The Suya Spot

Sometimes when it is delivery night you need a break from the ordinary. The other night I was browsing the menus looking for something to order and between the Pizza and the Chinese I found the Suya spot. I remember having seen their shop when it was on Wellington and never had a chance to try it, so now I had to have some Suya, whatever that was.
As it turns out Suya is West African BBQ and boy is it tasty. I love simple food, traditional foods, no need for a million flavours and complicated textures when you can have grilled meat on a stick, stick optional. I ordered 3 options to get a sample, chicken, beef, and goat. I had never had goat to my recollection so I absolutely had to have some and it is really interesting. Quite gamey and a bit tough but man is it flavourful. The chicken had a great collection of spices while the beef was nice and charcoaly. Personally my favourite was the beef while my girlfriend preferred the chicken, which is not to say the goat was bad, it’s just that the beef and chicken were amazing. Each option comes with grilled onions, but it’s all about the meat (and the spices).
One word of warning, each dish comes with some sort of spice powder in the corner and if you are sensitive to spice you need to handle with care. That powder is very hot, tasty but small doses only. Apart from that, if you are looking for something out of the ordinary (and are not vegetarian) then the Suya spot is a great little find. Simple and tasty.

I heard about this place from a lot of friends and finally went… a few months ago. Yes I know this review is long overdue!
Anyways the restaurant is at/​around the Somerset to Mechanicsville bend. Go down Somerset towards Hintonburg and it’s right before the bend.
We came in late at night and they had beef, goat and some other meats. When I saw those 2, the other meats were instantly drown out and my blockers came on as I had to try those 2 with a side of plantains. As we ordered the guy working the counter told us that the sides might be slightly different than what we’re used to getting at other places and asked if we’d like to try them which we said sure.
Our order of grilled goat and beef came with a side of plaintains. Now the other side they was a bit of a surprise. They were raw onions and raw tomatoes. I’ve had these raw vegetables before obviously but never had it as a side to a grilled dish. It’s like a salad… missing a lot of items. I’ll be honest, I didn’t finish my raw onions.
The grilled meats were decent. I liked the goat more than the beef and finished that goat off pretty quickly. The plantains were pretty delicious. I’m not sure if I’d come back regularly just based on the sides but if I have a goat craving I’d probably come back if I couldn’t make it out to Bananas in Orleans!
The staff were super friendly.
