Great butcher shop. Super friendly and staff, selection and quality of meats is superb.

Every time I make a bone broth I come here for beef bones and they give me the most beautiful bones !
However today I called to have my boyfriend pick up an order. I requested 5 bones cut up to fill the bottom of the pot. When I got home there was way more than needed … When I called saying there must have been a mix up, what would I do will all these bones? His response was «what do you want me to do about it your boyfriend should have known»… Well no he doesn’t know that’s why I called ahead… I usually spend ten dollars on the whole soup … Well this time it was an expensive (but turned out to be delicious) broth!

Best butcher in the Junction. I came in for stewing beef for Irish stew and the butcher (?) behind the counter said with a grin, «…so you have the Guinness?» I really enjoy liquor-​based conversations so naturally we hit it off. Of course I have the Guinness! The beef was so blood red it was almost purple and made for the best stew of all time.
They lost a star because a different guy at the cash told me cancerous material could be seeping into my skin via the receipt I was holding. There’s no need for that. I just came in for some gourmeats, man.

Their selection and quality of meats, alone, would be astonishing enough to earn 5 stars. The variety of gourmet sides, marinades, and other goodies could easily earn those 5 stars. However, what earned it the most, for me, was their care and customer service.
I went in there looking for an unparalleled treat for my husband, who is a lovely fellow deserving of such luxuries, when I can afford them.
I told the gentleman running the shop, who I assume is the owner, and he fell right in to helping me delight and amaze my beloved. He showed me all his varieties of meats, asked what I had in mind, and even invited me in the back to show me MORE amazing goods! Once I’d selected something, he helped me understand what I’d chosen and gave me the best instructions on how to cook it, and personally cut my meat to a size fit for the king my husband is.
He gave wonderful advice on what sorts of sides to add, and as an extra-​special treat, did something very nice I won’t mention so people don’t come to expect this sort of thing unreasonably. I just wanted to mention his extra bit of kindness.
His lovely lady assistant, whom I know little about, was funny, friendly, and endlessly helpful as well as they both bantered almost lovingly to their customers, sharing kindness with adults and children alike.
Even if all they sold were bricks and no mortar, I’d buy a house-​worth just for their friendly service, alone!
I tell you, even if you live on the opposite side of the city, as I do, they are worth the patronage!
Get thee to Gourmeats and get thee the most delicious, healthy, cruelty-​free meat and goodies and most wonderous service!
And if the sir who served me reads this, my husband was amazed and overjoyed with my gift to him and we cooked it EXACTLY as you suggested. It was PERFECT!

This is my first review on Unilocal.I was very surprised to read David W’s 1 Star rating of Gourmeats. I’m not here to say his review was unfair because he is just sharing his experiences; I just want to share my experience with Gourmeats.
I’m a huge meat eater and recently I’ve decided to break away from the grocery store meat counter and go the free range/​organic/​hormone free/​grass fed route. I used to go to St. Lawrence Market but a few weeks ago discovered Gourmeats down the street from me in the Junction. I knew exactly what I wanted: 2 free range chickens and 2 lbs. of grass fed ground beef. They had just what I needed and the shop owner answered all my questions. He told me where the meat was from, how its raised, etc. He is clearly proud of his business and the meat is fresh and delicious. I go there every week and will continue to go back. Gourmeats has everything I need, including free range hen eggs, and if they don’t have it, they will bring it in for you within a day or two (like the 2 ducks I ordered today).
Gourmeats isn’t fancy and their display of meats isn’t as eye-​catching and artistic as you would see in Whole Foods, but it is fresh, organic, hormone free and most of all, delicious! If you’re expecting these prices to be on par or even slightly more expensive than your typical grocery store, you’ll be in for a surprise. Comparatively, Gourmeats is on the pricey side but eating heathy, poision free meat is well worth it. This place is just what this neighbourhood needed!

Bought meat from here a couple of times (steak, ground beef for meatballs, short ribs…). Wanted to like this place as it is right beside the farmers market. Disappointed every time. Most recent debacle were the expensive short ribs. Tough, un-​chewable, with extra bone shanks that will keep us out of this store forever. It may be the only junction area meat place currently which is unfortunate. Try heading elsewhere for better quality at the same price.

Gourmeats has only been around for four months, but it looks and feels like it is exactly where it should be and always has been. The large wall at the front of the store lists a dizzying (in an exciting foodie kind of way) number of free marinades that come with each meat purchase. The display cases proudly showcase beautiful whole fish and large pieces of assorted natural meat (including lamb, rabbit, beef, chicken, pork, and sausages) that can be cut to order.
After drooling over all of the future possibilities, I admitted to the extremely friendly couple (?) that I didn’t see the ham hocks I was looking for. Excitedly, the woman immediately went to the back and emerged with a bin of fresh ones for my picking. At the mention of making split pea soup from scratch, both their eyes took on a sparkle in the way that only seriously passionate cooks get. The man then brought out a piece of smoked pork rind and heartily suggested that I use it to bring out a whole new depth to my soup — which it did.
Shopping at Gourmeats was such a pleasant experience that I cannot wait to return regularly and make them my go-​to butcher from now on.

Dropped into Gourmeats after a visit to the Junction Farmer’s Market on Saturday as it was right next door. We wanted to pick up something for dinner and eyed their selection. We went with a few of their organic sausages — double garlic and spicy.
Three sausages came out to just under $ 10. After we fired them up on the BBQ, I found them a bit dry and kinda salty.
Will try them again for our meaty needs.

Super nifty – choose your protein and then one of sixteen complimentary marinades (all made in house) and they’ll vac-​pack ‘em together. Seriously, the chicken was the best I’ve had in, like, forever. I had half of the chicken in a tandoori marinade and the other marinated in a Chipotle-​Mexican sauce. So succulent and juicy and the perfect level of spice. You can also get a lot of the meat cut to your specifications, which is pretty neat.
