft-boiled but the yolk didn’t run nearly as much as others(like Sanpachi’s tasty egg, for instance). The noodles were very good though — firm but a bit overcooked so they soaked up broth well(they claimed they were homemade which i believe), and the vegetables were not overcooked either. The meal came with some genmaicha, which I found very nice. However, that didn’t really add much to the experience, which was not that cheap either, at $ 10 for the ramen. The bowl was large I guess, but the taste overall was disappointing. It’s a bit biased of me but anytime I don’t hear Japanese at a ramen place I get concerned. In this case, they spoke fluent Cantonese and it kind of lived up to my expectation. So I hate to say that I’m still batting pretty accurately with this bias.

As the original sushi joint on Main st, this place still tops many of the local establishments. Sushi and rolls are fresh, balanced; no overloading of rice here and no msg infused rice either. Never had a bad meal here and their take out, delivery has always been good. The last reviewer rated this place poorly; couldnt find the entrance… wtf?!! Perhaps he needs an eye examination? Sheese!!!

First off, my friend and I couldn’t find the entrance because the first door we saw had an upside down sign that pointed to the grocery store next door… When we found the right place, we didn’t know that the sushi and ramen place were connected and the same. Everything was so confusing. ANYWAY, we heard that the sushi wasn’t so good here so we came here specifically for the ramen. I ordered the«Genki ramen» and my friend ordered«Taro Ramen». Genki ramen had fried chicken, chashu, corn, black fungi strips, grated ginger, boiled greens, and some nori. Oh, and half a COLD soft boiled egg. Not impressed. The soup base tasted like something you could mix up yourself with instant powders. Taro ramen had the boiled veggies and ‘fatty chashu’. The pictures were deceiving, because the meat came in big chunks, and it looked like it came from a Chinese fast food place and dropped into the ramen bowl. I guess the meat was fatty; that was pretty much all we saw — the fat. It didn’t look too appetizing. Along with the ramen bowl, we had an order of gyoza. I personally am not a fan of gyoza, but this one was actually ok, in the sense that it wasn’t too soggy when served. I think for ramen, I will stick to Santouka or Kintaro.

Did I just have crappy sushi in a Ramen place? Or horrible Ramen in a sushi restaurant? Both were quite unpleasant. Soggy sushi rice and weak Ramen. Me thinks not!

Just opened a month ago. We decided that we needed to try this place out. Afterall, it’s been a month and figured they should have all the kinks worked out by now. Ogenki Sushi has been around for years now, and if that is a good indicator then this place should be just as good, maybe even better. However, after my time here, I’m not so sure. The picture of the chef didn’t really match the chef that was in the kitchen this night. Being a Friday night, I thought the chef would be making the noodles and soupls, but it was a different kitchen crew tonight I guess. The waitress spoke Japanese and the food was ordered. Tomadachi and I were wondering what the food would be like. We brought with us a coupon for a free gyoza with your order or Ramen. The food came. First the gyoza. It looked nice, but there was no flavour and it looked like it was deep fried on one side. Probably the pan was too hot. It could have been the style that it was made as well, but regardless, the filling was pasty and not very much inside. Then again, it was free with the coupon. Gyoza 2 stars. I had the Miso ramen. wanted to try the basic flavour and ordered it with the spinach noodles for $ 1.50 extra. The noodles were more in line with the consistency of Pasta. It didn’t have that chewy texture that Ramen noodles are famous for. It looked like it was made from a pasta maker. I think that if they turned it a few more times in the machine, the noodles would have accomplished that chewy texture. Then again, it could have been the style that it was made. Both the regular noodles and the spinach noodles had the same texture. The biggest issue for both of our soups was that it wasn’t hot. It was just warm and with the cold toppings like the char siu and the vegetables, it made the soup luke warm. For ramen the soup must be hot! We both ordered extra Aji Tama. Aji tama: 5 stars!!! Soup: 1 star, Ramen noodles: 3 stars(fresh every day). Soup: overall: 2 stars. And with all those Ramen shops out there. this was one of the few that seemed to lack energy. I didn’t taste it, didn’t feel it. When you go into a ramen shop, you feel that energy and the spirit which goes into the product. A sense of pride. Tonight, I didn’t feel that. I dont’ mean to me a harsh judge, but when you serve ramen, you must have hot broth and good noodles. It seemed like they were just cashing in on the ramen craze and if they did, they have to know that there is alot of competition that people would be willing to drive to get to. Make the soup hotter and better gyoza and you’ve got a solid 4 stars.
