The UTSDAB Café was closed for a while over summer, for renovations. They seem to be calling themselves the Universal Café now, or so says their board. It reopened in February 2012, with slightly nicer looking countertops, and a few other improvements to furnishings and student access. Basically, this is a quick-serve lunch spot for students and staff at UTS, but it is open to the public too. The vibe is friendly, fast-paced and studenty. There are plenty of space to sit, though it really fills up at lunchtime. Here’s the rundown: Great for lasagna, moussaka, cannelloni and other rich dishes like that. You can get these served with a big side salad for $ 10.50. The couscous and rice dishes are oily, but provided in generous servings, and usually have loads of vegetables in them. You can also get cups of yogurt, fruit salad, and dangerous looking sweet things, like caramel slice and Portuguese tarts. They have sandwiches — which I don’t really rate — as well as wraps, not-very-good croissants and sausage rolls, I’m not a fan of any of these: they’re all a bit bland and dry. The muffins, on the other hand, are pretty good. Crispy muffin tops and plenty of fruit. Big downside: The coffee is NOT to be trusted. I only order hot-chocolate here, after making that mistake a few times too many.
