Service: nice and quick Food: Ok Price: inexpensive The food was ok but it wasn’t great. The server was nice and we didn’t have to wait too long for our food. It wasn’t very expensive neither. I don’t think I will return to the restaurant. Not because it is a bad restaurant, but I have similar/better quality sushi restaurants near my home(I prefer not to travel far :) FYI, the restaurant was very busy even though it was close to closing time. So I’m guessing lots of people really like their Food.

Its an ok option for sushi if you’re in the area. I’ve been here twice now once for dinner and the other for lunch. Definitely prefer dinner menu though lunch was a lot cheaper, quality wasn’t the greatest. Both times I came in it was busy. Place is nice clean, workers are friendly and attentive. Overall it was ok.

Awful, just awful, one of the worst sushi locally. We ordered in our meals so I can’t comment on the«eat-in» part of the deal. But we had to throw away(seriously) our miso soup because it was too salty. The rest was just so-so, a lot of it got left in the fridge for the next day and then thrown away. Very disappointing. Avoid.

Yuck Quality has severely gone downhill here, today me and my boyfriend both had bad stomach issues from their lunch bento box sushi which included Tuna and one sockeye salmon nigiri(we paid extra for it). My daughter had ramen and was fine. My boyfriend and I however were in the bathroom for the rest of the afternoon and had to skip dinner. Not full blown food poisoning but definitely gastrointestinal distress. Called and complained at a very unresponsive manager who actually said possibly the combination of eating hot and cold food caused the problem !!! wTF!!! And small restaurants wonder why people flock to chain restaurants, especially in the burbs. !!! At least they have very high quality control and take every step to ensure customer satisfaction. Grrrr.

Kid friendly and good service. Prices are on the higher side and they seem to be heavy on the mayo in some of their rolls. I’d order from here again, but it wouldn’t be my first choice.

I have never set food inside this place but this is one of my options when it comes to taking out sushi in this area of Coquitlam. Therefore my review would probably lean more towards for take-out service. Matoi sushi is very prompt and are always able to fulfill phone orders during weekday dining time and weekends. Whenever I pick up my order it always looks busy inside. Taste-wise, I would say that their sashimi falls within typical sushi restaurant grade that exists all over Metro Vancouver. This place is Korean owned so it wouldn’t be authentic but then again most sushi restaurants in Vancouver are like that. The sashimi cuts are pretty thick and their rolls are decently filled. The wasabi is great tasting and are generously given. Props to using Kimlan Soy Sauce packets! My favourite. The only thing is that sometimes they seem to only(sometimes forget) put enough soy sauce packets. This also applies to chopsticks, though it doesnt bother me much as I have my own chopsticks at home. It just feels like this establishment tries to save as much resources as they can. Overall I am satisfied with this place and would keep continuing ordering take-out sushi along with other sushi joints that I prefer in the area.

Definitely NOT your normal sushi restaurant. Authentic Japanese food with Korean & Japanese chefs with fresh ingredients. Love the Oyako-Don and Agedashi Tofu! Definitely the best Japanese Place in Coquitlam & Fraser Valley.

Never had such a sloooooooooooooooooow service. 5 times«I’ll be right back» and never comes. One of our guest never got the food ordered even after everyone else was done! People! Hire more staff or don’t pretend you can have that many seats Food is good though.

Originally 3.5 stars. I bumped it up to 4 stars when we got our bill. You’ll see why. I’m a sushi lover, and this place was recommended to me by coworkers. The area it’s in(near Coquitlam Centre) is about a 20 minute drive away from my place, so it’s a little out of the way. But nevertheless, I’m also open to trying new sushi joints. The restaurant layout is quite lovely — dark brown floors and tables, little private booths/tables you can sit in(with no shoes. you know what I’m talking about?) and cute soy sauce dishes. But this is about the food! Me & my boyfriend ordered the usual: dynamite roll, california roll, tuna and salmon maki, toro nigiri(aburi style) and tempura. These are our«basics» to determine if we like the sushi place or not. If they can’t get the basics right, no point in trying anything else. We also ordered a smoke salmon roll. Tempura — okay, wow. The assorted tempura was great. Instead of the usual veggies and 1 – 2 prawn, we got veggies, couple of fried white fish, 2 prawns, and one huge full sized one, head attached and all. Definitely impressed here. Dynamite roll: nothing out of this world, but the prawn inside tasted fresh. I liked that it had brussel sprouts in it as well. Not TOO much rice, but just enough to hold everything together. Good sizes. California roll: pretty regular. I liked how it wasn’t too mayo-y. Tuna and Salmon maki; the salmon was fresh, definitely. Tuna was alright. I almost wanted to order a ½ order of salmon sashimi, but they don’t do half orders here. Whomp whomp. Smoked salmon roll: same as above. Fresh and good portion sizes. Toro nigiri(aburi style): Now this is where the disappointment was. I order toro nigiri on the regular, and this time it wasn’t as fatty or as buttery and I’m used to. I’ve had aburi style toro in other places, and the way they did it here didn’t do it for me. However, the servers forgot ¾ rolls :(We ordered first, and a few tables walked in, and they got their food before ours. The servers/chefs were able to whip up the rolls quickly, but we were disappointed in that. Hence my 3.5 stars. I made up my mind on this, until the bill came. For all of that, it was around $ 40. Pretty good pricing! But it wasn’t that that bumped up my rating… Instead of the usual mints or candies, they gave us a Pocky packet! Um, WIN! Perfect little dessert to end our meal. So Matoi, you get 4 stars overall. Would I come back? It wouldn’t be my first choice, considering I have 2 sushi places near my house. But if I was in the area, yeah, we’d go back!

Very good service, the servers are polite, catering, and the food is so quick. Though, nothing compares to the quality and taste that Nagano Coquitlam has.

Worst sushi, even the prawn tempura was bad. Which I don’t know how you can go wrong buy they do here. So bland and stale. &SOPRICY! For bad quality, portions and service. My prawn still had its whole shell on under the tempura batter, they didn’t replace it or take it off my bill. 4pc for 8.95? Wow never coming back. Seriously don’t recommend this place.

A decent Japanese restaurant that makes the effort. Food style is genuine, produce are fresh and well prepared. It’s solid and very fairly priced. Service is too, from the heart.

These other reviews most be from family and friends because this place really was a big disappointment. The staff are no good and food portions are to small. Also the food it self is not the best. One of the worst sushi place I’ve been to. It really makes me not trust #Yelp any more when this place was ranked number in Coquitlam.

Service is not that good but the food is delicious and worth its value. I recommend trying the grilled fish lunch specials. They come with miso soup, salad, and a side dish. The black cod/gindara/sablefish is my favourite. It is amazing — melts in your mouth, has a buttery taste, and is just superb!

Matoi, what a hidden gem in Coquitlam. Real Japanese chefs, with horrendous service(ok, maybe it was just that one time). It’s like a price to pay to eat good sushi, to sit through endless waits, unapologetic waitresses when they make mistakes, and to wait some more. Actually we’ve been back a few times since, and it really isn’t that terrible. Matoi is quickly growing to be one of my go-to Japanese restaurants in Coquitlam, Tri-Cities, especially when Shyun my prior favorite has gone significantly downhill with double sliced warm sashimi and 35 min wait for a simple negitoro roll(No Thank You!) My love for Matoi doesn’t stop at fresh sashimi at reasonable prices. It extends to their wide range of robata and cooked food selection of grilled Atka fish to salmon bellies to gyu tongues to ponzu mirugai. I have to admit the space is rather tight inside and often there isn’t room on a Friday night, but if you learn to make rsvp and/or go earlier, you’re bound not to suffer too long. Toro and Hamachi Sashimi: The toro has a melting butter meets fatty acid type of love thang. And the Hamachi is tight and springy that doesn’t suffer from freezer burns. Negitoro Roll: Simple toro and green onions rolls into a gentle maki. Grill Sockeye Salmon Belly: Generously charred skin and a moist, juicy center. The portions for regular salmon are bigger than the ones for sockeye salmon. Zaru Soba Ten: Dog days of summer calls for something chilled. These cold noodles were perfect; perfect in texture(al dente); perfect in temperature. Size plate of tempura consisting for two prawns and your seasonal greens. The soba noodle dipping sauce was evenly distributed between soy sauce and mirin(rice wine). Deep Fried Sole: Flash fried and crispy enough to eat the bones. Some dipping sauce is provided on the side. Tobiko and Quail Egg: Egg on egg action with popping flying fish roe and a creamy yolk. Ponzu Mirugai: Thinly sliced geoduck mixed with seaweed, cucumbers and a ponzu vinaigrette. Refreshing. Simply not enough. Gyu Tongue: Grilled beef tongue sprinkled with some sea salt. It was tender, juicy and soft. Sesame and Green Tea Ice Cream: comes with wafers.

It’s been 2 months since my visit to Matoi and I’m still thinking about it. That’s how amazing their lunch bento box was and I’ve yet to put my finger on one place who does a bento so well for such a darn great price. Authentic Japanese. That’s something I rarely find in California and it makes all the difference in the world… the flavors have subtle differences you just can’t find in a Korean run Japanese joint(I frequent those quite a bit and have no offense against them). I opted for the bento combo which had the chicken teriyaki and sashimi. Because we had just hiked, and hence a little dirty for two girls to lunch in public, we did take out. About $ 12 per person and 15 minutes later we unpacked our meals. I was shocked at how much there was for the price. Did they accidentally pack up someone else’s alongside ours? Nope. We had salad, rice, a huge assortment of tempura, chicken teriyaki, the chef’s special appetizer(fried tofu) and then the sashimi. The two combos were honestly enough food for a family of four. Great quality, especially the sashimi. Cut a little larger then I’m used to(but I ‘ain’t complaining), it was perfectly fresh. The chicken teriyaki had just the right amount of white and dark meat and just enough sauce. Great tempura and though not my thing, my sister raved about the fried tofu. We ate it at her Japanese style table(she used to live in Japan), drank some green tea and chatted for what seemed like hours over our food. It was a nice afternoon and will probably make for a nice memory. The food definitely had something to do with it. Though not for lack of trying, we ended up with enough leftovers for her to enjoy on her evening work shift. Bottom line: I’m in love with lunch Matoi. I hope it doesn’t break my heart next time I’m in town.
