SUMMARY: Amazing waffle, good main course, and bad fries. My SO and I specifically sought this place out for their waffles, but ended up getting lunch as well. We ordered the croque madame + daily special(a creamy baked seafood casserole + fries cut like sandwich pickles + leek soup + salad) + waffle with strawberries and fresh cream. I would definitely go back for the waffles, but would probably try other restaurants for food. —-MORE DETAIL — - WAFFLE: We tried 4 – 5 waffles around Bruges, and this was my favorite by leaps and bounds. My rating would be 5STARS if it was just for the waffles. Super light and crispy — I’ve never had anything quite like it before! OTHERFOOD: Other food was ok. Croque madame was good, but nothing special. Salad dressing tasted a little too much like just diluted mayo for me. The chips were AWFUL for Belgian fries — they tasted more like US diner/McD fries — a little soft instead of crispy and hot. The leek soup was delicious — very creamy and I may try to make it at home! The seafood casserole portion was tiny, but I couldn’t eat more than half because it was so rich. There were 2 delicious scallops in it and some tiny shrimp — SO enjoyed it though. INTERIOR: NICE: set up like a nice café, but nothing particularly special. SO did point out that there’s a cute seating area in the back, but I didn’t get a chance to check it out. There was plenty of seating on a Tuesday late morning. SERVICE: GOOD(for Bruges): Nothing exceptional, but nothing bad on US standards, but better than most of the other service we got in Bruges. Waitress was attentive and came around at appropriate times and answered our questions without a scowl. LOCATION: POOR(as of 8 Sep 2015 when we went, but will be better once construction is over): Construction is going on right outside, so the usually quaint window seating looks out onto a street that’s been dug up and lots of construction going on. Other than this, however, the location was great — on a main street close to everything — but that’s pretty true for all of downtown Bruges.

Great host, beautiful setting, fresh and delicious food. We had omelets and waffles, both were incredible. Delicious hot chocolate! Nice presentation and attention to detail, we will definitely come back.

The waffle was so light that I needed the weight of the strawberries to keep it on the plate. Our server described it as the best waffle in the world — a claim I feel no need to dispute. The continental breakfast was lovely as well. A basket of delicious bread with ham, cheese, preserves and Nutella. They also offer pancakes and other delights, but unfortunately one can only eat so much per visit. My Illy coffee came with a couple of pieces of chocolate and a small packet of Speculoos(the traditional Belgian cookie). The restaurant was quiet on a Monday morning with only a few locals enjoying their own breakfasts. The service was prompt and friendly. We managed to navigate our way through the Flemish and French menu. Café au Lait is a very pleasant and delicious way to get some breakfast. I would gladly go back, and hope to have the opportunity to try their lunch dishes as well.
