The Sweet Potato

I’ve lived in the neighbourhood for a number of years and shopped here frequently. I basically spend a lot on good organic groceries. You can get good deals on produce (greens in particular — in season) but man oh man, do they hike the prices for groceries. Why shop here when I can get the same organic product at No Frills around the corner for 1.25 less or more? Baby products in particular. I mentioned this to them in store. If you don’t ‘one stop shop’ or if you can make it to Kensington Market, Essence of Life has good deals on organic grocery, if you’re avoiding big box stores.
(Side note: the staff is friendly and overall helpful)

Sometimes I love coming to this store just to go. You can smell the fresh veggies and fruit and I swear I learn about new products every time I go here. My love for hemp hearts came from this place!
Yes, it is more on the expensive side but worth it when it comes to some of your food sensitivities and/​or can afford to splurge a little. Also, if you follow their website or visit every once in a while they do have specials. Just last week they were selling Chocolate Almond Milk, 5 for $ 10.
I have purchased Amy’s soups from here and they were delicious! The veggies are always fresh and there are a variety of health bars you can choose from.
The staff are actually very friendly in a cute way!

One of the best mini-​supermarkets in Toronto. Great selection of vegan and specialty products, awesome prices and frequent sales on organic berries, fruit, veggies. etc
I can’t say enough good things about this business and I love their staff.

The Last Straw (or maybe not!)
Thoroughly editing/​slashing a bad review shared here because it was based on bad information. Everything that happened, happened at Qi on Roncesvalles. My mother swears she said Qi, I swear she said SP. One friend said to leave it because SP deserves a bad review, but I cannot in good conscience share what is undeserved from my own experiences.
I still think Sweet Potato is overpriced; I still had a bad kombucha experience; but I love their soups and because of my stupid listening skills, I have changed the rating to a 3 star experience.
I am a huge supporter of everything Junction, and do hope SP succeeds, if only they could offer more measured and competitive prices.

My favourite grocery store in the city! Excellent staff, great product selection, competitive prices on most packaged speciality goods and sales well worth checking out. Since moving to the east end of the city this is definitely what I miss most about living in the West End. ¹¹⁄₁₀ for you Sweet Potato!

I usually happy with store selection is great, staff is friendly and they are proudly organic.
Except today… I was REALLY REALLY upset when I read «organic seedless watermelon»
It’s paradox, seedless watermelon is genetically modified organism or GMO.
I was curious about so I asked how can it be both. I was told that «it was grown that way»
I’m calling BULLSH*T. I assure you all no way of growing it will ever get the seeds out!!! Not cool Sweet Potato, not cool.

After a year of living in this neighbourhood I’m upgrading the review to 5 stars.
Steps away from the conventional no frills in Pacific you get the best of both worlds. I love coming in here to find a more cozier and friendly way to shop with much more diversity than No Frills.
Produce is expensive but when they have sales they are much worth it. Keep an eye out by joining their email list.
Organic milk and other dairy is very comparable and sometimes even cheaper. There is limited meats.
Also they don’t carry Rowe farm eggs (in my opinion one of the more affordable alternatives).
Cashiers are always super friendly and will out in extra effort if you ask.

I was happy with the size and selection of this store and the prices weren’t bad. I would have liked a better meat selection, but given the size of the store, it was acceptable. The store was a little crowded which made navigating the aisles a bit of a challenge but I guess that just says they are doing something right to draw in the crowds.

This has become such a staple for me. Some weeks I’ll go to The Sweet Potato everyday, sometimes to pick up some groceries, other times just for a bag of sweet potato chips.
It still surprises me just how much stuff they have, from candy, to treats, to nuts and teas to veggies, fruits and meats.
It’s been open for a few years now and it’s still fun for me to visit and look at all the different items they stock. Some things are not on my diet, but many of them are interesting. Their front stall outside of the shop does a good job of tempting me to pick up extra goods too, which I don’t mind.
The staff are typically pretty friendly, they might have a few hipster cashiers which can smile more and have more of a friendly tone, but most of them are fine.
They’ve done a ton of renovations in the last little while and it’s help the store. It’s not as crowded anymore, plus the cash register is no longer such a bottleneck.

The Sweet Potato is an organic grocery store that functions like an ordinary, albeit small no-​nonsense grocery store. If you are committed to organic shopping, The Sweet Potato has most everything you would need. If you just need to pick up some delicious produce, fresh coffee, or some salty snacks, you can do that too.
While the prices may be a bit high, they actually seem reasonable for an organic market. Here are a few other things I really like about The Sweet Potato…
1. A great variety of local cheese and dairy options.
2. A huge selection of coffee and tea.
3. Super fresh produce.
AND THE BIG ONE…
No snobiness at all. None of this, «we are better than everyone, including our customers» attitude.
In fact, someone usually asks me if they can help me. If they don’t know, they ask someone else. While I don’t always shop here, I have always had kind and friendly service. More places in Toronto could take lessons from The Sweet Potato.

My new favorite grocery store! Great product at reasonable prices. The place is too small though :(

best health food store in the city, and yes i am finally willing to admit that its better than EOL. what is so wonderful about this store is that it is well organized, well stocked, nicely designed and with all that the prices are still really good .
we have basically bought all of our groceries from here for the past 2 years, occasionally augmented by no frills when i just have to have some hellmans mayo. they have a really great selection of pretty much everything you might be looking for, as well as stuff you might not expect to find like the organic parmesan reggiano they carry (so good). the produce section is what really puts them ahead of EOL, and they have so much organic stuff that is usually hard to find (like endive, green beans, blood oranges, etc)
the produce staff seem a bit surly at times but thats well balanced out by the supremely friendly cashiers — a sign of a very smart hiring policy imo !
it is currently taking them forever to switch around their fridges and shelving, but so far i am liking most of the changes so the confusion seems to be worth it .
love this place, and will be so so sad to leave it when we move out of the junction … hoping that they open another location thats a bit more central in the future !

This is a pretty decent grocery store. GREAT selection of produce that isn’t crammed onto only one shelf, properly laid out, lots of stock, good space to walk around in the aisles and lots to choose from in terms of organic foods.
The beauty section leaves something to be desired but then again, if you want beauty stuff, go to Kensington Market or Whole Foods.
They have a good range of other sauces, tofus, and basically anything you can imagine. I find the prices quite decent too, for organic things.

Wish it was larger, but this is a great grocery store. The only place I buy my produce and snacks. Great place for Organics.

I love it here. I have noticed that their vegetable broth is cheaper than Metro. I usually buy my toothpaste, bar soap, ice cream cones (which are really yummy!), pasta, cheddar bunnies, bunny fruit snacks, kimchi and other items here. Not bad for the price. Organic coconut milk is 2 for $ 5. They also sell organic chocolate hazelnut spread, yum! and marshmellows too! The staff are really friendly and helpful. I just love coming here.

The Sweet Potato and I — we have a good thing goin’. Two or three times a week, our worlds collide; just the perfect amount to keep our relationship fresh ‘n relevant. You know, much like their GLORIOUS SELECTION OF PRODUCE.
I’m a fervent supporter of farmers markets, but in this work-​a-​day world it is slightly difficult to manage a consistent market schedule (if they are not in your immediate vicinity). Lucky for ME (and also you), The Sweet Potato keeps a rainbow supply of bright, local plant edibles. They’re priced to please, and just as farmer fresh as your mom.
They stock mostly anything else a gal could need — nutritional yeast, hemp seeds, maca powder — you know, all that typical woman stuff.
Many items are actually cheaper at Essence of Life, but due to my High Park transplant and EoL’s earlier closing time, convenience wins. Also The Sweet Potato is cash registered by the sweetest of gals!
They’re open til 8pm (or 9pm, later in the week), which is wonderful for us folk who work til 7ish.

I admit I’m an unrepentant hippie who gets most of my produce at farmers’ markets and has panic attacks when forced to patronise the local Price Chopper. But Toronto has winter, and even the most committed locavore needs vitamin C (not to mention shampoo.) So I was delighted to find The Sweet Potato on a stretch of Dundas dominated by pawn shops and storefront churches until the neighbourhood had the good sense to lift the liquor prohibition imposed in 1904.
The Sweet Potato is a small grocery store, not a health food store. This is part of what makes it so successful, as many health food stores are so packed with vitamins, smoothie mixes, and remedies of dubious effectiveness that they have no room for actual food. Not so with The Sweet Potato. There is an excellent selection of produce, dairy, cereal, grains, legumes, and baking products as well as small sections of personal care products, meat, and prepared food. I’m especially happy that I can get sheep’s yogurt and milk here, as only a handful of places carry them.
The prices here are very reasonable for organic and natural food. The house-​roasted coffee is excellent, and comes in a variety of blends. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the hours are convenient. There have been a few times that they’ve been out of something I’m looking for, which isn’t unusual when dealing with smaller suppliers. On the other hand, they usually have at least a few things on sale (Nature’s Path Cereal for $ 1.99 and sheep’s milk for $ 3.69 last time I was there). The surrounding neighbourhood is a haven of independent businesses selling natural and local food as well as the work of local artisans. No more Price Chopper at the Galleria Mall for me — I’m hopping on my bike for the 5
minute ride to The Sweet Potato.

Fresh! Natural! Organic! And… cheap? Say wha? It’s true. No more $ 8 tomatoes.
The Sweet Potato is a natural grocery store with no insane mark-​ups. It’s not a health food store trying to sell you magic potions or a café designed for single-​sittings, it’s a real grocery store… selling real (organic) food, from fresh fruit and veg to soups, diapers, tofu, organic deli meat, cereal, juice, baked goods, etc.
All that plus a take-​away counter at the front offering smoothies, wraps, coffee, tea (plus a little comfy space to enjoy it) The Sweet Potato is the best place to buy your groceries if you live in the Junction… and maybe even worth the trip if you don’t.
