Set in the corner of a new apartment complex on Blythe St, Gooseberries Café is spacious and light, with a welcoming courtyard area and a comfy outdoor setting as you enter. I arrived with my pal Scotty around 11am; sadly 30 minutes too early for the lunch menu. We had to opt for brunch food which consisted of the usual egg and bacon dishes, pancakes, and several focaccia-type filled rolls. Scotty played it safe and ordered a juicy bacon, avocado and tomato roll; a hearty serving that satisfied her love of bacon. As I was hankering more for lunch food I chose the Bali breakfast of nasi goreng, served with chicken satay and a trio of sambals. I have made a few lacklustre choices lately and sadly, this choice followed suit. The nasi goreng was the strangest and blandest I’ve ever eaten. Missing the usual spicing, the rice was made with lashings of lemon grass and what may have been shallots. This dry dish was crying out for flavour, and the sambal dishes of kecap manis, red chilli strips minus chilli seeds, and a mild tomato-based sauce, were similarly disappointing. I’d asked for my egg to be cooked firm, but it had been fried within an inch of its life and didn’t help lift the dish out of its state of mediocrity. The chicken satays had also missed a good spice opportunity, and although they were more palatable than the rice, they also lacked punch. Gooseberries redeemed itself somewhat with its excellent coffee, made with Di Bella beans. Their long macs really are long, and unlike most cafes that serve them in thimbles, their version is served in a generous glass — more of a latte size. Love it — other cafes should take note. I’ve been here before for an almond croissant and a coffee, and enjoyed that much more than my breakfast today. I noticed the lunches being served on my other visit and they looked impressive, so perhaps I just made a poor choice today. There’s a range of cakes, pastries and slices on offer, as well as fresh juices. The waitresses are friendly, and the venue is a winner. It’s nice to sit in a café where you don’t bump elbows with the people at the next table. Overall, Gooseberries is a pleasant experience, and a welcome addition to the Yokine area. Despite my poor food experience, I’m still a fan and love the venue and the coffee. Definitely promising!

Finally have a local café within a hop, skip and a jump. Reasonable priced food with a welcoming décor and friendly staff. I had ordered the«Gooseberry» eggs Benedict and was very impressed with the consistency of the poached eggs. Done to perfection! Also a nice touch was the refresher towels at the end of the meal. Will definitely be walking down there again to walk off another meal on the way back

Recommended this place by the friend I was staying with, the lure of croissants had me wandering down Blythe Street to enjoy a brunch meal. Tucked away at the corner of a set of shops behind Balinese inspired screens was a surprisingly spacious café area with both indoor and outdoor seating. Ordering is largely from the menu(although cabinet food is limited, I’m told the almond croissant is divine) and I selected the bacon and cheese croissant and one of their coconut water blends. The croissant was gooey cheesey perfection; the drink slightly lacking in sweetness but beautifully presented none the less. Service was prompt and friendly and the meal nicely completely with the cute addition of an expandable moist towelette. Hit the brunch craving perfectly and there’s nothing else quite like it in Yokine — would visit again.

Pretty cool vibe at this place, it’s very laid back with its Balinese inspired menu and chilled seating arrangement. First time here and the prices are a bit over the top, in saying that the service was impeccable and the food we ordered was pretty amazeballs. I was a bit annoyed at the $ 6.00 cost of the serve of bacon that couldn’t be swapped for another item but it was pretty damned tasty and not just a stingy two pieces it was quite a few bits of scrumptious streaky bacon! NOW the Coffee! The flat white me and my partner got was so nice the I got 3 and she also got 2 and they were consistently a solid 9⁄10. And the real tell-all is the long black my coffee snob sister from Melbourne got. She is not easily impressed and let’s face it you can’t fix a crap long black. She thoroughly enjoyed her coffee too. So the synopsis? I’ll definitely be back here, yes it’s pricey but I think worth it when you get great food, great service and fabulous coffee! Check this joint out!

I heard about this place from a friend & it seems they’ve been open a week. I checked it out TWICE on Sunday, once to grab a coffee on the go & then I took hubby back in the afternoon. Gooseberries is tucked away on Blythe Ave but not hard to find, you feel like your a million miles away when you walk through the gate. I like the open, airy & light feel of the place. They do have a $ 10 minimum on eftpos so my morning coffee turned into a coffee & almond croissant, I thought it was a bit steep at $ 12.50 but I needed the coffee! It was the first almond croissant I’ve had that I actually enjoyed — normally they taste like marzipan. The coffee was great too however at $ 5.00 for a regular, it’s more expensive than most places in West Perth & the CBD. I hope they bring the price down. Hubby & I walked down later in the afternoon, we arrived very close to 3pm(when the kitchen closes). We grabbed menus and sat outside to pick our meal quickly. There was no problem with us ordering close to 3pm which was nice. We ordered an iced coffee, pepsi max and lamb pizza to share($ 35 total). The pizza was delicious & the sauce to go with it as well. There were some garlic skins we needed to pull off & I’m not sure why the salad was on it as there wasn’t much flavour to it, so we just left it to the side. Would definitely order it again though, it was enough to fill us both up. It’s great to have something walking distance from our place & something a little classy too. I think the prices will restrict it from being a «regular haunt» for us which is a shame, it’s such a nice spot & I could spend many many hours out in the courtyard. I wonder if they’ll eventually get an alcohol license as I can imagine weekend sundowners here. TL;DR — Go & check it out. You’ll find something to like. I’ll go back, just not as often as I’d like to :)
