The Better Butcher

Very good selection, fair prices, and the chalkboard shows the good humour of the staff. I love being able to pick up fresh meats for dinner on my way home from work.
They also have great house made sausages in the freezer — my favourites are the lemon pepper pork sausage and sundried tomato turkey sausage.

Nice place. Great selection of sausages. Try the honey garlic pepperettes yum.

Bought some beef sausages for my family and was very disappointed with the quality. It’s nothing more than an emulsified beef hot dog full of fillers. Won’t be shopping there again, no matter how close I live. I’ll drive the extra distance for good quality sausage at Alpine Sausage in Glenmorgan

The ideal neighbourhood butcher. Had exactly what I needed for a recipe right out of the gate. I had to restrain myself from purchasing one of everything.
Don’t let the small stature and strip mall location dissuade you from their awesome meat power.

I think this is a great local butcher. The quality and selection of meats far surpasses what you would find at a local grocery store. So far, we have tried to ground meat (beef and turkey), chicken legs, sausage, and bacon. Everything has been full of flavor and super easy to cook. The ground beef we made into this delicious meat sauce that barely needed any spices.
The butcher is in a decent sized shop and has all of your major cuts of meat. There is limited seafood as the bread and butter seems to be the pork/​beef. There is a good selection of chicken and turkey products as well as some cornish game hens and some duck. The sausages are made in-​house with a good variety — italian to maple/​blueberry to breakfast to turkey. There is also a good selection of bacon, prosciutto, and other cured meats. Any other speciality meats or cuts should be order 48 hours in advance.
The only reason that I hesitate to give this place five stars is because the meat is purchased from larger Alberta distributors. It’s hard to verify if the meat is free range/​hormone free/​etc because they purchase from multiple distributors. When I asked one of the employees where the meat was from, I also got a very curt answer. There didn’t seem to be a willingness to go into detail about each specific cut and where it was from.
So the moral of my story is that if you are looking for good quality, delicious meat at a reasonable price then the Better Butcher is a far superior option to Safeway, Co-​op, etc. If you want to know where all of your meat is coming from and how it lived/​died then maybe you should try somewhere else. Or perhaps, you should go in the middle of the day, when they’re not super busy and you have the ability to have a more extended conversation regarding the origin of the meat.

To me a good butcher is a place where you walk in, ask for a cut of meat, and he goes into the cold storage brings out a chunk and cuts off a piece of the cut you want. This place doesn’t seem to work this way.
I wanted beef short ribs cut flanken style. Well he had cut up all the ribs English style and packaged them and put them in a cooler for self serve. I would need to give him 2 days notice to get the cut I wanted. To me that is chain store mentality, not a butcher. The meat seems to be all cut and out. That’s a supermarket.
Now people seem to like it because all the meat is antibiotic free. But he no longer carries grass finished beef, he said. I have never tried the meat so I cannot comment on it. He says it is aged 30 days on site but he can’t cut me my ribs without 2 days notice. Why? He doesn’t want to give me 29 day aged meat?
I’ve been there 3 times and each time failed to get the meat I wanted. No this is not a Better Butcher, it is a supermarket and I’m sorry we don’t have the cut of meat you want today.

My day to day go to butcher. Always a great selection of meat though definitely much to Alberta tastes (beef that Albertan’s take home and cook badly). However if I ask or order in advance they have never failed to find what I need (though I have not asked for goat yet) from meat for the smoker to beautiful cuts for a dinner party. Great guys and very friendly. Always consistent high quality. The best.

Loved the Better Butcher!!! Seriously, he will cut any piece of meat for you to order (not every where can get you 9lbs of pork butt) and their sausages are to die for. The staff is friendly and efficient!

Great service, price and product! I won’t shop anywhere else for free-​range hormone/​antibiotic free meat and eggs!

my favorite butcher in Calgary, I’ve been to so many butchers around the city and this place just gets it right every time. I get frustrated fast with inconsistent meat at butcher shops, but these guys ALWAYS have beautiful meat at great prices. SUPER friendly staff makes it even better! always helpfull amiling when I ask for a bunch of 2″ rib steaks cut with no notice! :0)

I loooove this place. Not only because they use hormone free meats, but it is way cheaper than other butcher/​grocery stores with organic meat Ive been to. Its a tiny store, but they have all the basics (chicken, beef and pork) along with some fish, and game meats, perogie. They have amazing sausages… which come in smaller prepacked quantities, which I like because I typically cook for one.
They even have beef bacon. Its a little chewier and saltier than the average stuff, but for those who dont want to eat pork its delicious.
This is definately my new go to for meat.

The bacon alone is worthy of giving this place 5 stars. However, the people behind the counter are super nice and friendly too. I will def pass all the super markets and drive the extra distance to buy my meat there.

Up to now this is the only Butcher I go to when I need something special, they have a good selection of fresh and frozen meat related foods and friendly helpful staff.
Also if you ask they will try and get any cut of meat you want, I’ve had Pigs Trotters, Pigs Ears and Pigs Cheeks from these for next to nothing extra in price, although you have to order and wait a few days they still will try and get what you want.
I know it sounds a bit funny but I highly recommend trying Pigs Cheeks braised for 4 hrs they are really tasty,

We are very lucky to have this butcher shop in our area. Everything is top notch. Not only is the meat and chicken great but their bacon is delicious so don’t forget to try that. I don’t even bother buying meat at the grocery store anymore because this meat is so good.
I agree with the other reviewer that mentioned the stomach issue. I always feel fine with the Better Butcher’s meat and I hadn’t really thought about that until I read the review mentioning it.
