Lion’s Head Tavern & Grill

First time here (on a holiday) so it was quiet and could actually hear myself talking to the people I was with — they mentioned how it is normally very noisy and crowded because it’s so popular! For pub food, I was really impressed by the veggie options. I’m not a major salad fan when I can have something different, and the teriyaki stir fry definitely hit the spot (although I took some bites of the Greek salad and that was amazing too).
Overall great space!

Here is a 2015 Review (this place has been improving every year so don’t look at old reviews):
Beer is pricier than most local establishments but they do have a good beer selection.
Food is great. Have tried a lot on the menu and enjoyed them all. My favorite is Shepherd’s Pie and the poutines.
Olé’s favorite: Big Ben. He just tried Hot Turkey sandwich and gave it 2 thumbs up!
And burgers are good too.
Don’t get sweet potato fries unless you like sweet potatoes with cinnamon and sugar on them. I just saw tonight they offer a dessert with those — SPF with caramel sauce.
Karaōke with Laurie the Guy is the best. Call ahead to see that he’s hosting if that’s why you are going.

I have to say the Lion“s Head has really got me interested again. We were going to go downtown for a pub experience but life changed that and Dr appt got moved to North End, not the South End so… we ended at the Lion’s Head. I have to say it’s greatly improved since the last few times I tried over a few years. We had the Mussels, Bangers & Mash, and I had the People’s Poutine with Chef’s suggestion of adding bacon and green onions… it was amazing! The gravy was perfect as with the curds and fries. I have to say I think it was the People’s Poutine (I still cannot find a menu or decent site online for these guys which is frustrating). I’d give them another try for sure.

I love Karaōke and any place that has it at least 2 nights a week has my vote. The food is also very good, I’ve had the fish and chips, the burgers and even a pasta dish and I was very impressed.
The place is normally packed once karaōke has been going for about an hour, but if you get there early enough, you can grab a great seat, have a good meal and then have a few drinks with friends.
I unfortunately haven’t had a chance to try out their patio, but it’s HUGE! You can clearly see its size driving down Young street.
I’ve also heard amazing things about their brunch on the weekends.
Definitely not a place you want to take your family if they are visiting Halifax for the first time, because it’s a pub like many others around the world, but it is definitely a local favorite… Might I say a local Staple…
No I want to go have a few and sing Paradise by the Dashboard Lights… Sigh…

I’d really give this place a 2.5. My first ever visit was last night because my partner and I had planned on trying Mother’s Pizza, but they were full and we didn’t feel like waiting around. I know people that go to the Lion’s Head regularly and envisioned it pretty much exactly what it turned out to be. A semi-​large basic bar, broken into three sections (‘bar’ side on the right when you come in with dart boards, couple of TVs, maybe a dozen tables), then the dining area to your left, divided in half by a partial wall. Although there are several windows, it’s overall low lighting but not warm lighting. Maybe 30 standard wooden tables & booths, various country flags hanging from the ceiling, typical wall décor, a kareoke stage in the far corner (which was full of boxes).
My potato skins were fine (not overcooked as I have experienced lately), and definitely filling, served with sour cream as per normal. I don’t see an actual menu online anywhere to double check the price. My partner had the fish & chips and said they were fine as well. Frozen fries, two filets, nothing memorable in a good or bad way.
Service was quite friendly and our server made sure to get us another round of beers before the first was empty.
I’d go back here if someone asked me to, but never choose it on my own. Mainly it’s because they don’t have much for vegetarian options (which I am), and there’s nothing in the atmosphere to draw me (which sometimes restaurants will do, regardless of their menus). Overall I give it a so-​so.

Pros
1.) Food is better, than before… I order the Big Ben every time, its slow cooked beef that falls apart on top a grilled cheeses on French bread, smothered in a beautiful gravy. With a ton of hand cut fries on the side & coleslaw, around $ 10.00.
2.) Its always going to be the Lions Head, the atmosphere is special there, always was, no matter who owns it.
Cons
1.) The old staff is gone, so they lost a bit of the hospitality there.
2.) They changed the wings, but my son will still order them.
All around a good spot to have some drinks, or bring the kids for a bite to eat. We will be back.

Nobody gettin’ a tip today! Okay, so we sat down & it’s our first time here, so we scout a comfortable spot. We waited… & waited… & waited… Watched servers pass on into the distance… Until finally! She arrived to stop & take our drink order. It was also a Tuesday so it was cheap wing night. Her name was Sarah apparently, idk. I asked for lemon with my water & this is what she said «don’t most places offer it with lemon?» In the most snarky voice. The stupid remarks went on throughout the orders around the table. My father asks, «do you have Thousand Island salad dressing?» & she replies, «I have what I said.»
Everything sucked except for the chicken wings! So if Ur feeling up to eatin’ some yummy chicken wings in a great deal, here’s the place.
