The most eclectic mix of music and spoken word radio in town. You’ll rarely hear the same song more than once in a day. This is a station to tune in to to hear local indie bands that you might not have otherwise found out about. Show themes are quite unique and the vast majority are locally produced originals, though a few valuable ones are brought in via syndication, such as Democracy Now! It is a ‘college’ radio station, but about half of it’s volunteers are not students — myself included. There are also a few paid employees in key positions making sure everything runs smoothly.
They do run ads– but they’re produced in-​house and most are hilarious and quite inoffensive. The majority of their funding comes from donations during their ‘Fun Drive’ held in October… during Fun Drive, many events are held around town, which indeed makes it quite fun, and there is a lot of swag available for various donor levels. A minimum $ 30 donation (unless that changes at some point) gets you a ‘Friends of CJSR’ card that will get you some pretty decent discounts around town. Most of the shows typically give away extra prizes during this time as well.
Volunteering at CJSR is a fun way to meet new people, peruse new music, learn some new skills, and help out a valuable community resource. I highly recommend popping on to their website for more information on their shows, volunteering, or to listen to a live stream.

Great place to volunteer! They are always in need of some help. This is a truly independent radio station run by people like you and I. Anyone can work at the radio station, you can even work on getting your own show! They have equipment and support, mentors and veterans who can help you learn anything you want about radio.
I want to learn how to write ads for radio, record them and edit them. I want to learn how the gear is all setup, how to record a session when an artist comes in and how to be a DJ. All of this is available to me, all DJs are volunteers and pretty passionate about being there at all hours. They contribute in many ways, and are approachable and helpful.

Best radio station ever. Been listening ever since I attended which is long long long ago. Love the mix and the low budget collegiate feel. Want to listen to something fresh? Just tune in and find your next favourite artist or hear that obscure song that you haven’t heard forever.

No commercials.
Unique programs.
No creepy loud stereotyped DJs and no silly billboards around town.
Independent radio — what’s not to like?
Something for everyone, funded by the public. A dying breed amongst radio stations? I hope not, but even CBC radio 2 has ads and plays the same pop tripe as every other station.

This use to be my favorite station when I was in high school in the 90’s but as I got older things have changed. I don’t like the track selection much for some of the shows I used to love, though I still tune in. I only listen to the radio when driving for work and it isn’t that often but this station and CKUA are the only two I like. The DJ’s at CJSR are all nice and knowledgeable about their particular genre of music so I have no problem there. I like that they’re playing more experimental musak too. Kudos!

One thing I can’t stand is hearing the same songs over and over and over again during my daily commute, and CJSR is the cure for what ails me. I usually listen between 7−8am and 4−6pm, and I’ve grown attached to several of the shows and DJs. Thanks to some of the morning programs, I’ve discovered a lot of music that I love that I probably wouldn’t have heard otherwise. The hosts have distinct personalities and styles and I love them all in all of their quirkiness.
There’s such a variety of shows, too. There’s tons of Canadian content and they play tons of local Edmontonian bands. There are punk shows, feminist shows, a local events listing show, spoken word shows, news shows, a science show, and shows in many different languages. I once caught a broadcast of the Ukrainian show and heard a few pretty sweet tunes! There are minimal commercials, and the ones that are played are for cool local businesses or upcoming shows.
If you donate a minimum of $ 30 during their annual Fun Drive, you get a sweet Star Card that gives you discounts to many awesome local businesses. The higher you go with your donation, the sweeter the swag gets.

I don’t listen to the radio too much, but CJSR is one of my go-​to stations when it’s radio time. It’s definitely the most eclectic station in town… you won’t hear most of this stuff on other stations in town, and what you hear varies depending on when you tune in.

This station is a lot better than I was expecting. I’m never too fond of student-​run radio stations in Canada, but this one has me impressed. A lot of the DJs have put me on some great, non-​mainstream music and I owe them my thanks.
I don’t always get it all the way down in Southeast Edmonton, but I get it while driving closer to downtown.

CJSR FM88 is a radio station at the U of A. It is a good student station and feature a lot of non-​mainstream music. I usually tune into this station when I want to hear something new and different.
A lot of the music played displays unique styles and sounds so it is a perfect station when you are sick of the usual top 40 stuff that gets played all day long on other stations.

CJSR is the radio station at the University of Alberta. Like any good student station (although not everyone who works or volunteers there is a student) it is filled with alternative news and music. A lot of the music falls far from the mainstream and includes punk, rock, world beat, and the eclectic assortment of sounds that fall under the category of «alternative.» You can also hear news broadcasts from the BBC, progressive speakers, and a local program called Rise Up which reports on the activist scene here. I contribute every year to the annual FunDrive and go to the office to pick up my swag. It’s a really fun place. Last year I was in one of their studios to record a commercial for an event an organization I am with what organizing. The people there are very creative. They are also always looking for volunteers.
