Salty’s

I had supper this evening at Salty’s. I had a view of Halifax Harbour and watched the ferries go back and forth between Halifax and Dartmouth.
I ordered Breaded Haddock (minus the veggies). It was delicious! I don’t like greasy battered fish and the breading on this was light and crunchy. I’d get it again.
Dylan was my server. He was friendly and professional.

Downstairs. Food was decent. Had breaded scallops. Done pretty good — had better. They were a ok portion size. Salad was boring and fair. Bacon wrapped scallops were chewy. Service was good. Noisy.

This place is classy and nice but we were not impressed with the food at all! Me and my friend both got the special of the day which was a halibut dish for 40 $ and it was tasteless !

Great location with a great view. Spectacular spot for a relaxing meal!

Crab cakes — nice crab flakes, fluffy interior, crispy exterior, seasoned nicely, palm size, 2 per order, comes with tangy tartar sauce
Lobster roll — fantastic, everything you expect!
Steamed mussels — 3 different flavours during different visits, love this dish
Salmon — really fresh, good cook
Lobster — steamed, alive before served, doesn’t get any better than this, served with butter, corn, slaw
Cesar salad topped with shrimp skewer — meal size, generous portion, nice fresh dressing
Vino paired perfectly — suggestions from wait staff
Price — mid range for waterfront restaurant
Convenience — close to several hotels and conference centres

The name obviously yells seafood. Their calamari is the best in metro. Excellent views of Halifax harbour and the Dartmouth coastline. (It’s chilly in the winter sitting by the windows so wear a sweater) staff are excellent and service top notch.

This restaurant is a true 2-​in-​1 experience, with its upstairs fine dining and downstairs casual. I’ve eaten at both, but prefer the upstairs, as I generally rather fine dining any day. Wherever you sit, you are basically guaranteed a great view of the harbour, as the restaurant runs along the boardwalk and has windows galore, and I would guess a capacity of maybe 60 or 70 on each level. The casual patio holds dozens as well.
My most recent visit to the upstairs was on a sunny, cool October Thursday, right at 5pm as it was opening. My partner and myself were the first to arrive and remained that way for a few minutes at least, so was kind of nice having the place to ourselves. Within the next 90 minutes, only a few more people arrived, so guess it’s not their busy night… that or it was just too early in the evening. The Caesar salad (8.99) was quite good, nothing overly memorable, but tasty for sure. We were an oddball couple coming to a seafood restaurant and not ordering any seafood, so maybe you’d want to stop reading my review here if you are on the hunt for good seafood in the city. lol I’m a vegetarian, so knew in advance I’d be ordering the Five Mushroom Fettuccine (24.99. Cremini, Forest, Portabella, Porcini, Button, sriracha, olive oil) was very good with nice flavor. To me, that is quite expensive for pasta, especially pasta with no meat or seafood. Also, the portion size wasn’t giant like you often get, but perfect to satisfy. My partner had the Certified Black Angus Striploin 8oz (Priced Daily. Red onion demi-​glaze) which he said was good, cooked well, but didn’t blow him away for the $ 35 we think it was, if we remember correctly. For dessert, we split a lemon crème brûlée, which was a good size and just the right amount of lemon tartness mixed with sweet. Service was friendly and prompt.
In the summer, we sat on the patio for some drinks and I enjoyed the Cashew Black Bean Burger (12.95. home made burger made with black beans, rice, mashed potato, peppers, onions, cashews, and curry powder, with all the toppings; served with fries), which had a nice curry flavor, was a soft patty).
So since I’ve tried both of the vegetarian options in this restaurant, I won’t be rushing back anytime soon (I prefer to always try new menu items every time I eat out), but I do recommend it for others. And if someone else wants to pay for me to have that fettuccine upstairs again, I’d go in a second. :)

I’m not sure of the appeal here. I have had a few experiences here and they continue to be disappointing ones. Portions are crazy small. When I say small, I mean maybe 15 individual fries. Insane. The fish is always super tiny as well. And the appetizers can be tasty, but stupid small. Prices are unreal for what you get. And again, like other waterfront restaurants, the staff don’t seem to care.

Wonderful ! Being next to the water and eating sea food is the best. Between the smell of marine air and the taste of great sea food, you cannot not have a good time. Paired with a glass of white wine, the experience is bound to be pleasant and delicious. I recommend!

Food wasn’t too bad. I had the seafood casserole and it was good but not great. The food was fresh so that was good. The patio outside on the harbour front was amazing. Lovely to dine out on a beautiful day.

Salty’s is right on the waterfront, so it offers great harbor views. Alas, if only the food was as appealing. Not that it’s bad; it isn’t. But we expected a little better from a seafood restaurant on the Halifax harbor, particularly given some of the Unilocal reviews. But we try to be honest, and honestly our experience here wasn’t first-​rate. Let’s start with the good: the bartender made the best dirty martini we had on our long Canadian trip, and when we asked for extra olives, he added 5!!! Impressive. Our waiter had a dignified but not uncheerful demeanor. And did I mention we liked the view (even though it was a typically foggy late afternoon)? We sampled a group of appetizers rather than a main course; the mussels were small but tasty, the seafood chowder had lots of meat chunks with a slightly smoky taste, not unpleasant but hardly memorable, the smoked salmon wasn’t very appealing, though the Caesar salad was a winner and the crab cakes had minimal filling. Like we said, not bad, but not really good either. We ate upstairs in the more formal dining area; downstairs there’s a more casual menu for the bar and grill. Maybe that’s where we should have wound up.

On a really hot Saturday my best friend and I were heading back from the beach and looking for some food. More specifically, sea food. So naturally, as soon as we decided seafood we had our hearts set on it. We parked downtown and walked into the first seafood restaurant we found. We ordered the calamari to start. She got the scallop platter, and I had the one piece fish and chips. The service was good, the food was great, but we paid waterfront tourist prices, which sucked. You can’t really mess up deep frying a piece of fish. So I’m not crazy about paying a lot of money for it. It basically taste the same no matter where you get it. I tired one of her scallops though, they were really great! They were very lightly battered and deep fried, not pan fried like I’m used to. The calamari was pretty alright too, I liked it more this second time around (I’ve been to Salty’s before). I would recommend the scallops and calamari.

A pound and a pint with a view of the Bluenose II in the sunshine. It does not get any better. Some of the best mussels we have ever had! This is not a restaurant to miss in this beautiful town.

My colleague said the oysters were standouts in a week of oyster eating.
Service was speedy and pleasant. Prices were a little on the steep side but the food quality matched the price.

This is a beautiful restaurant right on the waterfront. I ate a lobster for dinner, sitting outside on the patio, overlooking the gorgeous blue waters. The lobster was delicious. :)

Sometimes there are times in which you want to take photos of your meal cause it was so awesome but you can’t as you don’t want to be seen as the ultimate geek because it’s an important business dinner.
We came here for a big business dinner function with 21 people. Speaking with Lucas before and Patti on the evening we had discussed the menu to make it easier for our guests. They were friendly polite, sincere and helpful. Thank you we appreciated the excellent service and attention given to our group by the staff at Salty’s.
For the food I decided to go with the Seafood chowder which is one of the best I’ve had in my life here. It’s filled with fresh shrimp, scallops and haddock. Really fresh and perfect!
For my main I decided to go with the Scallops (done with a curry sweet spicy sauce with jasmine rice). This was a lighter dish but amazingly really good sweet but spicy. Very nice with the rice to balance out the flavours!
For dessert they had their signature chocolate mousse cake with a bit of a crunch. Solid!
Salty’s still is a great place to come with a group as they know how to serve you to make sure everyone is in good spirits. I wouldn’t hesitate to make the decision to bring another group here again! A+ food and service!

Great little spot on the harbour in Halifax. This is your typical tourist spot. Food was good, but pricey.
I liked the view, the food was average and the price was a bit high.
You won’t go wrong checking this place out on your first day in Halifax, if it’s near your hotel, but don’t go out of your way to find it. There are places that serve better food and a better value. However, it’s a great spot to hang out for a beer and check out the view — that’s the real reason to check this place out.

I had a whole lobster, ‘slaw, potato salad and a split of cava on a deck on a dock on the Halifax harbour. Think about that.
I grew up in Halifax proper, and my family didn’t spend nearly enough time eating lobster on docks in downtown Halifax. Though I guess it’s like living in Toronto and going up the CN Tower on the regular? Who knows! But if you’re a Haligonian I urge you: do this more!

First night I arrived I was treated to an incredible lobster dinner at Salty’s. I had the lobster bisque which was a little disappointing because it had a layer of skin on top of it that made me think it was sitting on the pass for too long. And then there was the Coquille St Anne which was a delicious mixture of scallops and lobster in a cheesy sauce with rice as a base to soak up the buttery cheesy flavourful sauce. That definitely made up for the skin on the bisque.
The second night a few days later, I had to throw a party. I searched high and low for a restaurant that could accommodate 12 at short notice. The restaurant for that was Salty’s and they gave us a table by the picture window that showcased the waterfront. It was a fantastic evening. And we closed up the restaurant. All 12 people enjoyed their meals and some even ordered dessert.
Two really great points of service, when ordering the four seafood entrée, I mentioned I wasn’t a huge fan of salmon and they offered to substitute for extra scallops or shrimp. And when deciding to split a dessert, the waiter brought out the two desserts on separate plates in half portions. It’s these little details that make a restaurant experience special, and Salty’s certainly knows how to make an evening special.
