Ambiance bar bistro sympa.

This restaurant with an average of 3.5 stars caught my attention but… no second time. It is quieter than the other restaurants very close to the touristy area(ie Rue des bouchers) but besides that, no extra pros. I was first greeted by the bartender and immediately sat at a table. About 10−15mins after, the server came to take the order/answer questions. I didn’t like a lot the amount of time it took him(the restaurant was not full) but counting the fact that he made an effort to speak English made me forget about the waiting. The food arrived fairly quickly and it looked very very appetizing; through the eyes it watered my mouth. When it came to the taste though, I’ve had better. I tried the famous Moules-frites(smaller portion) and the dish with the kriek rabbit leg with north cherries and potato croquettes. To me none were that good. Different to what I am used to yes, but nothing I would repeat. Days later I ate at a super lay-back place Mer du Nord uffff so good.

So, my sister says, «Everyone says I have to get the mussels if I’m in Brussels». So I’m like, «Ok so lemme call Jean-Claude Van Damme real quick…*commence frantic search on cell phone for JCVD’s home number* Then I remembered I had to take his number out of my phone after… well…I don’t want to talk about it. Anyway, after recognizing my sister meant the bivalve mollusk and not human tissue we headed over to Skievelat. It was just up the street from where we were staying. I had already ate a Chipotle burrito I brought over from England, so I was looking for dessert. The place was pretty full on a Friday night which was great for the ambiance. Both floors seemed pretty busy. The waiters looked stressed out though as it seemed to be only 2 – 3 of them for the whole two floors. We ordered our adult beverages and waited since the waiter forgot to give us menus. Now, my sister ordered a large beer and it was much bigger than she thought so I had to help her finish it later on, but be aware that large is actually huge. It wasn’t quite Oktoberfest stein huge, but it was pretty big. I ordered crème brulee and my sister got the pot of mussels which came with frites(fries). So the waiter comes out like 10 – 15 mins later(yes.they’re quick) with this medium pot of mussels but honestly two people can probably share a pot. I actually think you’re supposed to share them but since I’m vegetarian I told my sister that was all on her. And… she still had that big glass of beer to slam. Anyway, the crème brulee was ok. Not the best I’ve had and really nothing overly special. My sister fully gorged herself on the mussels pot and felt bad for leaving a few in the pot. I told her that to just let go and let god because I could see that over-stuffed miserable wince in her face and she didn’t seem to like the painful reminder that her big beer was only half gone. So… she tapped out but got her money’s worth. It’s a great restaurant and the people that sat nearby were sociable. It wasn’t too touristy either so it seemed like actual locals eat there.

This was the first stop on a 2 week trip to Europe. Brussels began the tour! Skievelat provided an excellent friendly atmosphere, with a nice bar and dining area selection. From booths, heightened tables where 1 on 1 lunches felt relaxed along with nice leg/footrests. Included in the dining was a 2nd floor that was packed with people. The waitress was very friendly and accomidating, with fast service. I ordered the meatballs with brown sauce which came with a side of fries. Of course as all of Belgium does fries with mayonnaise, I indulged like a king avec le mayo. Using the gueuze(brown) sauce with the fries was fantastic as well. Three meatballs accompanied the plate and were soft + cooked to perfection. Highly recommended!

Decent food and beers. It was close to my hotel so we decided to come in for some Belgian cuisine and beers. Tons of beers, and a pretty extensive menu. The best part of my dining experience for dinner? Our server. He didn’t speak English too well but he was very friendly and tried to explain as much as he could while trying to communicate with us. As an American tourist, it was nice to be able to sit down, enjoy the restaurant and good service without being labeled as tourists! :) Beer is cheaper than the spring bottled water they serve here. So if you can hold off on the water, order the Belgian beers. They have steaks, Belgian mussels and fries. It was nice to dine in at 900pm with the sun still shining out! Sit outside if possible…

A éviter

The food is pretty good in this place, one of the main reasons I frequent this restaurant is because of the proximity to my apartment. If your looking for great customer service, this isn’t the place. It’s sad because the food is good but the customer service isn’t there, for that reason it gets 3 stars from me.

On s’arrête donc ici.

The wait staff is unbelievably rude two consecutive nights in a row. Night#1: three groups of customers are clearly drinking, but when I enter, «we are closed.» Night#2: i show up an hour prior to my last adventure, and head up to the restroom. I am immediately harassed about where I am going as ‘that floor is closed’. Disregarding the strange comment, I return downstairs and wait 20minutes and make eye contact with a number of staff– no service despite their waiting of a number of tables and even clustering around an old homeless looking delivery man for some laughs. Ultimately I do get served after pointing at the menu and requesting a drink. I promptly have Euros and my credit card on the table for 30min while I wait for a bill, despite making eye contact with everyone again. I watch continued staff cameradarie and one which smoked a cigarrette on a break and tried to get lung cancer for 15minutes or so, and returned to dry dishes. Finally I am provided the bill which requires my credit card use when I am informed it is a 25Euro minimum charge(well above my single drink charge). I offer to buy another drink, wine, and even pay other customer bills– just to make my money go somewhere useful. I am denied as they are ‘closing’. Some conversation ensures in French between a concerned looking couple and the staff. I am offered an IOU of sorts, going to an ATM, or the 25Euro charge– i pay the latter to be rid of this place(although most of my money was subtly returned by a sympathetic staffer). This place is ridiculous, customer service is not important here, and signifies a larger potential problem with Belgium culture(experienced this rudeness a few other places by colleagues of mine this week) — no wonder the Euro is crashing.

Have been here twice for lunch and unfortunately was never really impressed. The food is definitely okay, but nothing out of the ordinary. I’ve had the cheeseburger(which comes with too greasy and flubbery bacon) and the steak tartare. Service was quite fast, even with larger groups. Overall experience was meh.

This was the best mussels I ate since long! This is a nice Brasserie style restaurant with industrial decoration(wood, metal). The waiters are nice but the service is a bit slow(as the food is good, it’s ok). The menu is a list of belgian specialities from shrimps cakes to stoemp(mash with mixed vegetables) to carbonade and mussels! I love it and will be definitively back! For one starter(shrimps cake), 2 mussels with 2 beers and 2 waters, we paid 63 € and it was the right price for good food.

Came on a Thursday night at around 9:40 pm. There were a number of tables empty. Asked for a table and was told to wait. Asked another person no response. Then another. They said wait. After staring down a waitress for 15 minutes they seat us. This is when there are a lot of tables free. I had already eaten so I ordered a drink and my wife a burger and drink. A friend was joining in 5 minutes. The waitress was horrified that we were only having one burger(ignoring we ordered 3 drinks). She said we should move to a table for two since only one person is eating and others are drinking and threw a fuss. The attitude from every staff we encountered was horrible! Don’t go there, sablon has better places and Somalia has better staff on the pirate boats. _________________________

I was here with my boyfriend on a short trip. We found this pub on Unilocal and thought it was easy to find. The entrance to the restaurant wasn’t on a busy street and was a bit hidden, so we had to go around a block before we found it. We got there around 4pm for early snack/dinner, so the place was not busy at all. My favorite out of the two dishes we ordered was the stuffed tomato with shrimp was very good. It looks like the tomato was poached quickly and chilled, while the cooked tiny shrimps where served cold with a bed of lettuce. It’s slightly peppered and salted so it feels refreshing and light. The shrimp croquette was interesting. It was a little too creamy for my taste, but it was more liquid-like than usual croquettes and the cream melts in your mouth. Unfortunately mussels weren’t in season, so I’d love to come back in winter.

My boyfriend and I are here on vacation, and have had to do some hard looking to find food we wanted to pay for(and by pay I mean reasonably hand over our money without feeling ripped off). I found this place on Unilocal, and we got lost on the way, but it was very worth it. The interior is awesomely welcoming as was the staff working on this busy friday night. Lots of bro dudes in pacts, but our experience helped us overcome their incessant group chanting and purposefully purchased worn in denim. I had the chicken in ginger and curry. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I took the first bite and exclaimed to my boyfriend, «holy shit». The sauce was unbelievable. We both kept eating it(he dipped his fajitas in it) and every time it got to our mouth we made obnoxious noises; almost as if we had no control over our reaction. I know this is a bit much, but I was happy and satiated. The bartender made us complimentary shots as we ended our meal and the service was great. If I lived around here, I’d definitely be there regularly. Eating out in a foreign city around 11pm is a gamble, but it was worth the risk. Go for it.

Yeah. We found this on Unilocal and decided to have lunch here on our first day. The reviews looked great, so we thought we found a winner. Unfortunately, we didn’t. Six of us ordered the mussels and chips. Two were with cream, two with garlic and cream, one with peppers and one moules marinerie. The other half and I also shared a starter of Belgian tapas which consisted of a piece of braised beef, two types of meatballs, one type of sausage, some apple stuff and some mash. It looked great. It was just okay. Things were a bit cold, but nothing was super fantastic(the best was the braised beef). The mussels were pretty crap to be honest. No flavor at all. I’ve had better mussels in London. It was really disappointing. Most of us weren’t overly impressed with the quality of food here. Which was really disappointing seeing how highly it was reviewed. Maybe it was a bad day. But I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone if you’re looking for good mussels in Brussels.

We found this place on Unilocal and were happy that we did. We are all about good food and great atmosphere, which is exactly what this place serves up. We had a booth by the window on the ground floor which we loved. We over ordered, but were happy to try it all. I say we over ordered because we got the moules-frites(with onions) for the four of us to share. It was delicious!!! and HUGE. I would have been happy to stop there. We didn’t though and we all enjoyed our main dishes which I didn’t come close to finishing. The service was excellent – and the spot was happening. The menu is extensive and in French but our server spoke a bit of English though not much – so we relied on 2 of our group who could speak elementary French. The beer and wine selection were good as well – even though I am told no one drinks wine in Belgium, I managed to do just fine. The other 8 reviews on Unilocal are in french which to me is a good sign that this is a great local restaurant. Would definitely recommend for the moules alone.

I love the street that Skievelat is on… it’s so European & awesome! When I first arrived, it was an extremely chilly night in Brussels and my friends brought us to this lovely restaurant. It was crowded and our table wasn’t ready yet so we had a few beers at the little bar they had. We probably waited about 30 minutes before our table was ready and I was in the mood for some mussels. The boys recommended I get the garlic ones and I’m so happy they did because they were seriously so good! The best mussels I’ve ever had! So full of intense garlic flavor like you wouldn’t believe so I highly recommend it. I must say that the service was pretty on point and the atmosphere is cool. It’s a nice place to hang out with friends, have a brewski, and enjoy a nice meal. And if you don’t already know, GETTHEGARLICMOULES-FRITES!
