Real value for money on top of a nice environment and friendly service. Don’t go there unless you are hungry!

This opened at the same time we moved to Melbourne and we have been regulars ever since. Traditional Hungarian food served in a quirky little restaurant provided by owners who are clearly passionate about their food. The paprika sauce is fantastic and be sure to visit the toilet Definitely a place for when you are hungry!

Looking at some of the other reviews and pictures it looks like they have cut down on the size of the chicken schnitzel. I was expecting a plate size and what arrived was half of that. The chips that came with the meal could have done with some extra cooking to make them a bit softer and maybe a bit crunchier. The service was very slow, we waited over 45 minutes to get 4 meals, and the meals didn’t even come out at the same time. The restaurant wasn’t that busy to justify waiting so long for our food.

We stumbled upon the Hungarian when looking for something different, and we found it. A limited selection of food, but great quality. Excellent friendly service. We ate on a Monday evening when they discount main meals — based on your age. We got 45 per cent off, but the guy on the next table took his mother, and got a 89 per cent discount! If you’re 100, you’ll eat free! I think it was 6−7pm on Monday only. Regardless, even if you don’t get the discount, go for a great home cooked style meal in a quaint atmosphere.

The meals are Eastern European size but lack true Eastern European taste. The chicken schnitzel was exceptionally large, but apart from some dill in the accompanying mashed potato, it could have been something Aunty Lyn dished up for Tuesday night dinner. The crepes did look good though. The interior of this restaurant is amusing. Plastic chairs and checked table cloth. You would be forgiven for thinking this was an Italian restaurant, except for the picture of the Eiffel tower on the wall?!? Definitely not an unpleasant experience, but not what I had expected. The Hungarian clearly doesn’t disappoint everyone though, on this Friday night it was fully booked.
