We are Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP), a world-leading theatre company. We are invested in exploring young people’s interests, experiences and stories.
We take young people aged 4 to 26 from their first experience in theatre to their first professional production. Many young people engage with us through our drama workshops or through their own schools through our education programs. We also provide young people with pathways in all aspects of theatre making including playwriting, acting, and production management. We achieve this through partnerships, professionalism and dedication to build the next generation of theatre makers and audiences.
Over 50 years, ATYP has been responsible for establishing the careers of many Australian who have become household names, including our ambassadors, Baz Luhrmann, Rose Byrne and Rebel Wilson.
History
Established in 1963.
In the 1950’s an amateur children’s theatre was creating a bit of magic in Mosman. It was lead by playwright, Eleanor Whitcombe. Unable to find a successor, she turned to the theatre fraternity to look for help. Australia Theatre for Young People (ATYP) was established by a group of professional actors and directors. It’s aim was to provide theatre of a high standard, not only to children, but to young people of all ages.
After a permanent home was found for ATYP with the Old Tote at the Parade Theatre in 1969, youth workshops began and members worked with directors, writers and actors to develop their personal skills and an awareness of the performing arts.
The ethos of ATYP was always to provide excellence, entertainment and education.
Its genesis was from the professional arts; its funding from hard graft. It’s future is with the young themselves.
