Offering a expansive collection of wines from all around the world as well as unique spirits and beers that will tantalize your palate.

The Cellar– A wine store on another level. While it is almost impossible to try every wine before buying them, we have done the work ahead of time to make it a little easier on you. We have researched each one of the wines on our shelves and ensured that it reaches a certain level of quality. And if we couldn’t find a rating, we tried the wine ourselves to make sure that it is a product we can stand behind and affirm its merit.

History

Established in 2001.

Located in the basement of the historic Alberta Hotel the space was once a barbershop, billiard room and bathrooms. It has been converted into a wine cellar that looks like a wine cellar. This place offers a unique purchasing experience and a huge selection of wines and unique beverages.

From what I saw the Cellar has an amazing selection of wine in a beautifully laid out setting. However, I want to really compliment the outstanding customer service!
I walked into the cellar just to browse and see if there was anything that caught my eye. I spotted a South African Chenin Blanc that looked like it was worth a try, but when I went to grab a bottle another bottle of wine fell and shattered on the floor. I felt so terrible! The sweet lady that worked there rushed over and said it was no problem at all. I apologized profusely and offered to pay for it but she said I didn’t have to. She was so understanding and I didn’t get a sense of anyone in the store being even a little annoyed. I paid my bill and left like it never happened.
So thanks to the staff at the Cellar for not letting me feel like a complete klutz and being so kind when I destroyed a bottle of good wine.
If you like wine, give the Cellar a try because of the wonderful people that work there!

Good selection of wine. Some harder to find bottles from California. Prices are reasonable but the wine selection is higher end so don’t look for a bottle less than 20 bucks.

Nice selection of wines but don’t expect much attention or assistance from the staff. The wine selection seems to be largely over-priced, which is not altogether unexpected from a downtown wine retailer. I don’t buy wine here unless I have no other choice, there are other boutique stores in Calgary that provide more value for your money.
Went in today and bought a $ 65 bottle of Merlot and asked about a specific label I was interested in that I had bought there before. I was told by the manager (presumably) that he brings it in for a couple of his restaurants and will occasionally split an order with the store. I prodded a little more hoping that he may realize I was looking to bring in a case for myself but instead got «Is this all for you?»… OK, I guess it is then.
The staff are generally task oriented and don’t ask customers if they need assistance. The most you can hope for is a «Hi» on your way in before they return to their conversations while they are wrapping bottles etc.
The location is great, really convenient for shoppers leaving for home or a party after work. Lots of floor space and it’s got a nice cozy feel. Too bad about the staff :/

Its an expensive wine shop. I didn’t see one bottle under $ 20, though I did see some cheapies that were wayy overpriced here. That’s okay. I still got a bottle of syrah and enjoyed it in the hotel room. I really liked the décor from entering the building to descending the steps to the «cellar.» Finally, there is a shop that lives up to the name like cellar.

Whenever I’m in Calgary – and it’s not as much as it should be – I wet my whistle at The Cellar.
They have a good selection of wines from around the world. I was impressed by the Washington state selection – as a big fan of that viticultural area I’m hugely disappointed in what’s available in many parts of the USA.
A number of wine regions have sprouted up in Canada, and like the larger neighbor to the south, some of those places – but certainly not all – have been successful. And you can try a pretty broad sampling here.
Canada has world class dessert wines, particularly icewines, by such luminaries as Inniskillin from the Niagara area. And at The Cellar you can find the increasingly successful reds from the Okanagan valley. The foray into Pinot Noir has been successful, though I do think they are a bit overpriced for comparable quality in other areas.
The big stunner to me was that the Syrahs coming out of Canada are quite tasty – a surprise simply because heavier reds haven’t been successfully in Upstate NY. (If you’d like to debate that last point, message me with a successful Finger Lakes red and I’ll try it on the next visit there.)
A good shop with a good location and good wine.

We were in there for a tasting event tonight… it was lovely. The room is off to the side of their store and the lady working walked us through a six-wine tasting. All the walls are stone and there was a long table that seated 20 in the middle.
We were provided with the tasting notes & pencils which help. She was very knowledgeable about the regions, the winemakers and was good at asking our group about what we thought and liked. The food was good, the only thing that could have been better was connecting the tasting to the food on the table. Overall, it would be a great place to hold a meeting or dinner event.

Great selection on different kinds of wine. I liked the décor too, pretty neat idea.
The staff was… well actually I didn’t see any staff! No one came up to ask me for assistance which is fine because I knew which world area I wanted!
Overall The Cellar had a great selection of whites from Chile which is my favorite! I’ll go back for sure.

I love it here. Everyone I have asked about this joint has never been here. Even home-grown Calgarians! What a shame! I know, parking can be a «B» but downtown is downtown. If you happen to be down there anyways, come to this clean, dark, sinful, bootleggin’ feelin’, underground wine/liquor oasis and buy yourself a treat. Or 2. Or 5. As much as you can carry.
The staff is always ready to help and I have enjoyed chatting with them all as wine is my thing. As soon as you walk in, staff will be more than eager to serve you! You may not find the exact bottle of wine or beer that you are looking for but I assure you, you will leave happy!

OH YEAH! This place exists!
I know it has been there for a while, I have walked past the sign hundreds of times, but never went there until I needed a nice bottle of scotch, someone said ‘Go to The Cellar.’ I thought to myself ‘Self, you should go The Cellar’. I know really inventive thought.
This place is just simply cool to walk into. I feel cooler for even having walked into The Cellar. It kind of feels like it could be illegal, it’s not at all, but it’s underground and swanky. And the staff is very informative, they are useful and willing to help out.
The Cellar has tons of selection! The wine goes on for ages and ages, what don’t they have. The Scotch selection was excellent, brands and types that most, whatever liquor stores, don’t ever have on hand. And the beer, I wasn’t there for beer but I had to look, they have some great rare beers from all over the place, some of my favourites from Quebec and lots of imports from Europe.
Go there, you will find something and love it!

So many wines, not enough time!
Love stopping by here to check out the wines and feel like I’m in an old cellar of a winery. I’m not overly knowledgeable about wine (yet), but there are always friendly staff around ready to answer any questions you have. They’re not overbearing either, allowing you to browse and daydream about the expensive wines you want to try. They also have quite the selection from around the world, ice wines, and champagne for your fancy self. Check it out if you’re looking for a present for that special someone or just a treat for yourself after a long week at work.

I love visiting the Cellar to grab wine because it is located in: bum bum bum… A cellar! To be clear, the cellar is that of the old Alberta Hotel, and this brings a very historic and slightly European atmosphere to the shop. It makes your visit into an experience. The other major benefit is that they play up the wine cellar connection — indeed the storage conditions are very good for the serious bottles of wine that they keep here.
I am not an Oil Baron or associate, so I lack the resources to know about the best of the best that they keep here. But they have some pretty fine wines in my ten to fifteen dollar range, and are without snobbery in helping a girl find a good (cheap) wine. I love a good wine, although I am pretty far from being an expert so it is really nice to be able to refer to the ratings they have for the wines. Any questions you might have are answered by the helpful staff, and they know their stuff!
So whether you are a wine newbie or a seasoned connoisseur, the Cellar is a wonderful wine gem conveniently located in downtown Calgary. When I have time I always try to make the trip pre-dinner party.
