After a walk with our dogs at the North 40 on a sunny Sunday afternoon, my friend I stopped in to sample some cranberry wine. There was only one customer being served & it looked like a gift wrap was nearing completion. After 5 minutes of browsing the proprietor asked if we had been there before & I replied yes, but it had been awhile. She then asked if we were interested in a wine sampling & I advised my friend was interested in some cranberry. The other customer proceeded to asked me if that was the best wine to which I relied that I wasn’t sure. I thought they were finishing up but they contined to chat & whisper to each other & after another 10 minutes of waiting as the store has limited products to hold your interest for that long, we both just left. Strange customer service. We go to the North 40 often to walk our dogs and will continue to give Wellbrook Winery a big pass.

After a short day of finding very little that suited our wine palates, we were on a small road going toward Ladner, somehow we stumbled on this one prior to closing. To say we weren’t expecting much was putting it losely, it was one last one for the day. This one is a little hidden, on a small road, where you roll in, and have to go behind the heritage farm and park your car in front of the small storefront. Coming to this plot of land reminds you of a time that once was, where things were simple, from the age of the building around, weathering has taken it’s course, giving this property a rustic look. Going into the store the one thing you notice is this is just not a regular winery, as Bremner’s juice also operates out of here and is harvested on the farm lands. This is not your regular grape wine’s, but that of other fruits, so be warned, this may not be your cup, we didn’t think it was ours, but was surprised by the tastes that we were about to have. The wine tasting is complimentary, and we went through quite a few on this day, from the many berry varieties they offered, they were good, but nothing seemed to get our attention, except at the end where we tried a raspberry fortified wine. This thing had a deep raspberry taste, and as the lady serving us said… it would go great with some dark chocolate. The question marks were going in my partners mind of ‘if we should buy it’, well we left with the bottle in the end. The lady there also gave us some suggestions on other places to try if we ever decide to travel this wine area again by providing us a map and some advice. Great place to come in, try the different variety of wines, maybe shop for the Bremner juice or other things they sell here. They also sell jams, jellies and chocolates here as well.

After a long day of drive-around in Langley with no luck finding decent wine, my partner and I came across Wellbrook Winery. This is the only place we saw that actually opens till 6pm. It’s 5: 20pm when we saw the signage. Sure, why not? How bad can it get? We drove into the«parking lot», more like a really big lot. We saw a wooden cabin-looking storefront with a red light of «open» sign still on. We walked in and was greeted by Tracy. This place sells more than just wines. They sell locally made chocolates, balsamic vinegars, seasonings, napkins, little things that’ll make your wine party merrier. Instead of going through the list of available wines for sampling, I asked Tracy what she likes. Now keep in mind this is not your typical grape variety you are tasting. You are tasting blueberry, raspberry, cranberry, white cranberry etc. There are the regular table wines and then there are the fortified wines. We started off with the tables ones and they’re alright, but once you get started with the fortified wines, party is on. Both cranberry and raspberry are nice. Cranberry reminds me of Christmas. There’s something warming about that wine that you just want to curl up beside your loved ones in front of a fireplace. Raspberry, on the other hand, is seductive. It’s sweet but the flavor of the raspberry is just so deep and sensual. Forget about sex, I think I am good with a bottle of this chilled baby and a bar of really good dark chocolate. No mess to clean up afterwards — bonus! I highly recommend checking this place out if you like to venture outside of the typical grape wines. Tracy will take care of you, if not, her husband, the paramedic will.

We went to this place as part of a wine tour not long ago. I drink a lot of(grape) wine, and it’s a refreshing departure to taste something as unique as an artfully crafted fruit wine. Yes, the wines aren’t bone dry, but they’re not cloyingly sweet, either. The blueberry reserve was just fantastic — you’d be hard pressed to tell it wasn’t grape wine, and I really wish I could have bought more. The tasting room itself it very rustic and quaint… there’s a big barn outside and llamas in the yard, which makes it fun, too. The staff are friendly and helpful — if you’re in the area, definitely check it out!

If you are looking for your regular grape wine, this is not the place for you. If you are interested in trying a Blackberry Port, Blueberry Red or Apple Cran White, then check out this little gem. The first time I stumbled onto this place I was pleasantly surprised. The store is country kitsh but oh so cute. You will not only find some of the best fruit wine in the Lower Mainland, you will find some of the best fruit vinegars and jams from local farms. If you are like me and enjoy wine but get a headache from the red ones, try a blueberry red, slightly chilled. I am a big fan of Pinot Gris but hate the hangover in the morning or the feeling of being drunk after 2 glasses. Try the Apple Cran white. I was able to have a few glasses and not feel like I had drank the bottle. Not everyone is a fan of the fruit wine and here they are open with the wine tasting. Give then a taste. The prices are great and the wine is even better.

Small, friendly, cute. Lots of fruit wines. I actually didn’t see or taste any… grape/regular wines, which is weird to me. But as I said… super friendly sommelier. Lots of little kitschy stuff around, including glasses, stemware, knickknacks, and such as well as jams, jellies, chocolates…
