Montes is Dartmouth’s little secret. As a live music venue, there no bar in Atlantic Canada that can rival it’s sound. Saturday matinees with Wayne Nicholson and the Eastenders combine great talent and irrelevant humour for a great afternoon of music and fun. Montes has a small kitchen and a pretty standard menu of pub fare, but the food is good. If you enjoy live music shows, Montes is where to go to hear bands at their best — without leaving with your ears bleeding.

Great band Saturday with Terry Edmunds band with Bruce Dixon and Al Resk at the matinée. Great atmosphere. One of the few places in Nova Scotia that doesn’t drive the crowd away with loud music in between sets. Actually the music and videos played was complimentary to what the band was playing. Great crowd enjoying the day. Nice atmosphere.

My lone experience with Monte’s involves slot machines and the Northern Pikes. Needless to say, these things combined to serve up a great experience. We rolled in fairly early to get a solid spot to see the Pikes perform(For those of you not up on your late 80’s can-con. The Northern Pikes sang«She Ain’t Pretty, She Just Looks That Way») and to grab a bite. Monte’s prides itself on good, cheap meals for the«Tough Economic Times» and I must say we get exactly that. The food was tasty and cheap and I would go back again for it. What surprised me most about this place was the quality of their show equipment. When The Northern Pikes took the stage the music was very well mixed and very professional. I assumed I’d be seeing a rinky dink production, but am happy to report it was absolutely top notch. Both the band and the staff should be proud. Also, I won twenty dollars playing the slots, so, all in all, this was a great night and a great overall experience at Monte’s! I will definitely be back.

I popped into Monte’s Bar and Grill this past Wednesday. This is the sort of pub that serves as a neighbourhood haunt, with cheap beer and eats at the ready. I ordered wings($ 3 for 10) — nice steal and a diet pepsi. Wings came out looking better than I expected although left me feeling kinda gross. Perhaps just a grease overload? Nice stop off in this area of Dartmouth where there aren’t necessarily a ton of other options.
