If you close at 5, do not accept customers at 4:40 and rudely tell them to leave and ‘upsy daisy’ at 4:50. I am a local and will happily spend my time and money elsewhere. Two stars because a different staff member made us decent coffees. Although not enough to get me to return to or recommend a place who have staff who don’t respect their customers.

Mooi at Mitcham Shopping Centre do a pretty good coffee. I’d give them an 8 out of 10. I haven’t eaten there but have noticed they have a good selection of wraps and deserts on display. They also do gelati and fresh fruits ready cut to make juices. The number one advantage of this café is they are located in the absolute best spot for people watching. Being in the centre of the shopping centre, nearly all foot traffic has to pass them by at one stage or another. Nab yourself a table and if you love people watching while you get your caffeine fix, you’ll be in heaven. One word of warning though — beware the takeaway coffee. Their lids are a very tight fit for their takeaway cups and if they’re not placed on properly(this is up to you to do with the lids sitting in a stand along with the sugar) you run the risk of the dreaded spillage. I had 2 or 3 tries before I got my lid on securely and at one stage nearly ended up wearing my latte.

I’ve always had a bias — one that may very well be unjustified — against these no-walls, open sort of cafés. There are plenty of seats, and I know that means you’re meant to stop, sit, dine and enjoy, but something about these places reek of takeaway coffee. The coffee at Mooi isn’t bad. One might even say it’s quite good. And if you’re the observing type, there’s few better vantage points than in one of the seats here at Mooi Esperesso. But when there’s a perfectly good café right across the way from Mostly Books, my favourite independent bookstore, I think I’ll pass Mooi up in the future. Drinking a coffee is all about the atmosphere, and the hustle and bustle isn’t my ideal scene for some caffeine ingestion.

Mooi’s has good coffee, gelati and the usual coffee shop lunch offerings including ready made wraps, rolls and sweet treats. This place is in a great location in an open area of the Mitcham Shopping Centre with a two-storey glass ceiling allowing patrons to watch the elements if they are so inclined. It’s always busy here which is a good sign. You can wait up to 10 minutes for a coffee during peak times, so if I’m getting one to go, I duck down to the newsagent to make best use of the time. Otherwise, there are papers and the odd magazine you can flick through while you wait. The glass cabinet has plenty of pre-prepared food on offer. The wraps are delicious and very popular. Fillings include tandoori chicken and falafel and they sell for around $ 9.50 for $ 5 for a half — great for a mid arvo snack. The coffee is good and what I generally come here for on a Saturday morning. There are three sizes to go, mini, midi and maxi and are on average in pricing. They also offer a ‘buy 10 coffees, get one free’ loyalty card. Friendly service and plenty of tables make this an easy choice for a casual midday bite if you’re in the area.
