The river near Canning highway is awesome, plenty of activities in the surrounding areas, great restaurants, a great little IGA which although expensive has some great gourmet items. Walking around the river is a dream, especially when the weather is warm. Bring your kids, find a play ground, there are many around and sit back and enjoy the day. Walk up to the boat ramp playground area and watch the water skiers, great clean toilet facilities and showers so you really can spend the day. Watch out for the cyclists though that are so self obsorbed they dont keep an eye out.

If you can ignore the ridiculous amounts of money being spent around you in a tasteless fashion, the Applecross foreshore is genuinely beautiful, especially at night. Melville Water provides a dramatic foreground for the Perth skyline, which is far away enough to appear architecturally interesting. There’s a footpath winding along the river which runs right up from the depths of Mt Pleasant to Heathcote and takes in this view, along with a womble underneath the Canning Bridge and a pile of yachts. It’s a nice romantic walk to take of an evening or a good place to go for a jog. There’s plenty of places along here that would be perfect for a picnic, not least of which is Heathcote, but the foreshore is pretty cool too. Worth stopping by for a walk.

When apartment hunting, I have a few non-negotiables. One of them is that wherever I live, it has to be near to the water. I was lucky enough to live right on the Canning River in Salter Point a few months ago, a tributary of the Swan River. Having lived next to both, I’m not entirely sure which one I prefer! Both are incredibly pretty and have roused a deep, contented sigh from me. Nevertheless, the Canning River has the kind of sparkle and sapphire glow that makes you stop cursing your co-passengers on cramped public transport and be grateful you live somewhere as pretty as Perth. In the mornings, the river has this eerie stillness, and the water turns almost grey. Seriously spooky. Occasionally it can appear a bit more green than usual, thanks to the naturally occurring algal blooms. On a sunny day, the river is best enjoyed from the views of a few parks that are scattered throughout Applecross, South Perth and Como(Jeff Jospeh’s Reserve and Olive’s Reserve spring to mind!). Or, if you’re like me, go for a job or bike ride along the paths on the Kwinana Freeway side.
