Greenwood Park

This review is specifically for the ice rink at Greenwood Park.
The facilities have been upgraded drastically and look nice, proper, and clean.
The leisure skating trail is really nice and provides a nice little loop with a few alcove spots where you can skate around along with some benches on the side that you could take a break. It is really a big hit with the local community after the run-​down rink that it replaced. They even have 4 – 5 of those green walkers for those kids that are just learning Canada’s national wintertime activity.
The hockey rink adjacent to the skating trail is always popular with a schedule for different age groups and classes that happen almost every day and night so please consult the schedule beforehand.
The place even has their own zamboni so you can bet that they will make sure the ice remains more than skate-​able throughout the day.
It is just a pleasure to spend an afternoons skating with some friends here.

This review is specifically for wintertime fun.
I had heard that Greenwood Park had a skating path, and not just your typical ice rink so we decided to check it out. I’m glad we did!
To start, they have a great inside area/​changerooms to put your skates on. Really warm, benches, nice bathrooms with the rubber mats so you don’t have to ruin your blades. The skating path was a great change from the normal ice rinks we usually visit. Just a bit more interesting with some nice straightaways to pick up some speed by not having to be turning constantly.
Right next to the skating path was a nice big sized shinny rink with boards and glass and really well lit.
I want to come back and skate here a few more times during the winter. It’s artificial ice so it’s still open on the milder days.

The whole park sounds great but it isn’t. Like everything else in our part of town, it’s meant to be a good thing but never quite meets standards you find in other parts of the city. Can’t we do anything well? There’s only one word for Greenwood Park — shoddy. Not a place I’d like to picnic.
And, If you want yourself and your dog to get stinky & dirty this is the off-​leash dog park for you. What is that smell? The dog walkers bring a string of dogs, sometimes amounting to a surge of 15 dogs into an already busy area. Some let the dogs off their leashes, but not others, creating tripping risks for man and beast. After all, it’s a leash free park folks. And, stop giving the neighbourhood dog owners dirty looks when their dogs want to join the crowd. (Don’t you just hate it when dogs act like dogs?!) Get over yourselves, you’re dog walkers not animal behaviourists.
Most of the one dog owners seem pleasant ‘though. And some great dogs too which is nice since that’s what the dog park is for.
Looking for another leash free park,

I used to bring my dog here because it has an off-​leash fenced in area but after one to many encounters with people that bring their «dog aggressive» dogs to this park I’ve stopped going. There are a few dog walkers who use this park that are not really attentive to what their dogs are up to, i.e., pick up after the dog.
However, if you want to catch a baseball game during the spring/​summer it’s a great park and easy to get to. A new covered ice rink just opened which is great to go ice skating.

Despite the impressive size, this park, is a bit of a dud.
On paper Greenwood Park sounds great: large grassy grounds, a dog park, a baseball field, a play structure, a pool and splash pad, an artificial rink, and now it’s even housing a little community garden. Clearly the space allocated to this park was not wasted, I mean, it’s all there.
The park is very run down and in need of serious renovations. There aren’t even solid cement paths to walk on to make rainy days at the park more enjoyable. And this is not the place to go at night.
Overall, if convenience is an overriding factor, then this is your place; although Greenwood Park has the calibre to be an amazing park, it’s really not the lovely public oasis expected of such a place.

This is not my favourite park. We come here sometimes because there is an enclosed dog park. However it’s frequented by the neighbourhood dog walkers and many larger dogs. My dogs don’t love it here despite it’s conveniences. I had heard that some dogs were getting sick from the pebbles or something in the dog park, but that situation seems to have been rectified… so I keep trying, hoping that they’ll like it better, but they don’t.

Greenwood park is a wide, open park with almost no trees. There’s a dog park, a baseball diamond, a swimming pool, two refrigerated ice rinks and a splash pad and playground for children. There’s a hill on two sides, and one of the two sides is well-​suited for winter sledding.
It’s not a treed, scenic park, it’s just a decent place to go and play. It does a fine job of that. Monarch Park and Withrow to the Northeast and Northwest are both nicer places to hang out and read, but Greenwood Park has its moments.

Sunday afternoon… Don’t expect Greenwood Park would be a nice place to chill. have a nap underneath the shade or read a book?
All I heard was people cheering, ball hitting against baseball bats… If you into watching «action» then it would have been the park to be.
There is an fenced off lease area for dogs, but the whole hour I was there, I only saw 2 dogs…
One good or bad thing about the park is there are not kids playground… good for me? bad for the kids and families?
