A great facelift for a publicbar. I love how it is set just below street level and the mural on the back wall. On a quiet day its a great place to stop, have a beer and choose from a wide selection of Cheese toasties for $ 5!

When walking past the slightly dishevelled façade of the historic George Hotel on Fitzroy Street, it’s easy to miss the underground bar that can only be seen when focusing at your feet. The Melbourne Wine Room, an elegant host of fine food and wine — is also situated within the venue but it’s the bar that comes alive at night(with 20 something year old revellers) that I have become a regular attendee of. The George, a well renowned place that has seen generations continue to come back, is a pokey but atmospheric venue that is particularly popular as a ‘drop-in’ point for those wanting to dance to some classic RnB tunes before hitting the town hard. Local hip hop artists and DJ’s frequently entertain the crowd, with special international guests(most recently, the Wu Tang Clan) even known to use the venue as the perfect ‘after-party’ spot. After making your way through the narrow section in front of the bar, you come to the dance floor which is spacious enough to get rowdy but also intimately right next to the performer’s area. Lush booths surround the dance floor allowing your entourage to claim their own spot.
